am thinking of getting this mp3 player since, after 4 and a half years of loyal and active service, my CD player just died (RIP). Anyway i have been eyeing up this model for a while, but it seems alot to shell out considering i have never had an MP3 and don't know whats good. But have heard many good things about creative.
Anyone have this model or similar? what are your thoughts. Reviews look good so far...

| I went on ebay and bought one from Tokyo and hey it's been 2 months, my money gone, yet no mp3 - I was really pissed off I should've steered clear from ebay - but I have bought so many beautiful bargains from there before; but word of advise buy one from somewhere you can have contact with customer services if you aren't happy with it. In the meantime I am using one I got from HMV, which is pretty basic needs charging an awful lot and I had to replace their ear phones cause they ones that came with it were useless, so in all avoid buying cheap. I was determined to get anything BUT an ipod because everybody told me that they weren't the best and so on. So I tried a few different models and they all had problems. Either with synching properly or crashing or dry batterys.
Since I relented and got the ipod I've had exactly NO problems and the damn thing is a joy. I've even gotten to prefer itunes to wmp. I'm a heavy user with a large overwieldly library and lots of bouncing outdoors useage and I've had this toy a while now.
I don't know about this specific model MB, it wasn't one of those I tried but those are my thoughts anyway.

see, that is exactly my worry with any brand of mp3. while researching on amazon (which i have been doing for well over a year!) peoples main complaint with ANY make or model is the fact that it packs up, breaks down, loses songs, or just plain doesn't work quite arbitarily.
I kept hearing that creative were better than apple and that apple weren't even the first to come out with mp3's, they just popularized it.
But so far i have read no complaints about this particular model. But i guess if its relativly new, faults won;t have had time to show themselves.
I worry that i'll get it now then in about 3 months i will start reading revies about how bad it is lol
Point is, it's a hell of alot of money to pay for something that only seems to have a shelf life of a few months (although in looking around £161 is cheap for 30 gig considering some 4gig cost nearly that!!)

i hve actually seen the model i want from an ebay power seller http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEW-CREATIVE-ZEN-VISION-M-30GB-MP3-VIDEO-PLAYER-PINK_W0QQitemZ290084673285QQihZ019QQcategoryZ73839QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item2 and they have 99.3% positive feedback on well over 40,000 sales.
But i understand what you are saying about buying from ebay (even though i too have got lots of great stuff from there), which is why i was trying to steer clear of them. But i would save nearly £20 on the amazon price (which i thought was cheap anyway!)
But as this person is a power seller with an "ebay shop" i was thinking maybe it would be ok.
For something like this, and that amount of cash, i would never go to an "ordinary" ebay seller. They themselves could just be trying to get rid of a defective product (assuming you receive the order in the first place!).
I wouldn;t be bidding on the item in the normal way, because it would be from the persons online shop. Plus it would be shipping from within the UK.
I should probably take my own advice. I am always saying "anything good ain;t cheap and anything cheap ain;t good" and "buy cheap, buy twice" but i am REALLY tempted to get this from ebay, despite dire warnings!!! Plus the ebay seller has more info about it than amazon.

see, now i am also trying to steer away from ipods just as you were lol again, heard they weren;t the best and that creative were better quality with more features etc.
Also, i think a comparible model with an ipod costs in excess of £200 for similar features and gig. Plus it seems to have more negative feedback than the creative.
However you say you have had no problems with it, despite vigorous use (and i need to know it can withstand vigorous use and bouncing around!)
Now i am totally confused!! after a long time of shopping around, i thought i had found my model (original one i wanted at 20 gig is no longer available).
I was going to get an mp3 from long time, but other financial comittmants came up and my CD player was still alive (RIP) so wasn;t a necessity.
Now am more confused than ever!!
But if nothing else i will defo be doing some more shopping around before parting with cash.
Thanks for your help guys

ok, have just found an ipod that has similar-ish features for same-ish price. But this quote from one reviewer put me off
The main disadvantage of the iPod over the iriver is the fact you have to use iTunes, don't get me wrong, it's a good programme, but the iriver is so much more flexible as it is treated just like a hard drive so you can just drag and drop music, photos, videos and they will play on the device. With iPod you have to first move stuff to iTunes and then sync.
plus the ipod doesn;t have the 8 level eq of the creative and the same reviewer says iRiver has a better sound quality.
This is the model:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/New-Apple-iPod-Video-Generation/dp/B000HZBQ42/sr=8-1/qid=1172205038/ref=sr_1_1/202-1592701-5034231?ie=UTF8&s=electronics

next stop, iRiver lol though i think i have looked at those before. failing that, i may have to be getting the creative from ebay (sorry Footprints!)

Here's the one that we bought our teenager. So far there haven't been any problems. It is very easy to sync music to. We use Windows Media Mgr. a simple drag and drop. These units also come in a variety of memory sizes. I added a link so you can read some of the customer reviews:

PLEEEEEEEASE don't buy an iriver! It has so many glitches and mess ups it's untrue. That was the worst make of MP3 i had no lie. Crashed all the time, synched tunes out of order and not in right playlists or ten times in same playlist... it was just crap!

Anyway, despite numerous warnings, I'm sticking with iPod for now. Theyre easy to use and the best looking mp3 player out there. Never had any problems with them at all.

i think it may depend on what model of ipod you have. But i have tried to download iTunes on my PC on two occasions with no luck, plus they only take credit cards and all i have is a debit card, so i guess that strikes iPod off my list by default.
I have to say, so far i am still leaning towards the creative vision m!!

itunes comes with the ipod silly!
And you only need to pay for tunes if you're downloading them FROM itunes online shop. Your own music or stuff you download from somewhere else (p2p) is yours.

| Madame, I had the smaller version. The Creative Zen is awesome. But you must install the software, I think it is called Creative Jukebox. But it is an excellent mp3 player. Sound quality is good and you will never use up 30GB of space.

now i am torn between the creative and the ipod! it may have to be a case of "Ip, dip sky blue, who's it not you..."!!
EDIT: whoa that picture of the creative came out big!! maybe it is a subliminal message from the cosmos as to which on i should get!!

Wait a minute now. Do you want an mp3 player or a video/mp3 player.
I have an Archos because I wanted to watch movies.

at first i just wanted an mp3 player. but i figured it was better to get a "do-it-all" model to save me having to upgrade later on. Plus i have seen a creative 8gb for about £130 and ths cost just £30 more for an extra 26gb. So i just think this particular model provides value for money for all the features it has.
Even though i may start out just using it for music, its nice to know it has the capabilities if i want it.

Yeah, it's great for me because I take the train to and from work. I never got the chance to see "Snakes on a Plane" and I finished it up in a day and a half. Glad I didn't see it at the movies, because it sucked.

MB,
2gb should hold roughly 25 cd's, 4gb 50 cd's worth of music. The Sandisk model that I suggested also holds video clips and pictures. In addition, if you purchase your music from Rhapsody it is also easy because they sell Sandisk mp3 players.

its still creative but much cheaper. at least if it breaks down after a few months i won;t have thrown away too much money!! If it works out OK i will go for one with a hgher GB. But this one holds up to 500 songs which is plenty for now, or i may go for the 2gb model which is about £60.

I bought my niece one of those £50 Creative Zen Plus for Christmas and she loves it. She prefers it more than the Apple iPod and Apple Nano that she has owned in the past.
I have just sold my Nano and another cheap music player that was given to me by somebody who didn't want their own and i am thinking about getting a Creative this time and i own a Apple Mac laptop.
This is the Creative model that i am looking at but if i get it will be in white and green.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Creative-Player-Video-Playback-Radio/dp/B000GFEZH8/ref=pd_ka_8/202-0450058-3497433?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1173798462=8-8
I am looking at the 30GB model as well.
The Nano worked fine but i fancy a change. It is my birthday coming up soon and any money that i get i will put towards my new MP3 player.
I will also consider Samsung, Zicplay, Archos and iRiver MP3/MP4players as well. I think that if i can get a decent one that plays MP4 music that will swing it for me.
There is one big drawback to the Creative Zen Plus and that is that is battery power operated. If that was not the case i would pick up one of those myself.
I never buy anything of value from Ebay anymore unless it comes with a receipt or delivery note/invoice from a shop. A lot of these sellers just lie they tell you that you can get warranty and when you try to without a proper receipt you are stuck. It is safe to buy an Apple iPod on Ebay without a receipt though as Apple do not really care if you have a receipt or not. You can also buy an extra years warranty as well if you purchase a model that is under one years old. Not all manufacturers are the same though and some like Creative demand a store receipt/invoice for warrany purposes.Last edited on Tuesday March 13th, 2007 16:25 by rachie

I bought one of these but not from Amazon though and i never paid that much for the Zicplay Evo either.

thanks Rachie, but i have yet again changed my mind about the creative brand i want to get!! i am going to start out with the 1gb for under 40 quid http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000A3P3WM/ref=ord_cart_shr/202-1592701-5034231?%5Fencoding=UTF8&m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE.
value for money-wise it ain;t that great as getting a higher GB would work out cheaper if you are looking at £ per GB, but due to tight financial constraints(!) i can;t afford any more. Plus i am also going by * customer reviews and it gets an average of 4 stars based on 141 reviews, so not bad. And for the price and the fact that it is creative it is OK. if this one performs well, i will move on to a higher GB (wallet permitting!) i get paid next wednesday, so once i hit that "submit order" button, no going back!! (unless i change my mind AGAIN between now and next wednesday which, i have to say, is very likely!)
* One thing i have to say though, with regard to MP3s and reviews: I wish people would wait a few months before they review it, and not just a couple of days. OF COURSE they work great in the first week, its after a few months teething problems start to show. So most reviews are inaccurate as some who gave it a great review at first will come back a couple of months later complaining about how it malfunctioned and they can;t get it fixed!!

Well the Zicplay player was absolutely rubbish and it was faulty as well so i returned it and got one of these. I haven't got it yet but it should come some time this week.

You can buy a 2GB one cheaper from Amazon but i just wanted one in those colours.
I also got these headphones as the ones i ordered originally were just to big for my ears.
I got these from Amazon for £26 and used a gift voucher that i had to pay for it.

I know what you mean about those reviews. Some people even give their reviews for some things even before they have bought the product and it makes no sense.
We are really living in rip of Britain as well. Amazon in the US are selling the mp3 player i bought for $88 but it is double the price in the UK. I paid for mine before i saw it so much cheaper in the US otherwise i would have got a friend to mail it over to me.
Buying new batteries often for your player is going to cost you maybe more in the end than if you just went for the one you intended to do so in the beginning. I am looking into buying my niece some rechargeable batteries on Ebay now as she has spent to much money in batteries. The Nano plus is a very good player though.Last edited on Monday March 26th, 2007 18:34 by rachie

i received my creative nano on saturday and so fr so good!!! very easy to use, except i will be ripping from windows instead of the cretive software, as with the creative you have to input all the info yourself. on windows it coms up autromatically. if it continues to perform well, i will upgrade to the 8gb.
might get new headphones though as the ones it came with are a bit big for my lil ol' ears!!

You just have to have the olde geek/nerd perspective.

I just bought an Archos PMA400 off eBay.

I checked out iPods years ago and I went into the Apple Store with my Panasonic walkman. The annoying things about cassette is obviously the songs are always in the same sequence. After playing a tape enough my brain would automatically start playing the next song when one was ending. It's a strange phenomenon.
But as an olde computer geek the idea of a 10 gig hard drive for nothing but music is totally repugnant. So I wanted a Linux PDA with a hard drive that could also play music.
A bit of history here:
IBM introduced a mainframe called a 3033 in 1978. It cost $3,000,000. In January 1983 Byte Magazine did an article of benchmarks on numerous computers in multiple languages. The 3033 was the fastest in assembly language, PL/I and COBOL. I downloaded a C cross-compiler a few days ago and got it working last night.
Computer Language Seconds
IBM 3033 Assembly 0.0078 100% fastest CPU+SW
Pent 2 300 MHz C_GNU 0.0148
IBM 3033 PL/I 0.036 21.7% efficient
Archos PMA400 C_GNU 0.0538 TI OMAP5910
IBM 3033 COBOL 0.0824 9.5% efficient |
The Archos with a Texas Instruments processor beat the old IBM running COBOL. It lost to PL/I and assembly but it can play MP3s. It also has twice as much memory as the IBM could take and probably has more on-line storage. What mainframes had 30 gig on-line in 1978? This stuff is incredible.
It has wireless capability and records and plays videos. I've logged into BlackNetUK with the built in opera browser, it's usable but annoying because of the small screen. It plays audio books with the DRM security scheme though I have bypassed those with an mp3 sound capture program. It also has a microphone to record and with a mini-camera and the proper hook up it would be more convenient than my digital camera. Now I'll have to figure out this Qtopia interface. A geeks work is never done.
Do you know anything about Qtopia Dogon?

quick edit to my last post- creative nano still going great, but i said that when it finally pegged out i would get an 8gb. But whn i checked out amazon the 30gb worked out cheaper than the 8!! so i am going to end up getting the original one i was going to get in the first place lol but the lil nano is doing just fine!!#
i even ripped some old percy sledge and vandellas from napster!!! good to have my childhood back, although i miss the scratchy vinyl sound!!

A word of warning - Creative players do have problems with the audio jack for earphones. It may not appear on your model but with my zen the audio quality has deteriorated quite a bit. Creative repaired free of charge but he fault has appeared again.

hmm, that's worrying ...
my sister just got a creative zen. can't remember which model, but it is one of those small ones (not a nano, that's what i have) anyway, she had the same problem as me, that is, the ear buds are too big. she tried a couple other headphones (not creative brand). One wouldn;t work at all and the other produced very poor sound quality. I have looked at creatives website and their own brand headphones seem very pricey.
What model do you have TS?

It was a zen as well. Pitty as it was pretty cute. The problem is not with the earphones its with the plug it self. I changed the headphones several times and figured out this was the case.
If this does happen the warrenty does cover this being repaired. But mine is due to be sent for repair for the second time. With the model you have they may have improved it but its something to lok out for
