What happens immediately before the machine switches off? Do you get any kind of warning telling you the PC is about to reboot?
Your symptoms sound like the Sasser worm, but your anti-virus stuff would almost certainly have picked that up.....could try TrendMicro's HouseCall service (free online virus scan) - should get it via the TrendMicro website
Hope this helps

OK.....only other thought is about your power supply - maybe by connecting another device you are tripping a fuse? Solution might be to disconnect another device before connecting camera, or to upgrade unit - they are relatively cheap...

This sounds like the kernel is dumping. I suspiscous that you say it has started happening since you made a few hardware adjustments.
I am guessing that using either your USB modem or webcam somehow causes windows to fall over. Best thing to do would try and isolate what is causing it. Ie, don't use your webcam for a few days, then if it doesn't do it, you have your cause.
Then maybe try going to the manufacters website and see if you can get newer drivers.
Oh and personally I would switch back to ethernet for internet, it should be more reliable than USB.

@nick regarding usb over ethernet. tried ethernet and pc kept re-booting switching itself back on after i had shut it down. i contacted ntl who advised my pc was not compatible with ethernet and that i need to use usb again. thats why i use usb.
i had no problems with the webcam before. today someone asked me to start webcam on msn and it switched off. usually i can have my webcam on for hours and there would be no problem
recently i was checking my webcam settings and pc jus switched off.
are referring to pc manufacturer or webcam
@soul rebel you mean a new pc. i would love one if i had the cash. dont do do finance

Hmmm...interesting, I have just had another thought.
I don't have much experience with NTL but I am guessing that with Ethernet you are connected all the time where USB only when you need it. You might have a virus which restarts when it gets an internet connection, hence with ethernet nearly all the time.
Um....question is where to go from here. Do you have an up to date virus checker that you could run a scan with?
This is a good little tool for removing the most common worms:-
http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/
Also once you have everything working, I would make sure you have some sort of a firewall (zone alarm will do). Oh and ignore NTL about not being compatible with ethernet. Ethernet is built into the core of any computer since about 5 years ago, but leave it as USB until you get it working.

No, I meant a new power supply unit - the box you plug your power cable into at the back of your pc. £20-£30 should get you a 400 watt unit, which should be plenty. Sometimes too low a power rating can be a problem...
Just guessing though - what Nick says above makes sense - I've used that Stinger removal tool and it does work. Viruses can do funny things...

Blond moment???? I'm curious...
And no, I'm referring to the power unit inside the PC, rather than an extension lead that you plug into the mains...

Are you running free versions for your security im not saying they are no good but if you invest in paid for ones they may give better results?
The advice is not to have two firewalls running at once so switching off windows firewall may also help (apparently it decreases the security and because windows is only basic anyway that is, it only blocks outgoing ports not incoming)
Also try typing 'msconfig' in 'run' (in start) and deselect any program which you think are not necsessary for start up - do not unclick ones you are not sure about; this may help to isolate a problem nick was talking about
Lastly try running your pc in safe mode
I cannot see how a usb or ethernet hardware should give you problems, but try running a virus scan on any of the accompaning software
Bear in mind im not a computer expert unlike the learned people above (bless em), its just that ive had my share of similar problems

there should never be any reason to pay for security products.avg and zone alarm are perfectly adequate. Just make sure they are up to date.
usb and ethernet connections can cause system failures like the one you're experiencing.
it seems you have a hardware conflict.
the best thing to do is disable the ethernet card as you're not using it at the moment.
completely uninstall the webcam and remove it from 'device manager'.
you can then reinstall the webcam but make sure you've downloaded the latest drivers.
if you've had the pc for a while there will be a build up of dust.
open up the case, then use the hoover to remove dust from all the fans including the power supply.
this will stop the components from overheating which another cause of unexpected reboots.
been working in IT for 8 years so I should be able to give you some pointers.
if you need more help just let me know.

I don't know what the current status of your problem is but I have not seen anyone mention a possible memory problem yet. I am more of a hardware geek and others could advise you better than I on how to track down a virus or adware problem. But memory can either go bad in one area, permanently or intermittantly. This can cause very freaky problems.
It is a good idea to have a memory test that you can run that doesn't depend on any software on your system. This means booting from a floppy or CD. You can download the Microsoft Windows Memory Diagnostic program here:
http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp
Why they call it Windows diagnostic when it doesn't use Windows is beyond me.
If they haven't changed it from when I downloaded it months ago you shoud be able to make a bootable floppy that will run either a standard test or an extended test. Hitting the 'T' key switches modes. It automatically runs standard which took 3 minutes on my 2.7 GHz machine with on Gig of memory. The extended test took 48 minutes. I have often left memory tests running all night to try to be sure of no intermittant problems.
A corrupted file on your hard disk that only gets loaded when you use certain hardware might do what you describe. Uninstalling and reinstalling the software for the webcam could fix that. Once you make the memory test disk you should keep it handy.
Never forget: HARDWARE CANNOT BE TRUSTED.
And: ONLY SOFTWARE IS MORE SNEAKY THAN HARDWARE.

Don't feel too bad. It's 8 years of experience vs 28 years of experience.
I started with IBM in Feb 1978. I guess I should have a celebration this month.
