I was I London and I kept on hearing about how africans and carribeans dont get along based on many different things such history of slavery etc...

I read on afro american websites that some people are glad they are american today seeing the state of africa " thank god my ancestors took that boat!" type of quotes

How are we similar and how are we differnent and no matter how different we are does it give the right to some of us to look down on each other?

This thread has the potential to become another great differences between Continental Africans and Diasporic peoples thread. I have seen some vile things been posted here by a lot of people who have not bothered to look at their history. Ask yourself first how different are Continental Africans now from their ancestors. I guarantee you could not find One continental African who knows the origins of their language and or the origins of their people. They will try and tell you that their people have lived for centuries in the same place but with a continent of people who have a land inhabited by ancestors for over 40,000 years nobody seems to be able to think past a couple centuries.

The fact of the matter is there is no such thing as a pure African culture, nor is there a large amount of difference between Diasporic Africans and their Continental counterparts. There is too much of people bunching Continental Africans into one group as if they are all from one place and all speak one language and we then end up with the same old them and us story. There is no them and there is no us. We are and if people bothered to look the similarities are much more astounding than the differences.

The fact of the matter is these people do not get along simply because of Ignorance. People say I am not an African simply because of ignorance. People hate Africa simply because of ignorance. As a matter of fact we call the continent Africa simply because of ignorance (however I will use the terminology I have at my disposal).

Nobody has the right to look down on anybody but we seem to like doing that as Africans a lot. And I guarantee that there will be more people posting on this thread later who will either come with a defeatist attitude and say we will never be free or they will post a whole pile of vile hate and then say 'but why can't we get unity'

This may sound like a rant but I have been looking at past threads in the black roots village as I have not been here long and I have seen some things that I pray to the most high are not in the minds of all of our brothers and sisters. I really do. I hope this thread doesn't become like that.

^^^^^I agree with you RasRuben. Topics like these are beaten to death, and are more painful than beneficial. The fact of the matter is within these forums are people will blindly accuse the "them" of self-hatred. While at the same time they hate themselves so much, they are asking stupid and unafrican questions like "why we do we hate the Jews"!!!

The point is you need to move and work with people who share your vision of pan-africanism. Not every one will subscribe to the vision. Those who are willing to see the light, are not too few either. Together we can accomplish much.

there is general ignorance, stupidity and misinformation about Afrika, and the diaspora.

people are too lazy or initerested to pick up a book or read anything their own specific culture/heritage......so there's little chance that peopel will care to find out about other people's culture /heritiage.... inclduijg other Black people....

in terms of looking down on others...that's common defense mechanism for people with low self esteem......they must find or create another group of people to look down on...so they won't feel so low themsleves.

the neo nazi groups, for example, recruit from poor white and uneducated pools of people.......lot of those people need to look down on black and brown people because they realize that their spot on the "social totem pole" is low...
