If by jumping you mean it plays a piece of the song then skips part of it and plays another piece then skips...with no silent period of the appropriate length during the skips.

That cannot be the speakers.  That is either the software acting freaky or something wrong with the music file.

What you describe has a number of possible culprit sources, and the absolute worst thing you could've done is update the entire application. I say that not because it mucks things up worse or is at such a bad thing, but because updating WMP might now prevent you from fixing the actual problem. It's okay though, don't uninstall or roll back anything just yet.

Now

1. First check and see where WMP installed-I'm betting its on c: with everything else, right? OKay no problem, BUT how much disk space do you have free on the same partition?

2. Next question-Are there any other media playing applications on the same drive such a NERO, REALPLAYER, I-TUNES, anything that you have been using, have recently updated or installed a codec for or changed any custom setting for? Remember you only have one sound device and all of those applications-if exist-need to use it. Change a setting for one and that app might force the setting for the device, in which case all other applications using it will catch hell.

If you answered YES to both these questions then you want to begin to patiently troubleshoot not WMP-but your SOUND DEVICE.

a) turn OFF or RESET all custom settings for the device. That means default or normal speaker settings , no environmental settings, no events, nothing. Make sure the microphone in the audio settings tab is OFF. Check your speaker plugs and wires thoroughly.

right-click on WMP and check to see what mode it is running in. Turn it on compatibility mode for a moment until you've finished troubleshoot. DON'T TRY TO PLAY ANYTHING YET.

Go into WMP's file types setting and check ALL THE AUDIO CONFIGURATIONS.Then while your CD is in the drive, right-click on the drive, select open with, and make WMP the default player for CDDA files.

Restart.

Now if nothing changes, check the performance tab and increase the buffer size by about 10. Try 25, then 30. DO NOT GO HIGHER THAN 50. Make sure acceleration is all the way on. Again restart.

If nothing changes still, then download the K-lite codec pack and also WMP audio codecs.

The very last thing you can do is to completely uninstall the sound device itself as well as the software(make sure you have the disc to re-install it). There are other trouble-shooting techniques but these are the basic ones you want to try.

Oh well, THAT tells me even more. When was the last time you defragged? And also you might very well need to 'wash' your system and free up slack file space. I have just the thing for that if you are able receive e-mail I will send you a utility or two that may help resolve the problem.

And oh yes, just to be sure your speakers are okay, try headphones. You wil at least have isolated that aspect of the problem.

If you don't mind me asking though- Windows XP? How much RAM? IDE, SCSI or SATA?
