My guess is that for some reason Excel is not 100% installed correctly and it needs the CD to do a repair. Can you tell it to point at the downloaded installation? Or can you burn the installation to a CD?

When I say point it at the download. I mean when it comes up asking for the CD is there a box where you can specify an alternative location for the install files?

If so change the path to point to the location where you have the downloaded version of office.
