I've got my new computer built in that Lian-Li case with an Asus P5GDC-V motherboard.  I wasn't trying to build the fastest machine possible just trying to get somewhat up-to-date with technology.  The industry rags are saying all new machines should have SATA instead of PATA hard drives by the end of 2006 so I figured I should learn something about them.

I put a 2.66 GHz Pentium 4 in it because that was about the slowest, lowest priced P4.  The trouble is this thing is HOT and LOUD.  Feeling the air coming out of the power supply reminds me of putting my hand near the exhaust of a car, tho I'm sure it can't be that hot.  (I think)  To keep the inards cool the case has 3 fans, there's a fan on the CPU and 2 fans in the power supply.  This thing is almost as loud as my air conditioner.  When the 2.6 GHz machine is turned on next to my 1.3 GHz machine I can't hear the 1.3.

So I'm wondering what speeds people are running and if anyone else has problems with heat and noise?

With my pc, as well as the fans for the cpu and power supply. I've got 4 extra fans in my pc. 2 at the front of my pc blowing cool air into the pc and 2 fans situated at the back which sucks out the hot air.

I still have an Athlon XP 2500. It's fast enough for me (linux kernel compile with drivers for all of the extra stuff I have in it takes less than 10 minutes), but I eventually I want to upgrade to an AMD64. However, I have a few other things I want to buy first (like major upgrades for my home fileserver...).

It's all about what you want to do.  A PDA with 32 MB is more than what I need to carry around.

$500 for a broken screen.  A $150 PDA is more powerful than the PC I payed $2000 for back in 1981.   Damn I'm getting old.  LOL

I keep forgetting that you stay in Wisconsin where electronics are high LOL  Man I swap laptops like some people swap clothes LOL  I just keep my HDD and sometimes my memory.  I think in a while I am going to be to the point where I just install a few programs on a laptop and store all my data on my USB Drive (which is a 60G) at the moment.  LOL

I rarely ever use my desk top and she is a 2.8 that the kids play on.  I take it you do not believe in purchasing used off Ebay huh?  :)

I have bought one computer on ebay to fix an old clunker where the power supply died.  I'm looking for a Gateway E-4600 now.  The valve on a radiator screwed up and filled a room with steam and killed a computer.

4 years of hi-tech operation and killed by an antiquated steam radiator.bighairlol

It is bad enough with all the tight spaces in PCs now you will have to worry about if your hydraulic system is working?  ROFL

Can you imagine tech support telling a user to check the hoses?  ROFL  Or a call from a customer that says my computer is running hot...it has smoke coming out of the radiator.....ROFL

Mine's been fine for the last two years. As long as you make sure the hoses are on tight you shouldn't have any problems.

Also computer components are covered witha thin film of plastic. So even a couple of drips won't harm it.

I think if water cooling goes main stream, manufacturers will make the system completely sealed so there is no risk of leaks or need for servicing.

What processor, clock speed and temperature are you running?

I'm running a 2.66 GHz Pent 4 LGA 775 chip with the Intel heat sink and fan.  The temp hangs around 41 Centigrade (I hate that Celsius crap) and I've gotten it up to 46 running a benchmark.  The ASUS monitoring software doesn't let me set the alarm temp below 54 C.

AMD Athlon 1700+ (1.4Ghz) Clocked up to 2.5Ghz so thats about a 3200+ or slightly higher. Its 3 years old in Feb and it is still giving even some of my mates new machines a run for their money. It has been a very cost effective machine.

Temps are in the high 30's during idle and in the 40's under full load, but its near silent, just the gentle hum of the pump.
