| i was just looking at some new features ( to me anyway) on the windows media player 10 and there is Rip Burn and Sync options........does anyone know what these mean and what are these functions used for when would you used them. i am assuming burn is copy like it on nero

Ok the first 2 I know, Ripping is when you "rip" a CD into mp3's or such. Burning is burning music to a CD. And I am guessing sync, is to sync your music up to a portable device or something like that.
Either way I wouldn't use it for any 3 of them. Theres much better ways of doing them with other software thats free.

Yeah ripping takes the music of the CD and leaves you with a audio file of various formats. Personally for compatibility I would choose MP3, but I think as standard you can only rip to WMA with Windows Media Player.
I rip all my music as soon as I get it. Makes it easier to have it all in one place and I don't have to swap CD's all the time. Just type in the song/artist and it plays.

With windows media player, it rips songs to wma files as standard (not a good idea) but you can change that in the options part so it rips to mp3 automatically.
Another good idea is to go to your music library, probably my documents/my music and convert them all to mp3. You can get a mp3 converter online. Many are free.
I say this because wma files are fiddly and sometimes mess up the burning process.

I would hope that none of them are spyware. Freeware is normally free of anything like that.
Go with AudioGrabber that looks pretty good to me.
If you want a nice audio player with a built in library to keep track of your music, I can also recommend Winamp

my nero6 stopped working after sp2...i stupidly updated some files and now it definitly refuses to work so i deleted in desperation as it became an irritating itch. but now i need a decent cd burner. i still do have roxio which came with my pc..but roxio is crap........win media player and real player you have to copy to the library than burn
any suggestions or are the freeware you mentioned will it allow me to copy disc as i did with nero

No, don't think any of that software I listed will copy a CD. All they do is rip the music to a file. You want something similar to Nero. But Nero is a really good package, have you tried re-installing it?
I think that would be your best bet, to get nero working again.

Only the CD recording module is shareware and time limited the... all the rest is free...
