A couple nights ago, windows did it routine "updates" thingy. Not that I even knew what that meant.
Anyway, ever since then, everytime I switch on my computer, I get a message telling me that my version of windows is not genuine. At first I thought it was spyware but I don't think so now because it comes up at my start up screen before I even get to my desktop. And now, I have a little star shaped Icon at the bottom of my screen (next to the clock) and It keeps popping up a baloon saying the same thing. And when I click on it, it takes me to a microsoft.com web page telling me to buy a genuine version but I know that my version already is.
What the hell is this?

Major updates to Windows (assume you mean XP) will verify the product key (a twenty-five character series of letters and numbers) as part of the process; there are certain keys that are known to have been widely pirated, so it may be that you have one of these. Microsoft are very hot on eliminating pirated software, and this is one of the ways they try to minimise the impact on them.
Do you have the XP installation CD or not? If you have, you will have the product key (you need to enter it as part of the installation process), so you can check this out at the Microsoft site. The problem you describe is more likely if if you haven't (e.g, you bought the PC from a legit source with XP pre-installed). It won't stop you from using Windows, but it will prevent you from downloading supposedly important fixes to security holes in the XP system (which is what most updates are about, at least according to Microsoft).
I had this problem a while ago, and my way around it was to find and install a new product key - there are loads floating around on the net, and programs that will help you install it and will tell you what your existing key is if you don't know it. Alternative would be to email Microsoft directly to explain your situation - especially if you have the installation CD - quote your product key in your message.

Means you're pirating scum basically.
You could try a fresh install and type in your CD KEY again, however you'd be wasting your time, since the warning doesn't actually do much but stop you downloading new updates to Windows XP.
Personally I wouldn't bother purchasing a new copy since a Windows has a new version out soon (early next year).

If you research Seattle Computers and Gary Kildall you will find that the DOS sold to IBM was stolen from Digital Research and IBM knew about it but legally double crossed Kildall.
There are strange stories floating around about Gary not bothering to meet with IBM but it looked really strange when IBM priced CP/M for the PC at six times what they charged for PC-DOS. Why did they do that?

Not sure it matters which brand you buy, to be honest, if they've installed XP in the same way. What you really need is a legit product key - and there are ways of getting that.... Or you could turn off automatic updates on your PC if you have it.
But do not pay full retail price for the CD - it is an absolute rip-off (£200+ for a string of code????) The reason Microsoft has the piracy problem in the first place is because they are so greedy....long live open-source....

Soulstar would you send me a pm
Let me know exactly what version of WinKP you are using -Home or pro.
I may have jus tthe thing to fix that problem of yours.
SoulRebel is correct about the product key, but getting a stray key doesn't necessarily fix the problem. Here's why-
When you are told that your version is not genuine, this has nothing to do with the CD key itself. It has to do with the activation key code which is a hash file Microsoft generates specific to your machine. If WinXP is not activated in 30 days (14 for Server) it will shut down and you will not be ale to use it.
In your case you cannot auto-update anything. Whatever you do don't attempt to activate the OS-that just makes things worse.
I have Win 2000m XP pro sp2 , home, Office 2003, and server, get all the updates and haven't paid a dime for any of them.

Hrunopi would you PM me too?
I just had to reply to this as I had a similar problem, but I had the CD!
Microsoft seem to have a problem with Retail vs OEM. It means one is brought in a huge box, (not Eco-friendly I see Micro?),- 'Retail' and the other brought with the PC itself, (OEM).
My problem wasn't the Product Key but the Activation.
After a shouting match with Microsoft, (of which I won lol - they had the nerve to tell me I brought counterfeit goods!), but I brought it from a reputable source!
Anyway they finally gave me the activation number and I was in.
MicroSCAM it too soft, (pardon the pun) a word for that Company.
Rather like the UK police, they assume everyone is guilty until the victim can prove themselves innocent.

I've had two updates since then, so I'm not quite sure what's going on - and though I can live with it, the message does irritate, so if there's a way of getting rid of it would be good to know. Run on Win XP Pro, with SP2.

I understand you purchased your PC 3 years ago, your options are still good, you can:
Go back and tell the shop they used either an illegal copy, or most probably used 1 CD for multiple installs without accuiring the necessary multiple seat licences to do so, all it takes is for a certain amount of people who bought a PC from that shop to use the update feature such as yourself. This will kill the license and is the shops fault regardless of how long ago they sold it to you. BTW if I owned a PC shop I would've done the same thing.

or
If I can remember correctly you can still do an auto-update if you have the auto update icon in your taskbar, bottom right. Even if the update website says NO, you will still get sercurity updates. This is just one of the many reasons why I don't us windows no longer.
I know it's been a couple months since you've made this thread, what did you do or have done about it so far?

Soulstarr,
The same thing happened to me a few weeks ago, and I was ready to kill my brother, but somehow it's fixed itself.

Now if Black people world wide would start talking up standardizing on Linux we could get away from this bullsh!t.
The code that Microsoft puts in to track the keys plus stuff to keep people from pirating their software by cracking the keys plus all of the stuff various manufacturers do to your system via the internet makes for unnecessarily complicated and fragile systems.
I am not saying Linux is some bed of roses. Microsoft has centralized information hiding and Linux community has decentralized information hiding. That is why we need to share info to bypass the info-hiding.

I have to agree, not to mention windows is probably one of the biggest security risks on it's own ..because everybody uses it, therefore it will have the most attacks against it. I also know not many people uses a firewall correctly, they'll let the firewall make an auto-rule to allow access to the internet for certain programs not relising that the program doesn't even need internet access... like burning tools or word processors etc....
All I know is now I'm 100% legit with freeness doing exactly the samethings as before.
BOT....
Has anyone actually got an original windows xp in a box/case, that wasn't purchased separately or preloaded on a PC?
And I'm not talking about a drive image, which is what you get with new PCs.
