Oh, THAT one!
This pilot fish works for a company that handles real estate appraisals, and fish is responsible for a key application: the one that lets customers order appraisals online.
That's why he's the one who has to handle a call from a would-be customer.
"An irate woman calls, telling me she's trying to request an appraisal for her property," fish says. "But when she chooses New York from the drop down, her county isn't displaying.
"I have her read me her home address and then I reread it to her in order to confirm it."
Then he looks for her county. It's not on the list.
Fish knows the list of counties for each state is stored in a database. When a customer chooses a state, the list of all the counties in that state appears. It's hard to imagine what could go wrong.
"I'm wondering if perhaps a new county has been created -- this happens once in a while -- and our database is slightly behind the times," says fish. "I place her on hold several times, and speak to several people in our processing department and scour the Internet for county lists.
"Finally, after exhausting all resources, I pick the phone up and tell her that the county must not exist."
But it must exist, she points out. One of her houses is there.
Groans fish, "After an hour and a half, it turns out that she owns two homes and forgot what state she was in.
"When she picked Pennsylvania, the county magically appeared."
