What speed of broadband access should be used to surf the web and send emails using multiple windows?
Viewing of downloaded videos etc and games not envisaged.
Who in the UK offers the best deals?
Thank you.

General information....
BT OPTIONS
NTL OPTIONS
Wanadoo OPTIONS
TELEWEST OPTIONS
AOL OPTIONS
Caveats...
Broadband limits..
Further concerns re:bulldog
AOL, although cheap, it is a notorious fact that that AOL systems imbeds itself into PC's operating system, this makes it very difficult to remove if you want to use another ISP provider in the future, plus because its european arm is Irish based company, once a direct debit account is started via debit card or credit card, it can only be stopped by contacting them, you bank cannot stop payment unless you effectively close that account.. This makes ending subcriptions or making complaints awkward..
Others may wish to add, confirm or refute some or all of the above...

Have used BT Broadband for five years....never a problem. I know from others that BT is by no means a trouble-free provider, so maybe I'm lucky. Got a free upgrade to 2MB last year - makes a huge difference to download times - useful for installing software packages - have downloaded a 30MB program in under three minutes. Pay a little over £20 per month, which works for me.
Unless you're into major league downloading or file transfer, can't see that you'd need more than 1-2MB - would be plenty for email and stuff and fine for surfing (on that, Mozilla's Firefox browser is well worth a go - anything but the dreaded Internet Explorer...). Some providers talk about 8MB, but I'm not sure that's what you actually get, and if you did there's no real advantage, from what I gather....Tiscali was/is cheap, but I've heard too many horror stories...
Would not touch AOL - too much stuff I don't want or need. Didn't know its software was so invasive. Apart from that, little to choose between others as far as I know. Don't know your budget, but between £10-£20 per month should get you a decent deal with plenty of capacity.

I am using homechoice....
cost around £27-£28..
1MB connection...
You also get cable channels... its not sky... but at least extra 20 channels is better than 5 channels right...
You get unlimited download time... most ppl don't realise this, but certain broadband companys do a 500mb- 2Gb cap every months which means, if you max your download, you will be liable to pay extra for that month...
Check the small print, or better yet ask them.. they usually don't inform customers about it...

I have been with Eclipse for the last 4 years. Rock solid service and it costs £23 a month. Its a 1mb line, theres no download limits and you can get a free static IP (very useful if you have a need for it)

Interesting,
In the USA I use Comcast Cable @ $44 per month and get speeds of up to 6mb. The catch is that if everyone in the neighborhood has Comcast and uses the service at once the speeds tend to suffer.
@ Kunjufu:
DEATH TO AOL! I went through similar problems with them in the USA! Embedded all in my PC! When I switched over to MSN Networks via dial-up the AOL Program I thought I unistalled kapt pooping up and giving me error messages! And the fools at AOL would bill my Charge for Items I never ordered, they would claim that I was suppose to tell them I was uninterested rather than saying send me the products.
I can go on and on about AOL all night long!!!!!!!!!!

Not to late am I?
For pure surfing.....no audio/video, in my opinion look towards a 2mb connection, simply because the speed of browsing from 512k to 2mb is very noticeable, anything higher and you cant tell unless the page has flash or something.
I using ukonline 8mb broadband /£25 per month, no limits. soon to get a upgrade to 22mb for £30, no limits., because that speed wasn't available when I signed up before christmas but is now in my area.
http://www.ukonline.net/
Shameless ukonline/self promotion coming up ----> If anybody wishes to sign up with ukonline, if they use me as a reference, using my ukonline email address, you get a month free line rental and I get a month free also.
I had 1 month free already.....I need another 11 months

At one point I was seriously considering Bulldog but so many people have dissuaded me from touching this company with a barge pole. I've yet to hear anything positive about them.

Just don't do it, they might be ok now, but if their services goes wrong, they go missing....simple.
And you have to fight to get anything, when I had 2mb it only connected @ 512k, they tried to tell me it's the contention ratio 40:1, whereby at anytime 40 people could be using the line at the same time, thats why its speed was low.
They wouldn't move on this, even though I told them I was connecting @ 520kbps and not around 2080kbps, and not to charge me for a 2mb service when I'm recieving only 512k, guess what... they still charged even though I told them were messing up well in advance and not to do this. I had to fight just to get what I ordered.
more details are below:
http://www.blackchat.co.uk/theblackforum/view_topic.php?id=17428&forum_id=31&jump_to=260158#p260158
They now offer 8mb for £20 but you have to have your phoneline switched to them for £10 so its really £30 per month.
For £30 I can get 22mb and keep my phoneline with BT not the best but no hidden suprise charges either.
I download Linux distros/OS @ 4Gb a dvd, 512k=24hrs, 2mb=6hr, 8mb=1hr45min 22mb=my wish.
For me, faster connection means less time my computer is on.
@ Everybody, there are credit card whores and broadband whores, I'm a broadband whore I have no loyalty to companies which doesn't offer good deals to existing customers.Last edited on Monday February 6th, 2006 22:01 by Jay Jay
