I've been on the cutting edge for a bit and still haven't purchased one yet.  I have a Ipod Shuffle that is supposedly USB 2.0 but I noticed that the connection speeds are not as fast as advertised.

@Kunjufu:

No Floppy drive?

A USB Flash drive is a must.  It made my whole masters thesis writing so much easier to carry and work on different machines last year.  I had so much data, graphs, and just writing that it was several megabytes of information.  My final thesis document was 6MB, which could never fit on a standard floppy disk.

Now, I am working on a book publication, and I can carry all of my data with me and work from any computer right off of the flash drive.  I honestly can't imagine being without one now.

Thanks all,

As long as it get me away from CD-RW which I have plenty of coasters ie wasted cd's and the delicacy of handling cd with horrible cases and such its looks to be a real convinience.

One last thing is it backwards compatible with older operating systems like Windows 95/98 if the computer has USB ports.

A friend of mine once called me "The most low tech high tech guy I know."  At the time I didn't have a DVD player for my TV and was using a VCR.  I still have ST:TNG tapes I recorded in the 80's.  ROFL

I just got a laptop that doesn't have a floppy drive so I will have to get one of those RAM drives.  I read or heard about some company named Rocket that makes one with a cover that doesn't detach but rotates around.  Does anybody know about that?

@defyear

I really doub it will work on windows 95.... windows 98 maybe, but then even windows 98 has USB 1... which may make it slower to read the flash drive, or sometimes you will have to find the driver for it on the internet then install it on the windows 98 machine (btw the driver will probably be on the CD with the flash drive).

@Umbra do u really still need to have a floppy drive?confused3... move with the broblktype

I have an 8" floppy drive stored away somewhere.  I'll have to design an interface to plug it into the USB port.  I've got to burn all those Z-80 programs to CD.bighairlol

I built a Heathkit H-8 when I was in Atlanta being trained a a newbie by IBM in 1978.

When I quit in '81 I went to work for a company that sold Xerox 820s which were Z-80 based.  I still have 8" floppies from then.

================

Actually, the reason it is there is because the memory on your pen drive is what's called flash memory (don't feeling like explaining why now).  Basically, while you are accessing data in flash memory, the voltage levels have to be held at a certain level to read or write from the memory.  These voltage levels are sustained by the USB port connection, given the power is provided by the standard.  When you abrumptly disconnect it without telling it to disconnect (or stop applying read & write voltage levels), then it can theoretically erase all the data on your pen drive.  This has only been a problem for either Windows 98 or ME from what I recall, but as buggy as Windows is, I always hit the button that says to "safely remove."

It doesn't matter unless you want to password-lock it.  Even then, there are plenty to choose from.  There are even those that are mp3 players, but are also USB Flash storage devices as well.

Because I had near scary problems in the past I guess I was forced to become one of those extra careful people.

Are USB flash drives totally uncorruptable? Does it make a difference if you swap regularly between platforms i.e Mac and PC?

There shouldn't be any problems, but if you are concerned then I suggest getting the top of the line USB Flash drive; either Kingston's DataTraveler Elite or Lexar's JumpDrive.  Both have Windows XP and Mac OS X compatibility where you can even encrypt the data and you can retrieve it on both platforms.  These two also have the highest read and write speeds to memory compared to their competition.  I just have a cheap 1GB flash drive that I got off of pricewatch.com one day for dirt cheap.  I couldn't be happier with my cheap one, but maybe the more expensive on is right for you...

The reason that you used to have to stop the USB device before removing it was to do with write cache. When copying lots of small files to a flash device it gets quite slow. To work around this everything you copy is buffered in cache, so sometimes when it looks like you have finished copying, data is still be written ni the background. If you stop stop the device you seem to have about a 50/50 chance of either corrupting the data that was being written or corrupting the whole stick, depending on what was still waiting in the cache.

This is true in all windows apart from XP, where somebody had the brainy idea of supplying an option and making it default to turn off write cache on Flash drives. So thats why in XP you can just yank the drive out as long as it has finished copying. However if you don't mind stopping the device everytime you can enable the write cache and get a noticable speed boost when copying lots of small files.

@athaba get yourself Sumvision MP3 player, 1 gb should cost you around £60-65.  I personally like it because you don't have to carry separate devices for data and music, you can also listen to the radio and password protect your data.  Haven't had it that long so i can't really give you a definite thumbs up but so far so good.

But if you are looking to carry only data then i can recommend Kingmax and lexar which i have had for over three and two years (actually forgot to return it when i changed job :cool:) and both work just fine.

Today I stumbled on an article on pcworld.com about running linux from flash drives.  Apparently there is a small version  called puppy linux that is small enough to load onto a 256mb drive.  You can boot up and run linux on any PC.

Other than the Ipod Shuffle I'm waiting for the prices to drop on the flash drives so that I can get something in the neighborhood of 4 gigs.
