I have worked with these on a Macintosh.  But don't you have a PC?

You can do crop with some of the Microsoft Office Tools. . .er. . .use Microsoft Publisher.

I don't know about "blur".  You might be able to find something similar though.

You could try a book.  Yeah, you can also use some stuff online.  But if you aren't a technut like many of us, you may have some issues digesting stuff.

You could also see if you could take a class.

Have you seen the prices for Adobe's classes . A good thing about them apparently is you can teach what you've learnt at the end of it.

In the meantime a couple of books: Classroom in a Book: Adobe Photoshop CS2 and Adobe Indesign CS2. Both come with useful CD's where you can practice the lessons that are on them.

Well, she can definitely get a book that has some type of interactive tutorial.  But as for classes.  Someone like LadyDay wouldn't have to take a full blown class.  A workshop should do.  I am not sure how things work in the U.K.  But I get invited to free workshops all the time.

I am just not sure as to how one goes about inquiring about these types of events in the U.K.

This one is in Birmingham and it's free.  Folks in the IT community are usually very helpful.  Do some networking and people will help you with any problem.

What do you intend to do with them if you don't mind me asking. They’re considered "industry standard" applications, but depending on what you want to do they're alternatives. Unless you're doing a large number of magazines and books indesign seems a little excessive, but I suppose it doesn't hurt to have and to learn. One of the most important aspects of photoshop I would say are layers and blending modes (will save you a lot of time and heart ache if you get to grips with them early on, also aviod excessive use of filters).

I would use something else for invitations, etc.

But Photoshop/Indesign are very big applications.  Paris could probably be a better guide here.

Alternatives to photoshop are as follows:

Paintshop Pro, much cheaper then photoshop can do most of the things photoshop can

http://www.saversoftware.co.uk/details-492.htm

PhotoPlus 6, I haven't used it makes similar claims to paintshop pro but is free:

http://www.freeserifsoftware.com/software/PhotoPlus/default.asp

you could try publisher for your layout work, again I haven't used it so I couldn't give an indication how it is to use. You could try the other "industry standard" software in this field Quarkxpress, if price is an issue it will probably be in the same price range as indesign. some layout work can be done in photoshop or illustrator with guides and grids, so one of flyers, invitations and the like but multipage magazine like projects will require the likes indesign or quark.

Also if you're interested in 3d try:

Blender

Truespace

both free, some tutorials on a lot of programes including photoshop and alike on:
