Hi Everyone,
Can you help me with a defrag problem. When I run the defrag program it keeps stopping and going back to the start, it won't defrag at all.
I then get a message telling me that the program has re-started 10 times and to stop my other programs from running. As far as I know I have no other programs running unless they are running in the background or something.
Any advice in easy to understand terms Pleeeeeease!
All the best
rubygirl

@ Rubygirl. If you have Windows 98, don't bother trying to use the built in windows defragmentation program, its rubbish. I would suggest a third party software such as diskeeper. I personally use this myself and it defrags my drive in less than 5 minutes depending on how fragmented your drive is.
You can download a copy of this program from here http://www1.execsoft.com/fulls/Diskeeper9_Home.exe
Lets us know how you did get on.

I have tried downloading the files for defrag program you recommended, however with it being a long download (over 2hrs) my server keeps on dropping the connection after about 20mins. Any suggestions. Otherwise will try again later.

Ruby girl
If you haven't sorted it yet, you need to run defrag it in safe mode. In normal mode you have agents constantly writing to your hard drive and each write will cause the defrag to start from scratch.
When you turn on your pc press F8 when it says starting windows and it will present you with a menu.
Choose safe mode and start defrag once you get to the desktop. None of the drivers are loaded in safe mode so nothing can write to the hard disk. It should run straight through without ever restarting.
When finished shut down and restart as normal.

Well! I did has you said but did not get a screen up for a "Safe Mode" not sure why? Anyway! I went straight into defrag and WOW! yes it worked and so I am now totally fragmented....thanks to a little F8 key and someone with great IT knowledge.
Anyway! thought I would run "Scandisk" and get that sorted however I am having the same problem with that it just keeps on restarting and promping me to close all my programs.....HELP! again please!

Ruby girl, did you get a menu when you hit F8? if not you didn't press it quick enough. If you got a menu but there wasno safe mode option something is wrong with the install.
If you get the menu there should also be a Command Prompt option where you can run defrag and scandisk from albeit extremely slow.
Sounds like you could have a virus or your hard disk is too full - and Windows 98, girl you need a new pc
btw I do call outs
