£1m toxic creams scam

A MARRIED couple who raked in up to £1million peddling toxic skin bleaches to black women are facing jail.

Greedy Yinka and Michael Oluyemi ignored a string of official warnings and even a criminal conviction to sell the banned lightening creams.

Mrs Oluyemi, 46, and her 49-year-old husband, who own cosmetics shops Yinka Bodyline and Beauty Express in Peckham, admitted 10 charges of flouting medicine safety regulations at Inner London Crown Court. The products, which were sold to undercover test purchasers for between £1.99 and £5.99, contain a chemical outlawed for use on the skin and potent prescription-only steroids.

Customers who use the creams to lighten dark skin risk permanent damage to blood vessels and infections, the court heard.

It is believed the pair made half of their £2million annual turnover selling the products to unsuspecting customers.

Now the couple could be faced with an unlimited fine, lose their business and be given up to two years behind bars.

The couple were caught on four separate occasions selling the banned goods - the first time in 2000 - and assured investigators they would not selling them any more.

However, they were caught again in 2004.

The couple, of Rye Lane, Peckham, admit four counts of selling or offering for sale prescription-only products and six counts of supplying cosmetic goods containing the banned product, hydroquinone,on July 1 and 6, 2004.

Judge Nicholas Philpot adjourned sentencing for enquiries to be made into their financial status.

The couple were released on bail until sentencing on November 17.

The pair have already agreed to pay £22,000 towards prosecution costs."

the profits begs the question what is being done about demand

If you read the article, you will see that they have been caught selling these poisons to Africans on four separate occasions.

I also use to make an effort to buy from Yinka's & I can't believe they didn't realise that once they were warned, etc, they were under constant scrutiny!  Worse still is the number of women (and men) who are going to be permanently damaged because they have used these products.  But nothing will change until they shut down the producers of this stuff.

However unspecting my back foot though, these bleachies knew exactly what they were putting on their skin, which is why they keep on going back time after time. and dont get it twisted, not everone starts the bleaching process to get rid of dark spots, they do it to get rid of their dark SKIN!!!

thank you for this MGL, when I told my mum she didn't belive me, but then I showed her the link, truely disgusted, even though the woman is actually quite a nice woman.

then again. even the asians sell these poisons as well, but they are just yet to be found

Rather than making excuses for the people selling these poisons, Villagers should note that the article clearly states:

"It is believed the pair made half of their £2million annual turnover selling the products to unsuspecting customers."

If Yinka and Michael Oluyemi are also members of the Village, perhaps they can post their version of events.

Yes they did make an obscene amount of money out of this, but who is manufacturing this stuff?  What is their profit margin? Why don't the authorities shut them down?

It was said to believe that the authorities responsible for letting through products like these gave a blind eye, because some were  their cut from part of the profit, and others did not care because it was aim solely for the black market.

Yinka and Michael Oluyemi of Yinka Bodyline and Beauty Express, situated at 82 Rye Lane, London SE15 4RY, are probably best placed to help Villagers with the answer to that one. Maybe they will tell everyone when they appear at Inner London Crown Court for sentencing on 17 November 2006.

I expect Yinka is also guilty of naivety even if in summing up the court may not state that categorically.  As for greed, I doubt she is greedier than most business people are, and, if by doggy practices, we assign the label greed, then the Asians that serve the indigenes of Peckham stinking, rotten meat along Rhy-lane, and perhaps deliberately poison them in other ways too, are greedy gluttons.

Led me shed some light on why I state Yinka might be more guilty of naivety. I came by the following knowledge by chance but these may or may not be relevant to this case: Very early on, just before the second wave of political awareness (90’s) about the wickedness of bleaching products, serval brands of bleaching creams vide for prominence on the high street. One of these was one made or franchised by a Nigerian company. The product was called Venus. So perfectly did this brand fulfil the needs of its customers, both Africans and Caribbean women; both naturally light skinned women  and dark skinned women, it outsold the other brands. It was as popular as the Nigerian Guinness used to be in comparison to Irish Guinness in urban myth. In any case, suddenly the Venus was banned; the originator of this topic outlines the reasons for this above. People concerned with this business did not believe in the findings of the research although some of the so-called offending ingredients were well known at the time. They felt that it was an underhand trick by the establishment once again to give unfair advantage to European manufacturers and at the same time destroy some burgeoning African competition.

After the banning, the product was sold underground. Women in the know would demand for that which was hidden under the counter. This made the customers of the product implicit in the trade and not victims of greedy exploitation.

Anyway, the topic above implies Yinka was caught several times selling dangerous products. For me, it is unlikely she unknowingly sold those “dangerous productsâ€?, although not impossible and the law does not consider ignorance, which is a shame because very many innocent people are convicted when in fact they are ignorant of certain facts. Anyway, if we assume she knowingly sold dangerous products, then we have to assume she sold them clandestinely. This would give credence to my thinking that she sold either Venus or some other well know but banned product under the counter to customers in the know.  If she did so and was then caught then it is likely one of her customers shopped her. This would make her naïve because she was too trusting. If on the other hand she ignorantly sold dangerous product it makes her also naïve and not some greedy exploiter.

Personally, I think that we Nigerians are much too naïve and much too trusting of people so long as they are black. She is a businesswoman and a black one at that in an area where Asians are slowly taking over. Her business stands out there, bold, successful and looking all brassy, cocking a snoop at all those who think black people can’t hack it. She should have been far more careful.

I know what you mean, Miss LegZ. To some, the repetition is like reinforcing the idea of greed, but it also reinforces the idea of naivety and stupidity - If you’re going to keep on selling stuff you’ve already gotten into trouble for selling. Anyway, I agree that its wrong to break the law. The fact that people want cocaine dose not validate the pusher, even if the comparison is a bit strong.  However, i didn’t want to overlook the other political aspects because whether we like to admit it or not very few things in a capitalist society especially where race and ethnicity plays such important roles, can be looked on in isolation.

It saddens me that we as black people still have that slave mentality that lighter shades of black skin is better tahn darker shades! That is why this couple made so much money!:(

These skin bleaching creams are what some Black women regardless of skin tone apply to their bodies on a regular basis and contain HYDROQUINONE which is a skin lightener.

You know something i caught the tail end of this story on the television and my wife was watching it and I asked her what nationality were the people involved. She told me she never caught that and I was a bit pissed or miffed. Because my instinct told me they were either Nigerian or Jamaican and I did not believe they were the latter. The sheer volume of the stuff involved said to me in a second that was not for Caribbean market. Neither would any Jamaicans coming from a Caribbean context would think on that type of scale because most Jamaicans or Caribbean people would not touch that sh*t...

I note that only recent generations eg the 90s generation of Jamicans or some back home use that sh*t giving them that panda like patchy skin. Even before reading the MGL post and I heard the area they lived or were sentenced and  I knew West Africans were involved.

Before anybody starts screaming, my instincts came from two dimensions the first of which was somebody was scape goating somebody, not saying they did not deserve to be dealt with, but it was being used for other reasons, commerically or racially. Because of all the people to prosecute it was going to be black people trust me. Because if nobody knows how the regulatory or law enforcement agencies work, I do and how they excercise discretion in who they go after.

And if you can kill three birds with one stone and get little political or other comeback, that is who you go after. So they would not go after Asians very easily, if they have Nigerians to go after. I would not even disagree with the poster who suggested Asians benefit and even involved in tipping off the authorities. Where serious money is involved them people don't ramp in putting a competitor out of business, even their own family.

In fact it would be a serious derilliction of duty and people would get fired if you have a soft target like that and don't go for it. Nigerians have a terrible reputation in the higher echoleons of many enforcement agencies.  I say that not because I believe it, in fact spend nuff time challenging it but they do. Too often they have helped white people in forming these views not that it takes much for any AFrican or CAribbean or black community.

This is what they use to call a 'stone bonker' in the police or law enforcement business. When a case like this comes along you just milk it for all its worth. I saw the end of that newsclip and trust me if was not designed to make those involved look good. About this stuff is well-known to be illegal and dangerous..The sheer amount and level of organisation showed these people were ruthless in their greed for money, it panders to racial self hatred and all the rest.

In fact if I did not know better I would have applauded as this excellent work of the agency and officials involved and given them the thumbs up. That is why I asked my wife when I heard the charges etc what was the nationality of those involved, because I knew it would not be Asians or whites or anybody else. It could only have been who it was.

Its seem skin bleaching is a world wide practice.

U.S. to limit sales of skin bleaching creams:

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is proposing a ban on over-the-counter sales of skin-lightening products, saying potential health risks mean they should not be sold without a prescription.

The creams typically contain a drug called hydroquinone, a possible carcinogen also linked to a skin-disfiguring condition, the FDA said.

While the actual risk of the drug is unknown, the agency said the products should be restricted to prescription use under medical supervision.

An estimated 65 companies in the United States sell roughly 130 different skin-bleaching creams and other products that contain hydroquinone, the FDA said.

I actually shop their a lot, as I am in Peckham weekly. I find it disappointing, and dosgraceful.

I just can't put my finger on why African women would do that to themselves. They are fine, and I mean FIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNE as they are.

I have already told many of my female friends if I catch you skin bleaching that I would cuss , then take pictures  of them and post it on youtube.

Now people are going to think that all Nigerians like me are just like her.

p.s Just ouit of interest when ACE Afro Cosmetics was caught out doing the same thing, on more than one occassion  was their a media uproar? did the bbc decide to discuss the issue on talkshows?

All these shop owners selling these products need to get dissed.

HOWEVER ANOTHER ISSUE IS HOW ARE THEY GETTING INTO THE COUNTRY? WHO CONTROLS THE DISTRIBUTION OF THEM?

Its sad because to an extent I see female being a big part in resurrecting African nations all over the world, but if this is how they are going on...........
