Get Windows XP installed from computer to another,if not how much roughly does a new Windows XP software cost and also how come my speakers dont seem to be compatible with my lappy, even though they work great on my ipod and every other piece of kit.My "new" laptop is circa late nineties.
Do you think I have to get a new sound card or sumfink?(duh i'm so clueless it's unreal).
I have reconfigured all the sound settings on this lappy but I still barely get a sound through the speakers, its audible but only to those with bionic hearing,or is it posible that my speakers are powerful for this ancient piece of kit? And is the sound card the same as my ethernet card and if not where does the sound card go.

Oh this lappy is operating on Windows 98but i'm told that this shouldnt affect the sound quality.

Installation disk for XP anything between £60 - £100 depending on the version you get (Home (cheaper) or Professional). Best go online or to a computer fair. If you want to change from Win98 to XP, you need an upgrade disk - otherwise it's a fresh install which will overwrite everything on your hard disk, so save any files you need beforehand on other media (memory stick/CD/DVD/whatever).
Would guess your laptop already has a sound card (may be integrated into other hardware), so could be a configuration problem. Not meaning to be funny but are you using the right sockets at the back of the laptop (the one you need will have a green colour)? Could be a problem with 'too powerful' speakers, but it's possible to connect proper hi-fi speakers to a laptop so wouldn't have thought so.
Sound card and ethernet card are two different things - one is for processing sound, the other for connecting to networks/internet.

Check with product manufacturer for compatibility with different systems.
It could be the drivers are configured differently on each system installed.
Another thing you could do is check sound card/computer hardware forums for more details.

There are two types of audio outputs, LINE level and SPEAKER level.
A line level would be the type going from a tape deck or CD player to an amplifier, it CANNOT DRIVE SPEAKERS. At best it will give you very low output that you are describing. If that is the problem you need amplified speakers.
Windows can be moved to different drives with software that makes partition images. But moving it between laptops presents the problem of incompatible hardware and drivers.
