I've been natural for about 2yrs now, I keep my hair in extensions, and on a couple of occasions I have had a weave. The weave grows my hair better as I can keep it in longer. At the moment I get my own hair plaited to give it a break from the weave and the extensions. I have also straightened my hair a couple of times with a straightener, it works just as well as a relaxer. I got my straightener from my hairdresser for £90.
The reason why I have gone natural is because everytime I got my hair relaxed it would break. I would go for my treatment every two weeks but it never made a difference. I have weak points at the sides and back of my hair so I would be left with little bald patches. One day my hair got so bad that I had it put in weave for 3 mths to give it a break from the relaxer and to help my weak points grow back. When my hair got taken out of the weave I was shocked at how well my hair had grown over all. My hair looked healthy and thick, and there was no bald patches. So it was then that I decided that I wasn't gonna relax my hair again. I started braiding it and when there was a good amount of regrowth I got the rest of the relaxer cut out.
When I was going to the hairdressers they would use keracare products. But now I have two people that work from home who I can use to do my hair, so I don't go hairdressers anymore. They wash my hair before they plait it, and can steam it too. In honesty I haven't stopped to look at what they put in my hair, even though I should. I've had no reaction to what they have used and my hair is still growing nicely. The only thing I am guilty of is not getting my hair trimmed, which I will do the next time I put my hair in extensions.

hi ladyday, I have been natural for a year and i love it. I love my natural hair because that was what I was born with. I love it because its much more easier to style (believe it or not). I love it because there are so many things i can do with it that relaxed hair can not. I love it because there is no other person with the same hair as me . I love it because I can get two styles out of one .
I must admit, it was hard finding things to work on my hair. I had to learn how to look after it and not rely on people to do it for me. I had to relise that straight hair is different from natural hair so natural hair needs to be treated as such.
When transitioning you will notice that your hair is much drier than normal. this is because your hair is adjusting to not being permed. You might also find that where the regrowth and the permed your hair my break, so you have to be careful while transitioning. I suggest that you get alot of info while transition so you know what you are doing.
oh, I went natural b/c I couldn't be bothered to keep the perming up. The perm also started thining my hair, so that was another factor. Another thing was that I just wanted to have my natural hair back. I just love it

Hi, Ladies!
I've stopped relaxing my hair in december 2002 and made the big chop in april 2003; I was thinking about wearing my hair in their natural texture since a few time, but I didn't know how to do. Cheking the Nappturality board has been very useful for me: I've found advices and support and sooo much generosity and kindness.
There is also a european board for nappturals from Europe (Italy, Netherland, Germany, Switzerland, France): http://www.euronaps.ch/phpBB2.
The transition time has been an important period for me: I've learned to know my hair needs, and the appropriate cares; during this time, I've tried and learned to braid my hair by myself.
I thought that I would regret my long relaxed lengths after the big chop, but not at all; I just got to enjoy my hair as it is: no lye, no trick, just "wash and go"!
To dress, you got many many variety of styles from simple afro (with headbands or in free form) to braids (cornrows, twists, flat twists, bantu knots, twist out); and your hair is never hurted by these cares.
My only problem is as Facetygal, to trim my hair; I got to learn how to do it myself (since I've get napptural, I don't trust anybody concerning my hair cares!)
First, I've been afraid of my circle reactions and remarks, but most of them have been positive.
So, if you're really tempted to begin the journey, GO ON girl!
Afroetic

Decided to grow my hair out of relaxer late last year. Started September 2003 at the moment I am going the braid extenstion route for the transitioning period. Reason is because i cut my hair really short (halle berry short) so there wasnt (orignally) much to cut off and i didnt fancy being a bald headed woman.
But the braids seems to be working, all I need to do now, is find the best shampoos, conditioners and oils for my hair&scalp...oh and learn how to style my hair when the time comes.
Ladyday glad u 2 have made the decision
Gonna be a learning experience believe!

I've been natural all of my life. I've never relaxed my hair, because thankfully my mother(RIP) instilled in me the love of my own hair... After all, I was made in God's image.
There are SO many benefits of having natural hair. And contrary to what we Black folks think, our hair DOES grow in it's natural state
My hair is thick, napplicious, full and extremely healthy
One of the contributing factors to HEALTHY natural hair isn't all the countless products we see out there for our hair (even though we tend to run to the nearest chemist to get solutions out of a bottle) is diet. Yes, that good ole diet. What you eat will show up in your hair, your body, your life
Going the natural route, to me, is the way forward...
In the words of the great poet, Saul Stacy Williams:
"i stopped combing my mind,
so that my thoughts could lock . . ."
Never words truly spoken when that's placed within the context of having natural hair

Hi Ladyday
I've been natural all my life, because my mum told me i couldn't relax my hair till i was 16, by that age i had learnt to love it!
Anyway i enjoy my natural hair, because once you've gone through the process of putting it in a style (whatever you choose) you don't have to do much to it every morning to keep it looking good!
aLSO I love the fact that, no other race can do what i can do with my hair. It makes me proud, to have a crown of natural curls on top of my head!
Good luck with coming out of relaxer, alot of people i know have done it and haven't looked back since! But i know from my friends that the transition can be hard, especially in the in between stage!

@ LadyDay
I change my hair all the time from weave to twists etc etc. but underneath my hair is natural. I also do hair on the side and i help a lot of people grow out their hair.
it is easy to grow it out if you get your hair cornrowed with extensions or a weave.
If you leave it on its own to grow out then due to having permed ends, at a certain stage it will start to break.
You could cut off all the permed hair from now if you dont mind / if your hair will grow back quickly, that is another option.
My best freind grew it out a little then cut off the ends, we started doing twists at the back with cornrows in the front and soon it started growing really well so she just changes her styles all the time and she dyed the ends dark red and it looks wicked in twists.
Peace~

I've been napptural for 2yrs and 4 months and I love my hair, like someone already said, no one has hair like mine. Before I went natural, I never even thought about not relaxing. I even read For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Weaves When the Chemicals Became Too Rough, and it never crossed my mind to go natural...I must have been "sleeping".lol Anyway, I really got tired of waisting money and time on relaxers that never lasted more than two weeks...my hair was laughing at those things lol. When I saw some girl's site about her napptural hair journey, that was it for me. I transitioned for a couple of months, did the chop and wore head wraps until it grew out some. And everything I learned about natural hair I learned at nappturality.com.
Congrats on your decision LadyDay.

I havent relaxed my hair for 18 months now, tho I have to say I never went through any "regime" or "transition stage". I started off just wanting to give it a rest (first put chemicals in my hair at the age of 9), and finished off just not being arsed with going back to messing about with tongs and fortnightly treatments!!
I started with braids/single plaits in various lenghts and thicknessess for about six months, but I stopped that because 1) it was such a long ting taking them out, and 2) I noticed a lot of my hair was breaking when I did take them out. After that I did canerows. Again, lots of different ways I did those too, sometimes adding a bit of colour (red, I dont think blonde or brown suits me, down to the individual I guess). But I stopped that coz canerows dont last long on my hair, no matter how tight, coz the front of my hair in particular grows really fast; starts looking untidy after about 10-12 days.
During the summer last year I got it pressed and slung in a bit of bonding with it; that way you get the relaxed look minus the chemicals. Recently I did twists (afro-kinky), which looked good as I had over a year's worth of natural hair gowing underneath. What I liked best about twists is they dont stress my scalp like braids or canerows do, its like your hair is just growing underneath in a free state. Tho I got bored of them after a while and now back on canerow til i think of summink else to do!
Perhaps the best thing about natural hair on the modern woman is the amount of time you save not having to style it every other morning, it's all get up and go do your thing. Havent got any tips really, except when doing braids or twists (or anything for that matter) always buy human, not synthetic, hair. Two reasons: 1) 9 out of 10 times, synthetic just looks blatently manky, you can diffrentiate between yours and the fake hair a mile off (especially when its a different colour, even if only slight). 2) You can wash and care for human hair like its your own, especially useful when you have a style in for a long time.

at the moment my hair feels urgh. only because my hair is reaching that stage were i would normally be booking my next relaxer. anyway i often find myself feeling my roots and exploring its curliness. i cant wait to see a full head of curls.
@theblackestgirl.........i do like nappturality the forum is so fast paced. any tips on navigating through it. i have read many of their articles too on transistioning
i am determined anyway. my friend felt my roots and she reckons itr will be easy care regime( we will have to see) plus as i am going to the gym now i do need an easier hair routine. and natural is best

Hi LadyDay!
I've been natural for 21 years now -basically all my life apart from 2 years where I tried the relaxer then cut it all off.
I LOVE natural hair. I love its textures and the way no two natural people have the same hair -I started my loc journey 2 years and 7 months ago and never looked back!
My website:
http://dreadconnection.faithweb.com
It wasn't always easy trying to loc because I expected my hair to look 'neater' at first, but as always, I grew to love my fuzzies!
Before locing I had spent 2 years in extension braids so I was a bit out of touch with my own hair care -but in honesty, since I started the journey, my hair has never been so healthy as now!
Nappturality is THE place for me for all my info-great site!

Hi Sis....Great to see you back!
Some questions. Do you ever cut your Locs?
Mine became So heavy they were really getting in the way so I;ve had them layered. Looks so much better now and I cant believe how much lighter I felt.
Also I;ve stopped twisting them because I wanted more volume on the top. Friend of mine has really improved the look of hers by not twisting and oiling them so much. I realise now that I was tending them too much but they actually prefer being left to their own devices!

HI locsgirl!
I've never cut mine -I still want my length to get longer so I've just been letting them do their own thing.
I started freeforming and letting the roots go wild since January -yeah, its helped SO much with volume, I know what you mean -it feels great just letting them go wild and they look better now. They were starting to get thinner with the latch hooking that I was doing.
I'm sure your locs look Fab-U-lous!

Yes thanks they do look much better now. I also use a cider vinegar rinse when I wash them and I;ve noticed thats helped a lot too. 9 parts water to one part vinegar so you dont walk around smelling like a chip wrapper!
My little daughter has Locs and someone at school said she probably has head lice. Well I can honestly say that my son Never got nits and I never had them and she is the only kid at school so far to never have them. Aren;t people ignorant sometimes? I;m sure with all the oils and essential oils we coat our hair with, the head lice would die just inhaling it!

Lol locsgirl -those eo's are powerful stuff huh!
There's still so much ignorance surrounding locs and dreads these days -even when we live in this so-called 'multi cultural' setting. People still choose to see the 'image' side of it -and whats shown on the media doesn't help this image. I feel it still puts so many people off from starting the journey -the misconceptions from friends and family don't help!
Awww, thats wonderful to hear that your children have locs -one day, I'd love to say the same.
I've heard loads of people talk about the ACV rinse -I should give it a try sometime!

@alma2254..............it seems these day not many kids are encouraged to just let their hair be. with me my hair was relaxed when we moved to the states (i am in the uk now). i was about 5yrs old when my hair was relaxed. i am now 24. so i have been conditioned to liking one texture. but as i mentioned before i cant take the chemicals on my scalp no longer. my last relaxer was december. i think my only hurdles is picking up a new regime. my hairdresser keeps asking me if i want to book an appointment to to do my roots... i always say no.
from the blackhairmedia.com site i have gotten some tips for putting extensions in myself. i am glad that i have a friend who has never put in chemicals at all. so she will be helping me toomy journey back to my roots. i am also keeping a journal. so that i can encourage myself.
@all any style options that i could use wilst transisitioning?
the one thing i do not get is why do people refer to natural textured black hair as tough and hard hair. surely its due to them not knowing how to deal with the beauty of hair and comforming to others ideal of hair

Hello ladies..
I gave up the relaxer last september and about 2 months ago I cut off the straight/dead hair.. and now am sporting my own hair in twists. To be honest I don't know if I want to be a dread or have locs, but I do like how my hair looks, have got so many compliments about how it looks.. which surprised me and have encourgaed to keep wearing it and actually LOVING the look.
I'd like to know what do I do about the stray bits of hair?? they are incredibly irritating as some days I don't want to be twisting my hair soon as I get up to make it look more tidy ? I spray and moisturize it so it doesn't get too dry, most of my hair has twisted properly and looks like loccing won't take long due to texture of my hair (thick and coarse).. the front seems to the most finiky as its straighter and so the twisting is a daily thing to get some proper definition.. i don't use gel or wax in my hair, it twists well on its won.. but how do I get the top to lock? and once my hair locks is that it? how long does process take?
many thanks in adavance ladies...
