Hackers, virus, crashes, thrashes, spyware, adware, lock-ups,lock-outs,spam, scans, updates, and activations.
Enough.
If you have a spare drive or extra space on your current drive give Linux a spin.

Does it clash with internet/Games/software applications and all that? Theres something addictive about windows... been thinking about getting an Apple mac or something but you can't build your own system with those things even though they are better all round I like the option of being able to dismantle my comp and build a super machine that'll be so powerful and fast it'll set lights blinkering on and off... dust shaking from ceilings with each mouse click, instant downloads and 3D visuals that'll jump out of the screen!
MUHAHAHAHAAAA!
The only let down with comps is that they've always been one step ahead of games consoles but the consoles are catching up, probably gonna start using that HDTV stuff in games soon.

Console games have already been in high definition. I know that with the XBox, I just had to go buy the Monster Cables to plug into my TV to get the HD resolution. Most XBox games tell you the max resolution of it, where it has to be at least 480p to be considered high definition.

As for Windows, I do feel Rebel-Lion in that I like to build what I want in a machine. However, since Mac just switched over to Intel processors, perhaps more modularity in their machines are approaching soon...who knows.

The only problem with Linux is finding which distribution suits you best, this can be a nightmare and is enough to put people off. Best bet is to search a mainstream website for info on the most user friendly version available, goto the shops and see which version is being sold then download a cutdown free version of it. Then use your broadband to update it.
What I have noticed is network speed is at least a 1/3 faster than xp.. for me anyway. This alone tells me xp is bloated with crap. Add it with virus, spyware all that nonsense which needs money to get rid of it and it's a joke, even governments dont use microsoft OS's because of the security risks it poses, what does this tell people?
Virtually everthing the average person uses a pc for and buys software for is free.....and usually a better version on Linux. What is up with that?

You shouldn't get caught up in the distribution mess...typically the way Linux distributions work is this- the longer the distribution has been around the better it is;
So Red Hat and Mandriva have had the most extensive development over the years.
Also because the GNU obliges Linux to be free, the distribution aspect is mostly relevant with respect of support-that is, when you purchase say, Red Hat Enterprise, you are buyig user suport, NOT the operating system itself.
Suse and Debian are geared more towards power users, server and development.
Newer distributions are likely to be faulty in one way or another. I would suggest downloading Mandriva 10 [the SECOND link] as opposed to LE2005. I have had troule booting LE but that is probably something I've done wrong in burning the ISO.
Does Linux 'clash' with games software etc.? The simple answer is that if you are in Linux-that's where you are and you shouldn't expect Win-based apps to be compatible [even though Linux CAN allow you to run Windows applications with WINE]. Yes there is still, and will always be a learning curve with Linux. But wouldn't you prefer to be in the drivers seat and control what your operating system does, rather than have 'Bill' make all kinds of-stupid-decisions for you?
So what IS the advantage of Linux over Windows?
With one installation you get
1. multiple desktops
2. office suite
3. graphical editors
4. play any multimedia
5. web server
6. pdf client [much better than adobe acrobat]
7. numerous browsers (text and graphical)
8. numerous editors
9. the GIMP (opensource's answer to photoshop)
10. midi maker/audio editing
11. palmpilot/fax/videoconfrence/cd-burning/IRC/chat client/
12. Ant choice of shell terminals [bash, tcsh, zsh]
13. archiving [gzip, tar]
You get the picture. But if you don't take the time to experiment and learn Linux you will never know. Go online do a little research , ge the system and just give it a home on your hard drive. I have Linux on another disc on my system and can boot to it any time I get sick of Windows-which is often.

Oh....
They should never allow consoles to get one over PCs man. Still can't play a decent war game on those pads though, the keyboard rules when it comes to games
I like the sound of linux. Definately use it for my comp when/if I get round to making it... get to play this;

Linux isn't a panacea. Windows and Linux have different annoyances. Microsoft is coming out with Vista to give us more annoyances. We could cure the ones in Linux.
http://www.madpenguin.org/cms/?m=show&id=5626
This book comes with Mepis Linux. What bothered me was not having the C compiler and mtools was missing. Later versions have this stupid aquarium in the task bar.

No compiler or mtools? Wow.
Did you do an anindividual pkg install?
I wouldn't really bother with these -what I call FBN (fly-by-night) tutor versions of Linux. they're not stable, thier packages are EXTREMELY BUGGY, and as you point out, they are incomplete.
Get a full version of Mandriva or Redhat and take it from there.
Fortunately it seems Redhat has improved a great deal over the past few years-and I say that since Mandriva (formerly Mandrake) was then a far more reliable OS and would install on just about any system.
Redhat on the other hand might crash in the middle of installation or install completely and then never boot or load. RH 6, 7 and 8 in particular were horrible (IMHO).
I've just gotten RHE_4 and plan to try it out today. Stay tuned...

Not having the C compiler installed shouldn't be that big a deal for most people. Unless you write C programs it is not TOO important. There are some package installs that want the C compiler though. Suse 10 doesn't automatically install the C compiler which surprised me. You have to shuffle 5 CDs around and it still doen't put the compiler in, that's ridiculous. The compiler is somewhere on the CDs but I had to find it and install it.
I was annoyed that mtools wasn't there but to an extent is was my own fault. If I had just bought a USB thumb drive and moved data with that it would have been easier than doing the floppy shuffle with mtools anyway.
I have messed with Red Hat, Slackware, Mandrake, Suse, Damn Small Linux, Mepis and Ubuntu. Each has been annoying in different ways. But Windows is annoying also and it has been getting more so since Win 2000 which is what I use most. I am considering not bothering with Vista at all but I expect to have dumb clients who will insist on it.
Ultimately this is about MONEY.
Do Black people world wide intend to pay BILLIONS for bloated software when putting our brains in gear can get us off the Macro$cam treadmill?

Yes it is good to waste money when you dont need to.
I've just switched from mandriva to ubuntu, it's even more user friendly than mandriva, both on dvd were quicker to install than windows on a cd...
May I suggest to those who might have an interest in linux to download a live CD and try it out first, I was able to use a live cd and browse the internet and use the operating system etc..whilst it was installing on my computer at the same time. No downtime accept a reset when I was ready to load the newly installed version.
"live CD" is a CD which contains a complete system pre-installed on the CD. You do not need to install anything on the harddisc, instead you boot from CD and are able to start working on the machine right away. All programs run directly from CD.
To get downloads for all versions of linux here:
http://distrowatch.com/
via post:
https://www.linuxmedia.co.uk/
Hardrive partioning is a pain in the backside if you dont know what you're doing, use a separate hard disk if you have one, they are very cheap for small sizes. A router with broadband modem is preferable as all updating etc will be done online internally. If people want technical support with linux, buy a packaged version from retail shops, or search for help, very easily.
People should just try a live cd/dvd, especially if you have older hardware, save money upgrading your computer will more than likely run faster.
As for Windows Vista, I tried the beta version that $oneysoft released on a spare partition., it took up 12gb of space after clean a install it looks like they've purchased or licenced stardocks windowsblind and object desktop software and bundled it wholesale into the operating system, it looked how my xp setup looked 2 years ago with the same software, but ran much slower on my lowly 1.3ghz, here's the joke.....after the 2 weeks beta trial in which I only used it once, it asked to activate the system by purchasing another key, it is now a complete waste of 12gb on a partition. Is this a sign of things to come? imagine a world where you pay yearly fees for an operating system which you've already purchased and locks up and holds you to ransom if you dont pay, hmmmn???

Questions....
I have two networked computers. Do I have to run Linux on both in order for them to talk to each other or access shared folders/facilities like ADSL routers or printers?
On web access....BT is my ISP - will my router software work, or will I have to ditch it and buy a new router? What about firewalls (currently use ZoneAlarm)? From my limited research, this seems to be a problem area, but I'm keen to learn more.
Similarly, on browsers.....I already experience some problems with accessing some features on some sites (like this one!) using Firefox and (more recently) Opera....would these be multiplied?
Playing/recording music...are compatible music players as feature-friendly as some Windows-based variants? I currently use MediaMonkey, which has features I like such as playback using crossfade, and displaying album art...and most of these features are free to acquire. (The full version costs about £10, and doesn't add that much)
Am planning to add TV/video capture to my multimedia capability soon.....can I do this easily with Linux?
Finally, what about compatibility with the rest of the Windows-addicted world? If I create documents/presentations/spreadsheets, can I save these in Word/PowerPoint/Excel format to send to others? I use OpenOffice 2.0 which is open-source - there may be a Linux version.
Would really like to wean myself off MacroScam (like that!); have gone a little way, but if I can deal with the questions I've posed, would help me greatly.
Thanx in advance.

@Soul Rebel,
You shouldn't have any problems browsing network resources on different linux distros. All linux distros ship with some form of samba support so you can browse network resources on windows PCs also.
Think of samba as a protocol translater that allows you to browse network resources (File/Print) on different Operating Systems.
I can't tell you whether or not your router will work (If modem or router is USB based) - this is determined by whether or not your router manufacturer supports the linux distro you've installed. Otherwise you shouldn't have any problems. Also Don't worry about firewalls - There are quite a few available that are probably a lot more efficient than Zone Alarm - LOL!
I've never experienced any problems accessing websites using FireFox - it is my default browser for web dev work as well. Firefox is available for Linux too - see http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all.html
There is a plethora of media players available for linux that I'm sure will offer you the features you need - with and added bonus - because they're open source, they're most likely to be free as well.
Regarding the TV/Capture - same as your router - compatiblity will depend on whether or not the manufacturer of your VideoCapture card (PCI)/USB Dongle have a linux driver available...
You'll be pleased to know that you can run a virtual version of any windows Operating System in Linux using virtualisation software such as VMWare workstation. This will allow you to run any windows app. Please note that you may experience latency issues if using graphically intense apps such as CAD, 3D Design/Rendering Software, and Video Editing Software.
http://www.novell.com/coolsolutions/feature/15963.html - this link provides info on how to install VMWare under Suse Linux 10
Hope this helps,
Bless.
L.

Yes you can share folders and printers but i personally haven't tried it yet. I dont have time(work) to delve into samba(networking), ADSL routers are fine, they are OS independent.
On web access....BT is my ISP - will my router software work, or will I have to ditch it and buy a new router? What about firewalls (currently use ZoneAlarm)? From my limited research, this seems to be a problem area, but I'm keen to learn more.
Check for your router. There is no problems with firewalls with linux...except they are free, this means they are functional, basically it helps to understand what it's doing, my biggest problem was stopping windows programs phoning home, there are a good few firewall and anti virus software availble.
Similarly, on browsers.....I already experience some problems with accessing some features on some sites (like this one!) using Firefox and (more recently) Opera....would these be multiplied? or lessened?
The problem I have with firefox is not being able to paste on this site, another is not able to use launch yahoo with firefox or opera so I dont visit it, to be honest, I haven't used internet explorer for over 3-4 years the cons far outweigh the pros...if any.
Playing/recording music...are compatible music players as feature-friendly as some Windows-based variants? I currently use MediaMonkey, which has features I like such as playback using crossfade, and displaying album art...and most of these features are free to acquire. Amarok" does all the above plus lyrics and artist bio's, cover manager addon scripts all internally.
Am planning to add TV/video capture to my multimedia capability soon.....can I do this easily with Linux?
Best thing to do is research what card you want to buy and how it works with linux. I've got a analog tv card, but cant be arsed to get another ariel for it. In fact I haven't used it for years.
Finally, what about compatibility with the rest of the Windows-addicted world? If I create documents/presentations/spreadsheets, can I save these in Word/PowerPoint/Excel format to send to others? I use OpenOffice 2.0 which is open-source - there may be a Linux version.
There is, it normally comes automatically with installation.
Would really like to wean myself off MacroScam (like that!); have gone a little way, but if I can deal with the questions I've posed, would help me greatly.
Thanx in advance.

To be honest, you have to get your feet wet, the words and terms used between the operating systems are completely different. First thing you will notice is that it will ask you for your password left, right and centre if you want to add, remove or do any sort of system change.... like it should, like the common windows setup does not. Equally you will be pulling out you hair if you dive straight in, I think its worth downloading a live CD and just boot it from the cd/dvd into memory to get a feel of things, see how it runs, what does what etc.... Then if you like, install it alongside windows, dual boot. This way you keep all your original home network etc. After you have been slapped by linux a few times, because you never done your homework, you will more than likely switch to it, relegating windows to a just in case 2nd position.

Many thanx for the info - much appreciated.
Must admit to not having too many problems with ZoneAlarm - though every time I update it I have to reset the settings which can be a pain. Seems to work OK otherwise, but if there's better out there, all good.
My problem with Firefox is largely to do with posting on this site (I can't), though I suspect that's to do with my machine settings somewhere rather than the program. There are one or two other sites I visit where there is restricted functionality, but no biggie. Will definitely try the Linux version. In general, I find Firefox far superior to IE - though Opera (using now) is pretty good, too.
Will definitely look out for the media players, as that's my most frequent usage. Good to know about VMWare, too - be useful to have as an alternative. Generally not into heavy-duty memory-hungry programs like CAD or 3D design, though may do some video editing at some stage so thanx for the heads-up.
Again, appreciate the input. Stay blessed.

Thanx for the detailed response.
As you can see above, I have the same problem as you with Firefox, though not with Opera which I'm using now to post this. On Yahoo, Opera won't play with their mail beta version, but it will access the original version - gave me the choice first time I visited with Opera, and now does it automatically. The beta version looks nicer but is slower to load, so not too fussed about that.
Thanx for the ref to Amarok - off there to explore next....
And also for the pointer on getting used to Linux. Take your point about getting your feet wet.....I downloaded a Knoppix distribution a while back, ran it, and within a couple of days my machine packed up.....don't know whether that was cause and effect, but I thought 'Hmmm....don't know 'bout this Linux stuff'.....The idea hasn't left me, though, and I'm ready for another go - probably with another distro. Would like, as you suggest, to get to a point where Windows is relegated to the bench, so to speak....
Once again, appreciate your time.
