Greetings Techies ,
Sometimes, when I am in the main Black Forum menu I can see the whole screen, then go into a forum and the screen is so wide that I have to scroll left and right as well as up and down.
How come?
Is there something I need to or could change at my end or is a techie thing

Question....What resoultion are you running at? (Right click desktop-> properties->settings)
I had to drop down to 640x480 to get horizontal scroll bars.

Hey Nick,
So you had the same problem? I have 1024 by 768 at the moment. It seems to be fine now, but I will try and do what you did then test and see if that sorts it out.
Thanks

No sorry, I run at 1280x960, but to get scroll bars to appear, I had to lower it down to 640x480.
But if you say its working fine now, it might have just been a minor bug that has gone now. In which case utilize the old proverb. If its not broken, don't fix it.

1. Open up the forum to a page where you are having this problem
2. Press "Print Screen" button.
3. Open up paint and paste the image and save as a JPG
4. Attach the picture in the post
I can then have a look at what might be causing the problem

| The widening sometimes occurs when people post images that are very large or hyperlinks that are very long. Notify one of the mods when you notice this and they can fix it for you.

@Nick/All: OK reading back what I said it's not clear. It's not horizontal bars I want it's horizontal bars I want to get rid of.
E.g. viewing the screen I have now, I can see all that's been said from avatar to the mailing list boxes. When I go into other threads I am having to scroll left and right to see the whole message. So I'm scrolling back and forth rather than up and down as is standard .I don't just get it here either. On other web pages the same happens .

At a first glance I would suspect this is something to do with the AOL browser, if you open up the forum's with Internet Explorer do you get the same problem?
Some posts are slightly wider than others due to some people's avartars, but that shouldn't matter too much unless the AOL browser is causing problems. Or if you have set the browser font size to high. Try setting it slightly lower, it should be found in one of the view menu's.

It may be the browser but I'm so will tackle it tomorrow.

The width of the text area can change because a poster inserts a LOOOONNNNGGGG URL for people to link to. It may have nothing to do with your machine. I have been combatting this on my posts by making the long URLs {size=1} though that has to be square brackets instead of curly brackets.
A more sophisticated method is a site called tinyurl.com which will give you a short URL for a big one.
You could also code a label for the URL but the syntax for that varies with different sites. There should be an explanation for how to do that in help but I haven't checked. I'm a lazy bum and don't want to remember how to do it on each site I go to.
The next time you have to scroll left and right look up and down the thread for someone having posted a LOOONNNGGGG URL.
I have been to sites where the system automatically only shows a portion of the URL. Maybe they could do that here. HINT! HINT!

Actually I don't have Explorer but at work I did and that's where I noticed the problems. I don't see any view menu's either. Does that mean though that I'll need to change the view for every page it happens on? That's long!
@Drunk & umbarchist: Thanks for that. For a minute you had me baffled but it makes sense. I have been combatting this on my posts by making the long URLs {size=1} though that has to be square brackets instead of curly brackets.
How? I may have to do that with the other sites.

I don't know what you mean by this.
tinyurl will only prevent your posts from causing the wide screen problem. It won't fix someone elses.

TinyURL!Once this is on your toolbar, you'll be able to make a TinyURL at the click of a button. By clicking on the toolbar button, a TinyURL will be created for the page you are currently at.
This is compatible with most web browsers and platforms as long as your bookmarks or favorites allow javascript. The links toolbar may not be visible in all setups and in most browsers, you can enable it in the View->Toolbars menu of your web browser. You can also put it in your bookmarks instead of the links toolbar.
tinyurl will only prevent your posts from causing the wide screen problem. It won't fix someone elses. Could I have read the second highlighted part wrong then? It sounds like I should be able to change the whole page I'm at.

I was just about to tell you that this wasn't the problem...then I tried again....and it worked I've got the full screen at 1024 x 768. After all that*shakes head in bisbelief*.
Anyway, thanks so much all. I'm sincerely grateful down.gif" ALT="blkbowdown">
