Man.....I thought I was a techie until I started messing with Linux.  For some reason I can't see fonts on certain pages.  I have the Java console, Flash and other plugins but I can't figure this damned thing out.  Ayudarme Por favor!

I just made an Ubuntu CD yesterday but I haven't loaded it on a machine.

I have Red Hat and Mepis up now and messed with Slackware and Mandrake.  I have not seen the problem you describe.

What PAGES have the fonts missing.  The desktop?  I haven't done anything with Java on Linux that I am aware of.  Something I have run may have used Java without my being aware of it.

Give me more details.  And what harware are you running on?  Did the install go smoothly?

Hey, how has it been Umbra. long time no see!

I use Roadrunner as my startpage, I can't get the fonts.  I also have this issue with pages like MTV.com and a few others that use flash.  I downloaded flash for Firefox but have seen no change.

Is slackware any good?

My network connection died.  When the nitwits from Comcast came out they told me there was no signal to the building and they had to put in a report and they couldn't do anything about it.  So someone else had to come out and go up the pole.

Comcast uses independent contractors and somehow their databse didn't show there was a customer in this building so they cut me off for stealing service.

I was p!ssed and got involved with other stuff and didn't use the internet much even after service was restored.  They are giving me a month free for the error tho.

AIN'T TECHNOLOGY WONDERFUL?

I just went to MTV.COM with Firefox on Win2K

then rebooted and

went ot MTV.COM with Mozillla on Mepis Linux.

They looked the same to me Firefox seemed to be somewhat faster and scroll more smoothly.

Slackware seems to be preserving a somewhat geeky image and methodology.  Mepis is my favorite so far and it is based on Debian.  I am also emphasizing Red Hat since they seem to be the dominant business Linux in the US.

Honestly, for most people, linux on the desktop is a labor of love. There are plenty of efforts underway to get linux to the point where it is as easy as Windows to install and use. It has come a long way, however it still has a long way to go. Some distros are better suited for those who are not able to make the transition on their own. They provide pretty interfaces for adding/updating software and configuring hardware. Other distros leave most of the work up to the end-user. (Slackware is not known as a user-friendly distro, which is one reason I like using it.) Also, if you have a non-standard piece of hardware (such as a tv card) you may have to manually tweak the system, and sometimes with only a command line (i.e., if you replace your video card with another one and have to reconfigure Xwindows). I've been dealing with linux since the late 90's and I am still learning new stuff almost daily.

I just completed my 3rd install of ubuntu Linux.  It uses Gnome instead of KDE which to me is slightly annoying.  It keeps coming up in 640x480 and on this install I told it I only had 1024x768.  It has a menu item for resolution but the only choice is 640x480.

It defaulted with the keyboard repeat set very fast and when I went into a terminal I couldn't type single keystrokes.  The keyboard configurator was easy to find but once I got it fixed and did a find on the XF86Config file which contains the screen resolutions, the file was not there.  I don't know how to manually set the resolution.  I couldn't get the add wallpaper to work to load my Babylon 5 wallpapers from CD.

I liked the nongraphic install program but the multiboot didn't set up my Mepis Linux tho it did boot Windows 2000.

I did notice on the 3rd install that I got a message saying that it failed to load some fontconfig file.  It was scrolling and I didn't get the exact file name but this could have something to do with your problem Masai.  Maybe you would want to check out Mepis Linux, the CD comes with the book POINT & CLICK LINUX by Robin 'Roblimo' Miller.

Black people standardizing on Linux would mean decrypting this operating system.  Call me paranoid if you want but these palefaces make things unnecessarily complicated so they can hide info from each other.  JOB SECURITY and PSEUDOINTELLECTUAL EGO TRIPS!

Why call hand held computers PDAs?  They are all von Neumann machines so they are HVMs.  Hand Von neumann Machines.  What is a PDT?  Personal Digital Timepiece, your digital wristwatch.  It makes more sense to call a watch a timepiece than to call a computer an assistant.  PDAs don't have good enough legs to be assistants.

Guys how do browser a windows directory from a Linux Box. I am aware of SAMBA and LInneighbor , but I can't get it working. Still can't talk a file from windows, the LInux and Windows machine are on the same network.

Thanks Guys, sorry this has nothing to do with Ubuntu Linux, but I did not want to create another thread.

Is the directory on the Windows box set as SHARABLE?  Can you access it from other Windows machines?

If YES

Go into a command console on the Linux box.  If the name of the windows machine is Winbox2

type:

smbclient -L Winbox2

This should show you a list of everything that is shared on that machine.

If the directory you want is sharable and named mystuff and you are user saint type:

smbclient //winbox2/mystuff -U saint

This assumes a user named saint is defined on the target machine.  It should ask for saint's password.

If you are using KDE you can go into the Konqueror browser and type:

smb:/

in the Location field at the top and it should list the available shares and winbox2 should be there.

Umbrarchrist thanks for your help, I was able to get files from my windows machine at home, but can't do it at work as the redhat packet that I installed at work is customised , so some package needed for linNeighborhood to work may not have been installed

I have just seen your reply now, i will be trying it out on Monday, as always, I can rely on your help. Thanks for that.
