It is easily possible for the data stored on a computer to be worth more than the computer. An external drive is about the fastest, easiest way for most people to do backups.
I have a second drive inside to do backups but I mounted an external power switch to turn it on and off. It doesn't make sense to spin the backup drive all of the time. But most people don't want to go into their computers.

My advice would be go for the largest external hardrive you can afford, No longer can we say that a hardrive is too big or has space we are never likely to fill.
It's easy to fill a 100gb drive now with movies alone but if you really want convinience let me introduce you to a little gadget I treated myself to before xmas.
It's a media centre hardrive you get leads with it so you have the convinience of conecting it to your tv, this is a very convinient tool. Because it means you can carry your entertainment and downloads with you without the need for a pc because it plays all the file formats avi divx Mp4etc.
I got mine off ebay and I have had no problems with it but there are other companies that do similar.
Anyhow it's somthing to consider let me send you a link to the media centre hardrive I own.
Let me add the drive I own plays
,Mpeg1/2/3/4, AVI, Xvid, Divx, Jpg, Vcd,Vob as well as being a 9 in one card reader. You even get a remote control with it.

If you download music of the internet from places like Limewire it is good to have an external drive so that you can keep Limewire and all the music that you download on your external HD. This way your computer will be less likely to suffer from the problems that music file sharing sites can create. My niece persisted on downloading Limewire and i refused to let her download it to my computer so it went on my external HD which i am completely ok with.
External HD's are also useful for storing pictures, documents, programs and for doing back ups.
I just use an ordinary 2.5 HD that i had from a pervious computer in a HD 2.5 enclosure for my external HD.

| ^ Yes it is very possible to have a virus affect the the internal drive if you have your drives setup as a RAID Array. RAID Array is data sharing across one or more drives automatically. Some worms will also cause you a problem. The best thing to do is make sure your virus protection is up to date.

It's also worth keeping your operating system up to date with current updates patches etc.
Lets not forget we are all as good as beta testers for microsoft with the operating systems we use on a daily basis. And vunerabilities are being found all the time which is the reason why there are so many patches updates etc.
So make sure you visit microsoft page regular to get your updates. Better still configure your computer to do automatic updates.

It cost me $600. I considered it a bargain.

Ok that beats my record which was only down to supply and demand at the time.
1995 i paid £1000 for a complete system which had a 1gb Scuzzi (spelling) hardive. That was a bargain as ordinarily it would have retailed for twice that price if i hadnt had it built for me.
