It looks like pretty recent technology, so maybe not many have direct experience - I don't....but you would use it in the same way as you would use a USB cable - for example, to connect a laptop to a modem/router - so I don't see that it affects your ability to connect to the Internet if your laptop has a mobile Ethernet card - you wouldn't need a USB connection for that anyway....or have I misunderstood?

This might explain better than I can:

LadyDay don't do it. I started this job as a consultant last year October and I've never done so much pen pushing in my life - the documentation is relentless. I got given a laptop to do the job which means I do get plenty opportunity to work from home. It has wireless connectiviity and I tell you I'd be compiling docs and posting on blacknet simultaneously all day....you're even browsing when sitting on the toilet LOL

@ Ladyday.. it is the cost that will cripple you (literarily)

Subscribe to Vodafone, you will received pcma card, using the infra-red of you mobile phone.. your laptop must have infrared connection.. In December 2005 the vodafone were chaging £35.00 monthly subscription plus .30p for duration. Vodafone will require good credit status though..

=============================

If you already have a broadband or relatively highspeed internet connection, then all you need is connecting Ethernet cables and a wireless router like this...

This Linksys router is the one I use in my home.  I have cable internet where I connect my PC to the router and then the router to the cable modem to get my internet.  This router can have up to 4 desktop computers connected to it and a limitless amount of wireless connections.  I have a laptop which has the wireless card/antenna built into the monitor for 802.11 b/g.  Make sure the router you get says "G", so that you get the most versatile protocol support (for wireless technology thus far), although a "B" router would work fine (with slower speeds).

Every new laptop should have wireless built in; however, if you need a peripherral device for this then you could use one of several wireless USB devices...

I do have the second device above made by NetGear.  You could even plug this into another PC/desktop and pick up a wireless connection.

As for network security, simply turn on the WEP in your router with whatever passphrase you want.  To be honest with you, I have cracked every wireless network I have attempted (I am an electrical engineer).  The encryption is weak.  It only keeps out people who don't have the know-how; furthermore, most people don't even turn the WEP on, so no need to bother.

If you are just going to snoop on someone else's network, it is ok but you don't know how their internet connection and congestion may be.  You also have to worry about getting a strong enough signal tapping someone else's network.  When I am at home, I have an excellent signal no matter where I am with the laptop...even outside.  You may not be so lucky tapping someone else's.

Well, the brotha you are talking to here is pretty sharp.  Yeah, it doesn't eat up much memory.  Just enough to run the wireless driver.  A USB connector will be pretty cheap, since is it slower.  But if you are just using it to access the Internet, you won't notice the speed at all.

As for being "switched" on, your USB connector should connect automatically when you power up your computer.  So you don't have to leave your computer on.  If you have any problems it will be because of distance/interference etc.

But the brotha who you are talking to here is right-on everything he has said.

ditto on what Dogon said...you should have no worries about memory or anything.  The USB drivers of your computer handle the USB port so you don't have to worry about turning it on.

As for the "main PC", once you connect through a router, there is no main PC.  Every computer connected whether wired or wireless are on the same network...your own home network.

LadyDay, I think the lesser expensive Linksys will do just fine.  I have not worked with Belkin, etc.

But I know Linksys well.  They make good products.  You won't need to worry so much about speed, especially if you are only going to be web surfing.

===============================

Yes, the router connects to your broadband modem through an Ethernet (CAT-5) cable.  You should be able to get one where ever you got your router.  You then connect the router to your PC with another Ethernet cable.

=================================

Once you connect your broadband modem to your router, you will be able to browse the internet with your laptop where ever you are in your place.

Now, when you say your PC can't support Ethernet, I find this hard to believe.  Nearly every computer built in the last 4 years (at least) has an Ethernet port in the back, typically adjacent to the old 56K modem port...that is unless your computer is absolutely ancient.  But even if it is, it is a simply problem to fix if you want to incur the extra costs.  You can install an Ethernet card into the PCI slot of your PC (or have it installed).  I installed one on my very first computer, and it was about $20 for the card then.

LadyDay wrote:  i just pray to God i get to take back the adaptor

============================

The stores here, you can take it back within 30 days as long as you have the receipt.

Hey ladyday, it depends on what type of broadband you have. If you have aol, NTL or one of those ones which you plug in a USB (usually supplied with ASDL modem)to your computer to get internet access, you are going to need an ASDL Broadband Wireless Router.

When you get this router, you don't need your modem again, the router connects to the internet, and you then get wireless internet on your laptop, and you can use a cable to connect your pc to the router,  you can buy a wireless PCI card or a USB  for your main pc.

The advantage of this router is that you don't have to login everytime again, also your internet will be on on 24/7, so when you switch you pc off, or whatever you used to plug in the USB cable before, the other device would still be online .

you could connect many pcs online at the same time.

Ofcourse you have wireless internet on your laptop, meaning that you can work or Pm me from the Kitchen at any time, you can take you laptop to anywhere in your house and still be online.

the point is that the one you need to buy wouldn't need USB. This is because you would connect to it using a cable or through wireless. The cable will go from one of the ethernet port to the internet port on your pc. Hmm, you will connect your router to your phoneline using a (US to US )wire( all included ofcourse).

By the way, you need to setup the router, you would need to put your password and loggin name when your configuring the router.

You can buy one from Staples, Dixons , PC or your local computer shop or even a computer fair.

http://www.dixons.co.uk/martprd/store/dix_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@0115447452.1148240556@@@@&BV_EngineID=cccdaddhlekjlfgcflgceggdhhmdgmk.0&page=Product&fm=null&sm=null&tm=null&sku=904351&category_oid=

What company is your broadband with, note that other routers which are not ASDL routers are cheaper, but they wouldn't suit you if you are currently using ASDL modem to connect.

Ah, that's the issue.  I didn't understand at first.  Your internet modem hooks into your pc via usb.  That's a different situation.
