Do you mean building a PC from scratch?

I think I've caught the bug and no doubt I'm going to need help later on - so just checking.;)

But having said that my existing PC refuses to give any sound. Everything I've read says to re-install the soundcard. But I did not install it in the first place! Anyway I did it anyway, but there is still no sound.

In the 'sound/volume' part in control panel all of it is greyed out - apparently esp the first two sections (in volume), that indicates a driver or soundcard problem.

In device manager it did have a'pci modem' with a yellow question mark on it. I said did have, because I went to change/remove hardware and stupidly removed it, I thought I could change it but it did not give me any options - it just went straight ahead and removed it. Now I don't see it anywhere! Why does it say 'change'?

Anyway so now I'm left with the problem of seemingly no soundcard and no trace of it on the system - yet it's inside the case!

I've got a cd which contain fax info and when I installed that, 'voice playback and recording' and 'sound recording and playback', are no longer greyed out but there's still no sound and the volume parts are still grayed out.

Before anyone ask - yes all connections are connnected up as they should - (first thing I checked since when I first got a pc a similar thing happend then and I learnt the hard way that is what you should always check first ;)).

Btw its a 'Realtek AC97 Audio'.

Anyone with any ideas?

The realtek is an onboard soundcard. Its part of the motherboard.

The reason it would be greyed out is if its disabled in BIOS or if an additional PCI soundcard is installed.

No doubt its one of those factors.

Thanks stick-up. Yes I read something about the bios too but its sooo complicated and the one thing they keep stressing is messing about with it could mash up the system and we, (Microsoft et al), takes no responsibility for any damage caused, meaning we're now off the hook if anything goes wrong thanks to that statement.

Anyhoo whenever I boot up I just get a pure black screen then Windows so ...

The BIOS looks scary but don't forget you don't have to save any changes you make.

Just go into it -- normally by pressing del or ins during the first few seconds of boot-up -- and have a browse but don't save changes until you're confident.

Figured as much.  Did it misidentify that PCI modem?

I asked because that is what usually happens to me.  Somehow the modem comes up as something else on systems that have that integrated pci sound/modem card.  It causes problems identifying the sound card.

Oh. Well I'm not sure what mine did exactly, except it did say 'pci modem' and it had a yellow question mark on it, but I went and 'deleted' it.

But anyway things are sorted out now so all is well:)

Yes I am system builder

And no the ROM BIOS has nothing to do with your sound card problem and you shouldn't be afraid to go into the BIOS. In fact the BIOS is completely independant from the Operating System-If you gutted your computer of everything but the motherboard and video card you'd still be able to see the BIOS.

As for the problem you're having with your sound card, I couldn't tell you what to do unless I knew (a) whether your sound was integrated or not (b) if not, what type of sound card and operating system you had (c) how long you've had the card in the system

But since I don't know this I'll suggest the following:

DO NOT MOVE THE PCI FROM ITS SLOT. Yes then you'll need to go into the BIOS (possibly) to tell it turn on the new slot if it isn't being used. While that's not a big deal its a pain in the neck, but usually the slots are read from the top down.

There is the possiblilty that the PCI slot the card is in is no good, in which case will have to change it. BUT make sure you DO GO INTO THE BIOS and turn OFF the slot thatisn't functioning. This is since when you boot up the BIOS will read something that doesn't work into your hardware configuration and allocate resource for it.

Go into the device manager and disable and remove the installed sound device.

Completely uninstall the card. Turn off the computer and remove the card from the PCI slot. Reboot.

Now pay attention here because WinDOZE should NOT detect the card. If it does, go into the device manager and find the sound device and disable/remove it in the hardware profile.

Turn the system off again. Clean the connectors and re-seat the card in it's original slot. Make sure its firmly connected. Turn the system back on.

Now WinDOZE should detect a new device. If WinDOZE requires the software, then put the CD in the tray, send the wizard to the location and install it. If you are using Win XP select the NT drivers for the device (note: Usually WinXP will install them automatically, so wait and see )

If you have to reboot, do so.

Now when the system starts again you SHOULD have sound. If not, go into the device manager and chack to see if (a) the device is enabled in the hardware profile (b) that there are any marks next to the device. That would mean an IRQ conflict or misconfigured DMA channel.

If nothing is wrong there, and you still don't hear anything at all, if you have speakers connected, remove them and use headphone to test for sound. Go into the sound device's settings and also Window's settings and MAKE SURE THE VOLUME IS TURNED UP, ALSO, MAKE SURE THE 1 DIGITAL OUTPUT BOX IS NOT CHECKED.If it is you'll hear nothing from now on.

That is about all I can tell you at the moment, and if none of that works then maybe its time for a new sound card...

One last thing...I see you've mentioned something about an integrated modem. THAT is a DMA channel issue. Not a PCI slot issue.

Peace.
