yep, but do consider Java as a starting point..similar in nature to C++,  much easier to learn & is so similar to C++ that you'll easily understand both languages

Definately, especially if you into games programming where speed matters but as a programmer you're responsible memory allocation, garbage collection etc.

Java manages all the horrible stuff and is a good starting point to learn about classes and methods - you can build up decent programs using a small amount of code.

How long does it take to learn something like C++.

Is it something I can do in my spare time or does it require more committment ?

Yup mos definetly... its like exercise the more you do the more you learn...

I would probably suggest doing couple of tutorials.... then try and manipulate them into something of your own... to get a better understanding of it...

Bismillaah. Salaam, All. I picked up this link on another forum, but I can tell you quite frankly, I don't know what use to put it to. So, I really haven't chosen any language to study as yet. Maybe someone can tell me why I need any of these languages:

You need the language if you want to speak a language that your computer understand. If you want to communicate with the computer, you need to know one of the languages.

Bismillaah.  Salaam, All.  Thanks, Hurricane, for the reply but are you referring to communicating with an OS, like linux, which seems to require much more cpu skills than would an OS like MS windows.  Of course windows has a command line for DOS, too, somewhat similar to what I've seen in linux.  But I don't get too involved with either OS, hence, my questioning the need for other languages.   Salaam.    OriginalBM

Learning a language is the easy part, learning to program is the hard part. To learn the language you have to learn maybe 10 commands and the syntax of how to use them.

Learning to program, you have to sort learn to think like a computer. Learn to break a problem down into logical steps and then convert it into code using probably no more than the 10 commands you learnt. Anybody who can program to a medium standard, you can give him or her another language and within a hour or two they would have mastered it.

In short the exact language doesn't matter. Personally I would learn C or VB for applications and PHP for web pages.

Also be learning the language because you want to do something with it. If you just want to learn a language for the sake of learning it, you will probably lose interest. Be designing a web page or app, which you can learn as you go....worked for me.

thabo_mbeki:
Sort of, when you go to uni, you listern to somebody telling you stuff. With programming you need to change the way you analyse problems. Its all very well listening to the teacher saying "this is how to write text", "this is how to draw a box" etc. But what happens when you need to do something different?????

Im no expert, (hell i im at basic level in every language) but i would think if you need to do something different then you have been told, you could use the internet as a resource( plenty of information and community programming forums) or use a specialised book. There are lots of resources

I know PHP (which implies HTML), Perl, Javascript (though I hardly use it), and UNIX shell scripting. I use PHP and Perl on some web sites that I manage. Most of them are dynamic sites so I rarely use plain HTML anymore, I just sprinkle HTML in with the Perl and PHP code. For miscellaneous short tasks that I need to do on various servers, I use shell scripting to write quick and dirty scripts and Perl for more advanced ones. Since we don't work on huge projects here, these languages are all that I need to do my job. I used to work with C, but I haven't had much of a need for it in a while.

What's a 'script kiddie' and what are the tools they download?

Well, the pandora's box is open now so I might as well learn lol!

Only a handful of real programmers make 90% of the software tools that are used to hack servers. The rest of the wanna-be hackers (i.e., script kiddies) just download those tools to try to feel powerful, and usually have absolutely no clue how they actually work. These tools are built specifically to expolit some software bug in various software programs that are running on servers connected to the Internet. (FYI: The word "server" is used interchangeably as "a physical machine that serves files or data" and "a piece of software running on one of those servers".) These servers include mail servers, web servers, database servers, remote access servers, etc. The problem is that under normal conditions there are never any issues. However, if you feed one of these servers a specially crafted segment of data (that can only be created with another program), then sometimes the server can't handle it properly and basically has a "brain-fart". That is when an attacker can potentially take control of that server.

Greetings dexxtreme. Long time no read.

Are you still hanging out at BlackVoices?

At various times I've used 8080 assembler, Fortran, Cobol, C, Awk, Perl, DBase III & IV, FoxBase. Never stayed with one language long enough to be what I would regard as an expert, I've mostly been a hardware geek anyway.

I'm studying PHP now. It bears a noticable resemblance to C. I think I should devote more time to software. I'm getting to old to be crawling under desks. LOL
