I have a half dozen computers under my direct control. With the exception of one (I got it used), all of them are built from parts. As I upgrade a piece of hardware in one of my computers, I eventually stockpile enough spare parts to build a new computer. (It isn't the top of the line, but I can almost always find a use for a computer.) I haven't bought a new pre-built computer in well over 10 years. (My mom bought me a Packard Bell 486 back when I was still in high school.) Although I haven't really been keeping up with the prices for new computers, I will agree that they are very cheap compared to what they used to cost a few years ago. As far as being "cheap enough", you have to remember that you get what you pay for. Profits for new computers are razor thin as is, and once you drop the price below a certain point, quality starts to suffer. It is already expected that you will throw out your current computer after only a couple of years of use. I don't throw stuff out until it is either unreliable or just completely dead. My home firewall is a 10 year old computer.

I wish I could have had a computer in highschool. I guess my mother couldn't afford $30,000 for a minicomputer with 64K of memory. ROFL The brain just doesn't work the way it did 38 years ago.
I have 3 running machines now and a bunch of parts I could get running but I don't have a fourth monitor. I'm gradually in the process of building another machine so I can mess with matrix raid on SATA drives.

I think 239 Pounds is around $380 if a pound is still $1.60. My problems with cheap computers are the result of cheap parts. The power supply and case are more significant to me than most people. I've been in the business of taking the junk apart and fixing it for years. Cheap cases have thin sheet metal and the edges are not rolled. Easy to get cut. I have ripped pants on sharp corners sticking out. Many cases are difficult to close once they are open, waste a lot of time. A cheap power supply can fail and damage other components.
I am building a computer with a Lian Li 60B case that is $120 and an antec power supply for $74. The case has thumb screws on the back and both side panels slide off and the entire motherboard with the daughterboards can be slid out the back. It doesn't make sense to me to skimp on the case when I will probably upgrade the motherboard 3 or 4 times in the next 6 years. The second best case I have I got out of the garbage. It used to be a 486 server and someone threw it away because the 100 Megabyte hard drive died. Now it's 533 MHz Celeron with a 40 Gig drive dual booting Win2K and Mepis Linux.

I'm typing this on a 1.3 GHz Gateway I bought used for $300. It came with a DVD burner and my only complaint is the 256 MB of RAM. The old style RAM would cost me $100+ to upgrade and I don't think it is worth it.
Used computers might be more problematic for businesses because you can't tell how much milage is on the disk drive. Was it run 24/7 or 8/5? When will it crash. I would still rather put a new hard disk in a good used computer than buy some of the cheap new crap I have seen.

That matrix raid stuff looks interesting, but I don't think that I will be playing with it any time soon. Also, I don't even want to count the number of times I have been cut by cheap computer cases. I'm debating on getting a good case for my main workstation, but I want to upgrade the board/memory/cpu first. I'm thinking about an Athlon64, (currently have an Athlon XP 2500+) but I want to check out the heat issues and air circulation first. (With an external DVD burner and the rest of my storage on my fileserver I only need enough room for the main os drive and maybe a floppy.) And you don't always need a monitor and keyboard for every box you have. I have 4 linux/freebsd boxes that are running on a shelf in my closet. I don't have a monitor, keyboard or mouse hooked up to any of them. (Never have any problems with them, even though all of the hardware is at least several years old.) You should also look around for used computer shops in your area. I got some fairly cheap PC133 RAM from one in my area.
