naa you dont pay
its like a tracker...you input the postcode of where you wanna go and it uses your postition to guide you there
you can download maps of other countries ect ect too...they are quite good
you can get "knock off" one for about eighty quid if you find a good fiend.

You're better off purchasing a Garmin satnav instead of tomtom. Everything about its function is far superior to Tom Tom i.e. route calculations, mapping, voice prompts, traffic alert, bluetooth connectivity etc. Plus TomTom's support service is notoriously bad and that's not good considering they've been having problems with viruses lately.
I don't know how much you're willing to pay, but you can get a good deal on a Garmin 310 with live traffic alert on handtec.co.uk for £250.
For myself I'm waiting for the Garmin 680 when it's released in the near future.

I have a Garmin Streetpilot.
There are only 2 downsides....the wheel you have to use, plus when it says "recalculating" when you know you've only done what it's told you to do. Hubby cracks up at this, 'cos he's strictly an "A-Z" man (I can't read a map to save my life!)
As far as I'm concerned, any satnav is better than none, but why pay more (TomTom) for the same service(Garmin)?
I've just received my free update, so why worry?

I've never been a fan of the Streetpilots from Garmin, I've always found them quite naff. The screens are way too small to.
The nuvis are a lot better and the all the latest ones have 4.3 inch widescreen displays which are currently the biggest (excluding the ones for the larger vehicles) at the moment.

Unfortunately the Garmin 680 is only for North America, however I'm considering the soon to be released Magellan Maestro 4050 or the Navigon 7110.
