I got a one for ya.

I had a server crash on me and it looks like I lost the partition that was on the RAID 5 array.

The array was never reinitialized and still reports the same logical drive.  Does anyone have any experience recovering the partition in this situation?  I have looked into a couple of utilities.  One found some files, but neither could fine the partition.

I am looking at sending it out.

Thanks in advance.

Dogon - It's been a while since my hardware maintenance days so not sure how far things have moved on but....

Which Operating System (OS) was it running? If Windows you can try reinstalling the OS  and during the initialisation stage see if it tells you that a partition already exists and whether you want to delete or keep it or whether it thinks one has to be created.

Is it possible the format of the partition could have been converted say from one file system to another? i.e. are you trying to access it with an OS that will recognise it?

Try booting from a new drive c: and have the raid 5 boot as drive d: and see if you can access D:.

Risky but also try making the raid 5 array fail by removing one of the drives and see if the remaining drives recognised the partition.

Other than that, send it off, but make sure you've got some money:(

In addition to which OS.

How many drives in the array?

Hardware RAID or Software RAID?

The maker of the RAID system should provide recovery utilities for their product.  Too many possible variations.  Oh yeah, PATA or SATA?

Sorry for the late response.  But it was running 2000.  I didn't do anything to the array.  I have left it alone.

Well, the only way I could get the server to come up at all was to get a brand new drive and install Windows 2003.  But the file system is still NTFS.  I doesn't see a partition at all.  But I know the data is there.

Try booting from a new drive c: and have the raid 5 boot as drive d: and see if you can access D:.

That's what I did.  No effect.

Risky but also try making the raid 5 array fail by removing one of the drives and see if the remaining drives recognised the partition.

Hmmm. . .I didn't try that.  Thanks!

But we do have backups.  They will just miss a day of work with most of the stuff.  And I have already notified a DR place.

Dogon, I would say try reinstalling windows onto the raid array, and see if it says a partition already exists and if it does see if it says there is already a version of windows installed and whether you want to upgrade or install from new.

If there is no upgrade option then there can't be anything there and only a DR company can retrieve it for you safely.

Have no idea what free or shareware utilities are out there now but you could send it away and still get nothing which isn't uncorrupted back.

In all my days I've never known a partition to just disappear, corrupt maybe but still there.

Also may be worth trying a different RAID controller.

Well, I don't want to reinstall Windows on the array.  I am scared of losing data.  I tried using some bullcrap software from the Internet.  But they couldn't find the deleted partition.   Keep in mind, I have the same logical drive. . .it's just missing the partition.

But I am in touch with a place called DriveCrash.  They think they can get much of the data back.

Dogon - it's really just to see if it recognises a partion is there. After that stage of confirmation just abort the installation as in don'tcreate a new partition and don't install windows.

It's probably best not to touch it but the DR company will probably do the same thing anyway.

Well, okay.  I'll check it.  Looks like these folks don't want to do DR now anyways.

"White" folks are a trip.

I have no experience with an HP hardware raid.  Do you have an extra PATA drive so you can install Windows on the machine and then see if that Windows can talk to the RAID partition.  I presume this hardware RAID is a PCI 32 or 64 bit card in a slot.  You should be able to remove it to install Windows on a PATA drive if necessary.  I assume there is some kind of HP driver necessary.  An F6 disk to install the driver in Win2K?

Come to think of it there must be some kind of boot loader BIOS on the card if the RAID was booting the system.  Do you have the HP doc on this card and array?

It's all right now, Umbra.  The DR place recovered the data.  But, now the company is acting stupid.  We don't know if we want to pay for the recovery.
