If people insist on taking a biased stand on obesity then any movement based on those distortions is doomed to failure. Conrad, it really is sad to see you post like this. I guess you and NAAFA are history. Which means that NAAFA is history, or soon will be, without financial support.
Okay, a few points. Why are fat people not approved of? Well, partly because most fat people do not want to be fat or like being fat. Every fat people who loses a lot of weight is happy about it. So is everyone else around them. We see this over and over on Dr Phil, Oprah, and all those weight-loss advertisements.
People hate being fat and they hate how difficult it is to do anything about it. What did NAAFA do about helping those who wanted to shed weight? They told them lies. That diets didn't work. That weight-loss surgery was way too dangerous, etc. If fat people just accepted their size and did nothing about eating habits and exercise what will the result be? Those fat accepting people will gain more fat.
Each individual has to cope with the body they live in. If bodies get too heavy it impacts on the quality of life and health. We read of some very fat women saying it is okay to be supersized. They claim they are healthy. It might be possible for some fat women to not be ill but even they have problems. We won't mention the psychological ones that living in our society results in if one is obese. The consequences and risks of excess obesity are real.
The bottom line is obesity is a problem. Morbid obesity is a huge worry and problems will be evident. Nobody has to doubt why insurance companies do not want to insure supersized people. Those companies can predict the consequences. Doctors are saying the same thing.
Okay, what I have written has been stated before. The scientific and medical communities all warn that obesity is not good for you. Fashion conscious people surely don't want to be fat. In fact, the only people who love fat women are the peculiar admirers who have a sexual preference for the large ladies. A sexual preference is hardly a foundation to support size acceptance. The vast majority of fat women are uncomfortable that some strange men find them beautiful and sexually attractive.
Size acceptance is a concept that will NEVER gain support. Especially of the people who are fat. Give me a break. They all want to lose fat and control their bodies so they never get fat again.
What does that leave us with? Well, an organization that is dedicated to helping fat people should do just that. They can stand up for fat people and tell the world about the evidence re obesity and the insidious way it takes hold of the body and is very difficult to reverse. There has to be a valid reason behind the arguments to support anti-discrimination of fat people. If those reasons are missing the public will not support the need to make seats bigger and wider and all those other essential things fat people require to make it easier to live in our society.
We have to counter the reasons why so many blame fat people for the resulting obesity. People believe that fat people are lazy and did nothing to prevent obesity. The sad fact is that most of the time this might be true. So, we have to be honest about the facts relating to fat people.
It would help if research is done on obese people so that we can know what the facts are re backgrounds, activity levels, glands, heredity, diets and so on. With this knowledge we can then be in a position to inform the public and fat people. We will be in a position to help them.
I believe we have to be both honest and right. Are all fat women BBWs? Big Beautiful Women. If the public don't buy it and if it is unlikely that they ever will, what is the point of using such descriptions? I say do away with the concepts like BBW and fat admirer. Both misrepresent the truth. All fat women are not beautiful and fat per se is not what is admired. It is the resulting shape and texture that fat gives some women that admirers get excited about.
The whole admirer emphasis is doomed to failure. Admirers can argue all you want about how attractive fat women are. You know what? Others don't buy it. Fat people will never be accepted as beautiful and win open beauty contests. The association of admirers with size acceptance is not a good marriage. Distortions are accepted that have no place in an organization dedicated to helping fat people. If the main need is to do something about obesity then admirers are wired to sabotage any such thing. The really sad thing is that one effective way to get some fat people to gain more weight is to insist they go on a strict diet!
About dieting. We have to know what is going on in fat bodies and how starving oneself leads to consequences that might aggravate obesity. There are ways to diet effectively. There are methods where activity can be gradually included in a lifestyle. However, it is clear to me that most really fat people are not and can not live active lifestyles. It is too hard for them. Or it is too embarrassing. You seldom see fat people walking along the streets doing that as an exercise. You seldom see fat people at the beach. So, where and when are these people supposed to exercise or get some activity?
I can see the deficiencies of size acceptance quite lucidly. That concept is misguided and shouldn't be the foundation of trying to help fat people.
While we are at it any successful online organization has to be universal and no reference to America should be in a title. It should be World instead of National.
When we can work out what fat people want we might be in a position to assist them. Goodness knows a need exists.
The second step is to address ways that might best help fat people. Anti-discrimination is part of it. A resource for dieting and other fat loss methods is essential. Research into obesity and related matters is important. We have to know what that research is and disseminate it so that fat people and others are informed.
Do we honestly expect, as Rainyday hopes, that the public will gradually accept fat people? We will be waiting a long time. If we look at another misunderstood group of individuals we can see that muscleheads are thought to be just that. It doesn't matter that Arnold is governor of mighty California. The public still believes that most bodybuilders look ugly and are obsessive dunces. What one of two indiduals achieve hardly changes the negative stereotypes. People cling to those beliefs because there is some need to do so. Maybe most people feel inferior when comparing themselves to muscle people. How much better do we feel if we tell ourselves those muscle people are flawed? The activity is bad and dangerous. In other words, there is no advantage to look muscular. It is even a negative because people will look down at you.
So, do people look up at obese individuals? Do successful people choose obese partners in marriage? Do TV shows and movies recruit fat people for their shows? Are fat people used in a postive way in advertisements? Do doctors approve of obesity? Do young kids want to be obese when they grow up?
The answers to these questions we all know. They are all, "NO!" That is the truth. How is anyone going to change those attitudes? I can't see it. From what I know of people it will probably never happen. Almost everyone prefers to be average or slim than obese. No one wants to be supersized except one or two weird feedees! Oh, and a few sumo wrestlers!
Maybe size acceptance is dead. Maybe size is revelant and always will be. Fat bodies are not in and I can't see that ever changing. So, any organization dedicated to helping fat people had better address concerns most fat people have.
This is long enough. I have some ideas but will leave it for another post.
