I keep getting a message that my "virtual memory is low. Some applications may be denied."

Certain applications do seem out of whack, like the media player. It can take forever "buffering," whatever that is.

I just got upgraded from 64 to 128 RAM, so why don't I have enough memory?

I could ask the tech who put in the memory card, but that might end up costing me more money.

Now of course I should be able to bill you for this consulting.

Operating Systems have become dogs and hogs since the good olde days of the 70s and 80s.  They just don't care how much memory the applications take up anymore.  Of course people are doing way more sophisticated stuff now.

Even back in the 70s mainframes used what was called Virtual Memory.  Since RAM cost tens of thousands of dollars back then the operating systems were written to pretend that disk space was REAL MEMORY.  The application couldn't tell the difference because the operating system made the activity transparent to the app.  The app just ran slower because the disk was slower than RAM, but it made bigger apps possible.  It sounds like your page file alias VIRTUAL MEMORY is set too small.  I am running Windows 2000 and this is the sequence of clicks to get to where you can change the page file size.

Start >> Settings >> Control Panel >> System >> Advanced >> Performance Options >> Virtual Memory Change

This brings up a window with a couple of boxes for Current Size & Maximum Size of you page file (alias Virtual Memory).

It might be somewhat different on your Windows version.

I don't know how much disk space you have but with a measely 128 Megabytes of RAM you should probably have at least 256 Megabytes of page file.  I'm running a gigabyte of RAM
with a 1.5 gigabyte pagefile.  Back in 1978 IBM started selling the 3033 mainframe.  It took a maximum of 32 megabytes of RAM.  It cost THREE MILLION DOLLARS.  Haven't we come a long way baby?  A lot of people with college degrees weren't even around in 1978.  SH!T, I'm getting olde.

I had to fool around looking for this 'cause Macro$cam doesn't put things where they make sense to me.

Where do I send the bill?bighairlol

If you are running XP or win 2000 you need at least 250 to 500 mb of RAM. -- minimum. If you are running win 95, 98, or ME - 128 mb is okay. XP is a memory and resource hog.

You also may have too many programs running on startup which can slow things down. Go to Start, Run and type in MSCONFIG... that will pull up a utility. Go to Startup in that utility and look at the items checked to run when the computer starts. Uncheck programs that you do not need to run at startup. That will free up some memory.

You can also try defragmenting your hard drive with the disk defragmentor. Go to - Start, Programs, Accesories, System Tools, Disk Defragmentor.

If you get that virtual memory message too often you will need to upgrade your memory.

Before you do this you might wish to do a complete reinstall of your operating system and other programs first.  Sometimes reinstalling your software will make your computer run faster and will free up a lot of things that are hogging your memory.

Call you computer manufacturer if you need help. Most reputable computer companies will help you.

Thanks, guys.

Yes I am running XP, and it increases the page file size.

I haven't tried defragmenting yet, but yes, looks like I may have to upgrade.

Appreciate the help.

Nowadays with all the resource hogging software out there I would suggest at least  a minimum of 256mb memory. Any more than that wouldn't hurt either.

Yup I agree... I run on  1024mb ddr ram... and it still not enough.. you get some program hanging... mind you I could have 5-10 different things running at the same time....

I would say you shouldn't really go for anything less than 512mb ddr ram...

I agree with blackthought and other, you need 512mb of ram . Anything less may not give you peace of mind, try and upgrade to 512.

You guys on 1gb RAM and above, do you notice a lot of Difference? Seem like a silly question, but if for example you have broadband and you are on 4mbps and another person on 8mpbs, you can hardly notice the difference

I agree that 512MB of RAM is a minimum for a computer today (I run on 1GB).  One thing I would like to add is if you are looking at a newer machine you want to get the best bus speed on your mother board, fastest hard drive you can afford, with a good processor to hand it all.  These days, the RAM is not the bottle-neck in a computer system, but access of the hard disk and bus speeds; hence why most of the research and development now is in this area to significantly increase these, as well as improving processor performance.

I am about to put together a new computer and these are the first aspects I am looking at, as well as at least 2GB of RAM for a dual-core processor.

==================

To be honest, if you are running 512MB then you will not see any difference than 1GB in the vast majority of applications.  Of all the things I do on my computer, the most concurrent RAM I have used is about 300 MB.  Now is I had a parallel processor then that might be different.  Until the bus speeds, hard drive access times, and processor performance get faster, you will not fully utilize 1GB of RAM.  If you have a top PC now, you might be utilizing it, but again it depends on the applications you run...email, web-browsing, word processing, video games, etc. don't normally use all of that RAM.
