Everytime i run a search on google, i get annoying popups often relating to what ever I have run the search on and also, if say i went to a car website, I would get a pop up relating to cars. I know it probably seem's like a basic question but I have only really been into computers for the past year and I have anti virus protection and i've got spyware doctor installed but these arn't really eliminating the problem. Another thing I have noticed is that when I try new popup blockers they usually work for the first day and then the problem comes back by the next! I was thinking that I should perhaps reboot my system and completely start from scratch but then that would take me for ever!
I was just basically wondering if anyone else has the same problem and whether or not there is anything that I can do to get rid of the popup's for good.

Ive had the msn toolbar installed for a while and it does the job...

1. download and run spybot seek and destroy

2. also download and run Adaware pro and setup adwatch to run at startup
http://jakal.vze.com/ click - appz - security - adaware
3. you also may want to download AVG pro or Zonealarm pro from here if you have no antivirus software.
4. Also consider changing your webbrowser to firefox, you can still keep you ie browser on your computer

follow point 1 and 2 to eliminate spyware and pop-ups. add point 3 for virus protection. add point 4 to make you computer virtually impregnable.

We got Mozilla Firefox as a browser but the problem continued for a while anyway. In our case it had to do with Internet Explorer being infected with a homepage hijacker which seems to consist of an unknown homepage, search engine and adware taking control of IE. XoftSpy program helped to find and remove the homepage hijacker files (as well as other types of spyware/adware/cookie trackers) but they would come back anyway -- some times in a matter of minutes.
We haven't had any more adware problems for the last couple of days, but I don't know if we are out of the woods, yet, so to speak. I read that the problem really stems from a chink in Windows that allows IE to be so easily hijacked, and that what is needed is for Windows to be updated through a specific patch....

I agree completely.
When I was using Internet Explorer with Zone Alarm (only the firewall but it's damn good), AVG antivirus, Adaware and Spybot Search and Destroy, my computer was still fairly well protected but with the occasional pop-up. Since I installed and started using Mozilla I have zero pop-ups and I've been using it for over 3 months.
Majorgeeks has a lot of very good freeware that will protect and support your computer. That's where I found all of the above software Jamal mentions, including the free versions for those of us not willing/able to purchase the software, and much more. It's a great site! Have an anti-browser hijacker installed called BHODemon; found it on majorgeeks.com.
Before started using Mozilla, whenever IE was hijacked BHODemon would give me an alert and allow me to remove the hijacker and reconfigure the browser to the prehijack stage.
BHODemon probably won't help you now; sounds like your registry is infected. Try this link and see how things pan out:
