Hi - I'm doing some research for my dissertation and  I want to look at the Black experience in the UK IT industry.  From what I have seen, we seem to be heavily represented on the service side of the industry as opposed to the  creative and I would like to find out what are the possible reasons for this.

I know there must be some game designers, software designers, etc, out there, but where?  Am I looking in the wrong places?  Are you in the industry?  Are you doing what you originally set out to do?  Were you encouraged at school/college to persue a career in IT?  What obstacles, if any, have you encountered?

I will be extremely grateful for any contributions - Thanks!

Hi

Give a girl a break!  Could someone respond to this request. (Pretty please?)  There is oodles of stuff relating to US, but almost zilch (as far as I can see), about the UK, which is my interest area.  So if the mountain won't come........................

I am also trying to discover if there is a site specifically for black computer gamers.

The fact that I support Arsenal should not put anyone off from responding!

Thanking you in anticipation

Hi Ginger,

Dont know if I can help, but I'm a Computing Graduate (Games Software Development), I'm not working in the games industry yet though, I'm currently doing an internship at a media company as a website developer.

At school and college I started off in more Art based subjects, doing Design, Art, Photography, Illustration, Computer Graphics etc. It wasnt until I was in college when applying for Uni that I decided to do computing, I was given an uncondionale acceptance onto the course and graduated this year.

To try to find out more on Black people working in games development get in contact with develop, its a games industry magazine or Edge, people working for them may be able to point you in the right direction, Edge had an indepth look at racism and the lack of "non-white" characters in video games a while back, and develop features a games industry directory, for IT also get in touch with industry related magazines and they may be able to point you in the right direction with companies.

Hey DJ1

Thanks for the info!  My supervisor told me about Edge, but I hadn't heard about develop.  I didn't appreciate how difficult it would be to get information on this subject, but this will be a big help.

I'll add my two pence.

Over the years I've known many black people in the IT industry but end up in the service area rather than the decision making process. It seems like a closed shop unless somebody can prove me wrong.

I am currently studying BSc in Computer Science although I've been trying get into IT in the public sector for quite a while...without success. It's a case of employers are looking x number of years experience in a related field.

In related/unrelated matter I've recently learned Java although I had been programming in Basic (if you that old) and c++. Ideally I would like to move into 3D graphic fore games/films.

Hi Ginger,

Been working in IT for a number of years now, as 1st/2nd line and 3rd line support. Involved in quite a lot of network support as well.

I suppose in the IT field you will find what suits you best, be it support, management, network/system design, troubleshooter or programmer.

I for one feel stepping over to management would slow my technical development and that I would not like (I may be wrong) but thats how I feel.

Hi

Ok, down to business!

Miss Mention: Did you find it hard to get into your area being black and female?  Would you consider going into the creative side of IT?

Huzzah1: Do you feel that learning Java will improve your chances?  ( I remember Basic, so I guess I'm old :))  Have you met any black game designers?  Do you feel that your course will be an advantage?

Rootchiller: What attracted you to IT support and was it difficult to get into?  Would a move to management mean less time in the firing line? (re: slowing your technical development)

Are black people where they are out of choice or because those are the areas open to them?  I am also interested to find out how IT is marketed to black students.  I am hoping to sort out an online questionnaire soon, but I'm still trying to iron it out.  Anyway thanks again for your contributions.

Ginger

Hopefully learning Java will make me a bit more marketable, although programming jobs are being shipped off to the far east where labour is cheap. The course will certainly help as long as I get a good decent grade but I need to build up my work experience.

I have never met a black game designer although I know there are some out there who aspire to be.

Following leaving college many moons ago I worked as a secretary then decided was sick of it and therefore started to study 2 evenings a week for a BTEC Comp Studies course and passed that then was on the look out for an IT Helpdesk role which I found but took a £2k drop in wage (I didn't find it hard to secure the job but then why should I have a big drop in wage).  After 4 months on the breadline got a long term contract on another Helpdesk and have been doing Helpdesk/Service Desk roles ever since.

In terms of what I would like to do in the future I would be interested in getting involved in Microsoft Exchange Support or being a Microsoft Outlook Specialist because right now I feel a jack of all trades, master of none.  I'm not sure where to start to achieve this like what would be the best course maybe someone else could suggest one.

Also I do like the creative side of IT but need to be shown how to use for example web design software.  I own/run 2 web sites so know how to do the basic updates/uploads for them but wouldn't know how to create a web site from scratch.
