In my experience, Asians in the UK are an extremely tightly-knit community who look after their own. On the one hand, having pride in your own racial/ethnic group certainly has its advantages. For example, look at the number of Asian families who support eachother in business and send their children to private schools. Also, look at the number of Asian families that remain intact - with a mother and a father - giving the kids a stable up-bringing.

However, there are also some serious drawbacks. In my opinion the UK's Asians (especially Muslims) are not interested in integrating with mainstream society. Instead of assimilating and having respect for other groups (e.g blacks) the Asians are creating their own, homogenous communities that exclude outsiders and view blacks as the "scum" at the bottom of the hierarchical ladder.

I have had several experiences in which Asians have treated me with overt contempt. In fact, I would say that anti-black racism from Asians, is possibly more venomous than that from whites.

There is an increasing disparity between the rich and the poor across Europe. These disparities lead to resentment and suspicion between communities. I think it's fair to say that there is a general mistrust of Asians amongst large numbers of blacks who see the Asians as self-serving and extremely condescending.

Also, there is a feeling that black people from the carribean are having a particularly raw deal. In many cases, they are 3rd generation immigrants who's grandparents came over to England in the late 40's/50's and who's families have contributed to the UK for 50 years or more. Despite their contributions, blacks see that recent Asian immigrants are getting preferential treatment e.g council housing and job allocations before having earned it.  That has caused a lot of anger. In some northern cities, you will even hear black people sympathising with the BNP!! (a far-right nationalist group) claiming that there are "too many Asian immigrants" and that the government should curb immigration.

In the end, it's largely a matter of economics. If black people had more economic/political power, we'd hardly think about the Asians. But with disproportionate levels of unemployment/poverty affecting the black community and an anti-black culture amongst many Asian groups, things have become strained.

The riots therefore came as no surprise to me.

It's not all bad news though. Look at Asian youngsters and you will see many trying to copy black culture e.g speech patterns and clothes. There are many young Asians (and whites for that matter) who think that "black as cool" and something to aspire to. Perhaps a common youth culture can remove a few boundaries.

On the other hand, perhaps it just re-inforces the stereotype that in order to emulate black people, you have to act like a "gangster" from the "ghetto".

Clowns like 50 Cent only add to that negative perception of blacks, held by Asians and whites alike.
