i have a wireless connection
my broadband is with ntl/virgin media though i use a wireless router so my laptopcan get access to the web and my wireless network is secure...thanks to safetyblitz

Yes, thats it. You can secure it by setting up the encryption AND specifying the MAC addresses of the laptops that may access the system.

| i think i'm starting to understand now lol. my mother says that they have a spare wireless router at her workplace. it has disks and everything. if she brings that home, is that gonna work? We have two laptops that we're tryin to get wireless.

It should work. You have to find out from your broadband provider is you have a static IP address or if you use DHCP. You should call your provider ahead of time and query them on what you need to know to configure your wireless router. Some require domain names or DNS server names to be configured.

Jus lemme say. I find this thread so damn weird because I have just bought a brand new laptop got home to find that the router we already had wasn't wireless So peeved has I really wanted it wireless. The laptop is wireless but I have to hook up the mains from the PC at home to use the internet on the Laptop which is pretty much useless as it's already on the PC. The wireless box is like £80 Not prepared to pay that at the moment on top of spending £600 on a Laptop. Bacoo I will definatly take your last advice and call the ISP to find out if the IP address is able to retrieve signals on other laptops in the home. We have broadband but I just want that Damn Wireless router

Check eBay, you may be able to find a use Linksys for a discount.
