What is the HD Loader?
The HD Loader is a piece of software that allows you to copy your original PS2 games onto a standard hard drive, to greatly decrease the time it takes to load your favourite games, as well as provide safety and security from your original game CD's and DVD's becoming unreadable due to damage (Perfect if you have younger people who insert and remove the discs themselves.) Also a lifesaver for people suffering from dreaded disc-read-errors or laser problems which can cause freezing, skipping, or problems within games (An example being the street textures in "Grand Theft Auto 3" being invisible.)

How do I install it? Do I need to open my PS2?
See the
Setting up my Hard Drive help page.

How does it work?
When you boot up the HD Loader software, it will access the hard drive, and display any data on it, this is shown by a list of games:

Simply highlight the game you'd like to play, and hit the "X" Button.

Additionally, you can press the Right button on the D-Pad to access the Toolbar features which allow you to:
PLAY: Play a selected game from the list.
INSTALL: Install a game onto the hard drive.
REMOVE: Remove a game from the hard drive.
RENAME: Rename a game's titles.

Below the toolbar are additional information relating to both the Game selected, and the hard drive installed. In this case, Final Fantasy X-2 is 3GB in size, the Hard Drive is 127GB in size (Due to formatting, the usable space is 125GB), and there is 11GB Free.

How long does it take to install?
Depending on the game size, A CD-ROM based game (One with a blue bottom to it) usually takes around 5 minutes as it’s less than 650MB.
Silver-sided discs (DVD-ROM) take anywhere from 7 minutes to around 30 minutes depending on the size (1GB, 2GB, 3GB, or 4GB).

What can I install? What can't I install?

You CAN install:
No, several games will not work and more have problems, see the main compatibility list for more details, however, most games work without any problems.  Also, dual-layer discs are not compatible with HD Loader and it will only read the first layer.  This means that the game will play off the hard drive, but will not work correctly (if at all) if it needs to access something from the second layer of the DVD.  The following games are dual-layer:

    • Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance
    • Xenosaga
    • Champions of Norrath
    • Madden NFL 2005: Collector's Edition
    • The Guy Game
You can get these games on to your hard drive but involves using a PC to install the games.  See the PC Installs help page for more details.

What are the compatibility modes I keep reading about?

This is a function that allows you to get some games to work with HD Loader that otherwise would not.  Its a very important function yet was left out of the HD Loader manual for some reason.  See the Compatibility mode help page for more details.

    Can I still play online?
Running games off the hard drive, you cannot play DNAS-Enabled games online.  DNAS stands for Dynamic Network Authentication System and is a security check to protect against modification.  You can still play these games online by inserting the game disc.  Older games may work fine as they do not have a DNAS check, but I get conflicting information on this, although the general trend seems to be that they will not work.  The following online games do not have a DNAS check (thanks go to
    ss_basra for the list):

    •  Amplitude

    • ATV Offroad Fury 2

    • Auto Modellista

    • Chessmaster

    • ESPN Basketball

    • ESPN College Hoops

    • ESPN NFL Football

    • ESPN NHL Hockey

    • Frequency

    • Madden NFL 2003

    • Midnight Club II

    • My Street

    • NBA 2k2

    • NBA Live 2003

    • NCAA Basketball 2k3

    • NFL 2k3

    • NFL Gameday 2003

    • NFL Blitz Pro

    • Risk: The Game of Global Domination

    • SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs

    • Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3

    • Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4

    • Tribes: Aerial Assault

    • Twisted Metal Black: Online
If you install one of the games that can be played online off the hard drive, do not let anyone else use you disc because online play discs have specific IDs and if the same ID is online at the same time, all PS2s using it receive a permanent ban on all online PS2 services including games, content and central station. Technically you shouldn't lend games out anyway but I think you would be hard pressed to find anyone who's never lent some form of media.

Do I need the network adapter even if I don't want to go online?

Yes, it’s required to physically connect the hard drive.

Can I copy my saves onto the hard drive? or download content from games such as SOCOM 2?
Yes and No. Yes, if you have an official PS2 Hard Drive. No, if you have a 3rd party hard drive (Such as Maxtor). If you're using a 3rd party hard drive, it will not show on the BROWSER Menu like the official drive does:

Do I need to delete FFXI if I use my official PS2 Hard drive?

No, All installed games will make an additional file alongside Final Fantasy XI, the only difference is that you will have quite a bit less room to work with than with a larger capacity drive.  Also be aware that Sony has implied that they may start scanning the official hard drive for HD Loader files.

    setting up the hardrive

You don't need to open your PS2 (voiding your warranty), or sticking anything silly into it to make it read stuff. You simply take a standard IDE Hard Drive (either the official one, included with Final Fantasy XI) or a 3rd party PC Hard Drive using an IDE Interface and a PS2 Network Adapter.  The Hard drive should be at least 40GB and HD Loader will recognise up to 125GB so anywhere up to there is fine, more is a waste but many people (including myself) choose to buy 160GB hard drives since they are not much more than 120GB and you get the maximum usable space (125GB).

You will notice that the Network Adapter has a standard hard drive IDE and power plugs, this is what the hard drive will be placed.

The Maxtor DiamondMax series is highly recommended and appears to be the best for the HD Loader.  Simply take the hard drive as well as the PS2 Network Adapter, and line up the connectors on each until it firmly plugs in:

Remove the plastic piece labelled "Expansion Bay" from the back of your PS2 Console and slide the Network Adapter/Hard Drive combination inside of it:

Ive been using this for quite a while now

and built up a nice collections of games from what Ive rented brought and borrowed ect ect

you can get the HD loader off bittorrent (cracked)

    so what ya waiting for

How much did it cost you?

Where did you get it from?

What games can you not load on to it?

Do you still need memory cards?

Sup Black,

I just wanna know how you installed this after you got your torrent copy?  Did you burn it to disc and install?

I though PS2's couldn't read CD-R's/DVD-R's ??

Peace.
