The reason that in america mixed race people are called black is because of the One Drop Rule. Its a very racist system of categorising people, baed on the concept of racial hierarchy. Basically they are saying that if you have one drop of black blood you are not "good enough" to be white. When in actually fact that is not true, you are both black and white, you take a bit of your identity and culture from both groups.

I actually prefer the system we use in africa whereby we actually recognise biracial people as being "mixed race" instead of just pigeon-holing them as blacks as they do in America.
