I use wire.
A friend of mine into wireless talks abot encryption and not using the default but I don't know how it is set up. A lot of systems are set up straight out of the box and left wide open.

Le Moor,
Here are a few things you can do to help secure your Network:
Change the factory default password on your router.
Install a firewall on your laptop or pc. You can also install a firewall on your router.
Enable Encryption on the following 3 security protocols. You may not have all 3 on your router. It depends on how old it is.
WEP (Wired equivalent Privacy) supposedly this is the weakest security protocol.
WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access).
WPA2 (Wi-Fi Protected Access 2).
Enable MAC address filtering.
Turn off SSID (Service Set Identifier).
Turn off the remote management features on your router.
Disable DHCP install a static IP address.

Le Moor - read the insructions mate!!
Can you at least browse the web using it?
If so is the unit giving you your IP address?
If so are you using a windows PC?
If so check your IP settings (get a command prompt and type ipconfig or ipconfig/all)
Your default gateway is the blekin wireless device.
You should be able to get into the management/configuration page of the device - This is usually web based?
Type the default gateway address into your web browser then follow ac9311.

Change the factory default password on your router. - all units ship with the same default settings from the factory, change this so only you know the credentials to get into the unit - you can always rest it to default but you need physical access to the unit too do this.
Install a firewall on your laptop or pc. - get zonealarm free off the internet
You can also install a firewall on your router. - this is usually standard. managing zonealarm on your pc will get you acquainted with the concept - you can then configure the firewall on the router but for now leave as default.
Enable Encryption on the following 3 security protocols. You may not have all 3 on your router. It depends on how old it is. - communication between your pc and the router is sent in clear text. This means anyone sniffing the airwaves can see all your passwords. Encryption does precisely that, encrypts this communication where it needs to be decrypted for it to be read. All encryption can be broken, the stronger the encryption the harder it is to crack the decryption code.
To be honest, nobody will want to crack your code but none can browse using your internet connection if they do not know it.
WEP (Wired equivalent Privacy) supposedly this is the weakest security protocol.
WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access).
WPA2 (Wi-Fi Protected Access 2).
Enable MAC address filtering - all network cards have a unique address called the mac address - you can tell your router to only permit access for the mac addresses you tell it to.
Turn off SSID (Service Set Identifier). - this will stop your router advertising itself as an available wireless connection - somebody would have to know what your id is to connect to it. These are all the same frm the factory so as well as turning it off you should change the SSID itself.
Turn off the remote management features on your router. - this ill prevent the ability to get onto the management page for your router remotely. With default settings anyone with a wireless client can get an ip address from your router and get onto it and change all the settings, and browse the web using your internet connection.
Disable DHCP install a static IP address. - prevents the unit giving out ip addresses but you will have to configure one for your computer manually. Again if left at default, an educated person can also give himself a static IP address and still use your router so you could change the address configured on the unit but you need to follow certain rules else you won't be able to browse - this may be more trouble than its worth.
All in all you can see why most people don't bother and why those in the know take it for granted that most people don't

Also if the link to the Belkin site that Incognito gave you doesn't help you, do a search on each step that we listed and you are sure to find instruction.
In addition, if your router is still in warranty you can call tech support (there should be a phone number listed in you owners manual) and they will usually assist you.
Sorry about giving you such a high level explaination to you question. But to list each step in detail would be a small book. You can find a detailed step by step version on the net for each item we listed guaranteed.

==================================
The best you can probably do is turn on the WAP on your router...that's about it. If someone wants in on your network, they will get it. I do it all the time (for demonstrative purposes ).
Current standards of wireless encryption is a joke, so don't get your hopes up on security.

That's great Thoth. That is why I'm wired. The only reason a wireless system is secure is because nobody with the knowhow gives a damn.
