it has to be easy enough to use but more importantly, it has to have a bass option. i cannot listen to music without bass, which is why as much as i like the ipods, the sound to me is awful!

does anyone have any recommendations? or where i could have a look for one?

Have you considered a portable CD player that plays mp3 encoded CDs? An mp3 CD can hold 5 to 10 hours of music depending on the degree of compression you select. I haven't compared models but I have seen one for $50. Maybe I'm cheap but I wouldn't think about spending $300+ on an mp3 player.
