Ma Jamaican peeps much luv 2 y'all (check dis out everyone).....

INFO JAMAICA:  jamflag

Population :

Jamaica's original inhabitants were the Arawak, a Native American people, who called the island Xaymaca, meaning "land of wood and water".

About 76 per cent of the people of Jamaica are black African, 15 per cent are African European, 3 per cent are African East Indian or East Indian, and another 3 per cent are whites of European descent. The small group of descendants of Spaniards who mixed with Africans are called the Maroons; they have some political autonomy in Jamaica today. Other minorities include the Chinese. Kingston is the largest city, and Montego Bay is the second largest. Emigration has meant that almost as many Jamaicans live outside of Jamaica as on the island, mostly in the United Kingdom and the eastern United States.

Language :

English is the official language of Jamaica. However, Patois (Creole), a combination of English and some African languages, is spoken in rural areas and is used increasingly in urban areas. Most Jamaicans can speak or understand Patois, but it is not a written language. Jamaican speech, even in English, has a distinctive rhythmic and melodic quality.

Creole means :

The original Creoles were people born to European parents in the Caribbean Islands, Central America, or the United States Gulf States. Creoles now include the descendants of these people or people with mixed Creole and African-American heritage. The word creole also refers to a type of language that is formed when two cultures with different languages are in long-term contact with each other.

Jamaica’s African Heritage :

Most Jamaicans are descendants of Africans brought to the island as slaves to work on British sugar plantations in the 18th and early 19th centuries. Today, an amalgam of African cultures is vividly evident in the art, literature, music, and religious beliefs of the island’s citizens.

Religion :

Most Jamaicans are Christian; about 55 per cent are Anglican or other Protestant and about 5 per cent are Roman Catholic. Small groups practise forms of African, Indian, and Chinese religious ceremonies and rituals, and there are a number of popular sects, such as Pocomania and Rastafarianism. Most religious practices have taken on a uniquely Jamaican character, and there is widespread support for ecumenism (church unity). Hindu ceremonies are attended by Jamaicans of every ethnic origin and religious persuasion. Similarly, Muslim celebrations are shared with Hindus and other Jamaicans. The Jewish community dates back to the arrival of the ship hands who sailed with Columbus to escape the Spanish Inquisition. Religion plays an important role in Jamaican society, although most churchgoers are women and children.

thiz is all valid details n facts from credible research sources .

So Africans n Carribeans lets jus keep it all real..one luv & peaceout

My Nigerian sister, don't mind these useless, silly, no ambition jammos.  The fact of the matter jammos are a lazy, slave descended bunch of no hopers.  I remember back in the day in London when jammos used to look down on Africans, and especially Nigerians, because their slave masters back-a-yard told them that the African was inferior.  They used to laugh at our features and call us ugly but have you all looked at the latest bunch of ghetto kingston savages that have made the journey to london? Ugly hood rats, scowling the streets for weed, crack, and other illicit drugs.  Nigerians, on the other hand, are in a different class altogether!!! We are too cleve for jammos and we are the epitome of success.  Whilst a jammo will sell drugs on a street corner, a Nigerian, if he so chooses to enter that field, will import container loads of the stuff and be a distributer.  you see the difference in the mentality? jammos are not to be found in the corridors of higher learning because they have low self esteem that prevents them from competeing with others.  they should stick to toast pon de mike and aspiring to become baby mothers and babyfathers.  Ya nasty mango munchers!!!banana.gif

@ Love injection

You dont hear much Jamaicans complaining because they dont hear the context it is used in because it is normally a) done behind their backs or b)said in pigeon and they dont understand!!!

I am not from the Gambia so you little 'Gamby girl' saying can only apply to your friend, not me!!!

I used to say the word Somalian, i never used it in a derogatory way, then someone from Somalia said they didn't appreciate it and the word is Somali, I would respect that. To still argue the case and say "well i have been saying it all my life, and i will continue to do so, is ignorant"

So what if it is an abbreviation?? Not everyone likes it, and just because they have not come into this thread should not make a difference.

YOU ARE IGNORANT. To put your point across you feel you need to insult, if your point is so valid you would not need to. If you were that intelligent you could explain what you have to say without all that like most people do in the forums when someone might oppose something they have said.

You have your opinion and i'll have mine, i dont need to talk to you any further as your head is hard.

Peace~

Hey sis I feeling what your saying.  I get the other hand. I am full Nigerian.  I always have African people say to me, you don't look like an African you look West Indian. Which I then reply, Where do West Indian people originate from? They reply Africa. I say exactly. So you telling  me that I look like a west indian is not an insult, your just confirming I am African. That normally ends the conversation.  African Or West Indian we  are all black people from the motherland. It's sad that in 2004 will still having this debate.

So why has no Jamo person ever said anything to me???

And as i said before the majority of my friends are from Jamaica not BB but from Jamaica and they have no problem with me using the word and i have never ever!!! had a complaint.

So you are now saying i am ignorant just because you !!! said that they dont like it and so now i must stop!!!... WHich one you dey sister????

I personally think you just dont like the fact that i say the word so freely and that is what is upsetting you now you want to rant at me!!....

My dear i am not ignorant and if you never attacked me in the first place my response would not have been filled with insults towards you!...

BECAUSE I SEE NOTHING WRONG WITH MY ORIGINAL POST AND AFTER ALL IT IS MY PERSONAL CONTRIBUTION IF YOU DONT LIKE IT ....TUFF COOKIE!!!! IN LIFE YOU DONT ALWAYS GET WHAT YOU LIKE.......

My dear girl this is an internet forum and i am not hear to prove my intellect OR LEARN FROM ANYONE HEAR SO THERE IS NO NEED TO TRY AND SCHOOL ME!!!! It is all about finding a thread you like or interests you and contributing your own views.... For GODS SAKE I AM IN MY 2ND YEAR @ OXFORD UNIVERSITY SO THAT PROVES MY INTELLECT TO ME IN VOLUMES MY DEAR!!!!!!.........

One thing we can agree on is to agree to disagree....

Some black people dont mind the word N****r either, some do.

I too have PLENTY friends from Jamaica and any of them that actually know the context that a lot of Nigerians use it in, are offended and would not appreciate it.

I opposed some of the things you had said, but i never 'attacked' you. Maybe that is the problem, you take it as an attack when it is meant to be healthy debate. The jist of it is you are meant to comeback with your reasoning, not insults!!!

I am sorry but i dont judge intelligence by degrees or where you study, so you could be on your 5th year at Oxford that does not mean you are intelligent. I know too many graduates that have no common sense / observational skills / life skills / people skills and that is the stuff that is important.

Intelligent means : having mental ability, not having degrees. There are also MANY people that cannot even read yet they have more intelligence than you and i put together.

All the same, Congratulations and I hope you do well in your course because i am not trying to rubbish the idea of studying or you being at Oxford, but i judge intelligence by the way people respond to things that come their way.

Peace~

Well ChiChi, if you want to run into the streets and do the above ain't no one stopping you.  To be fair people wouldn't generally say that would they, it would either be "well you don't look west indian" or "you don't look african"

Prolific,

U missed the quotation marks around the word "Carribean".  Did you also miss the gyrating bananas and 'laughing nut' ?  Prolific I was mocking you!

Don't take things here too seriously or even literally b/c I certainly wasn't taking you seriously.

I can't believe all i'm reading on here, people really need to get over themselves! Who cares what ignorant people say to you! As long as you know who you are thats all that counts. There are ignorant people from Africa and ignorant people from the caribbean, this is not new to any of us.

I'm fully nigerian, and i have had usless Nigerians saying to me, you don't look Nigerian, you look west indian (whatever that means), then one guy had the nerve to ask me if that made me happy! I WAS LIKE WHAT! Why would that make me happy? I am proud to be Nigerian! Then i have people telling me i look Ghanian not Nigerian...i'm like who cares:P! we are all brothers and sisters.

Anyway doesn't anyone think that on Buju's first album cover, he looks like a proper yoruba man! heheheheheeh!

I am english born of African decent ,Ghana

I think Cariibeeans and Jamacians look down at us african they think were ugly and they think there better cause of there skin complextion. I dont think looks matter just because us Africans are more educated and serious with are work and dem Jamacians are more egaer to be fathers so quick and take  drugs to please the groups there with and just make cheap money easlier and call us Africans names they think there arehave everything looks ,beauty i dont havve a problem with jamacians its just they look down at us because we are Africans they see Africa as a big poor land they see Africa as being dirty and smelly and thats hurts me i look at the sucessful black africans like kofi annon and other sucessful africans and it makes me proud to see that africans work hard to get there.

today everyone is to bothered about everyone looks if your from africa you seen as an outsider to these jamos who go around like they rule this world its not about pleasing anyone england is full of african young people of african decent and african people if they dont like it then that means there not proud of where they came from africa is the mother land that were all the black people came from ghana was the slave trade country.

I think us black people we shouldnt critise peoples looks we should unite as a race

Bismillaah   Salaam, All.  I came across this article relating to the way people are bought and sold and much of it is being done due to poverty.  The missionaries are into it same as day's of old.  But the responsibilty is on those whom are given much in the world.  Charity is an obligation of all.

To the guy not feeling sorry about Africa congrats why should you do so.  It shows the people are not intelligent at all.  If they were they would not be in such a mess.  yep i do sympathise with the mainly Afro Americans as they do not have a home from home they have to deal with what they are faced with the same goes for Caribbeans with the exception of the more prosperous ones such as Bahamians and Cayman people who never seem to venture much to these shores.  Africans need to fix up themselves, they need reeducation thats all they have everything but being ignorant and unintelligent suppose is such a big incurable disease.

To Chique commonsense will rule that if you are poor and you know you cannot afford to have kids do yourself and everyone a favour don't have them noone is responsible for your actions acceptance of your own actions is one step to developing yourself having children is not a curse and should be seen as a blessing but if it brings misery then spare us from all that twaddle.

You may not like Africa, you may not support Africa but you better start getting used to something now, it'll make the future a little easier for you.  Soon the RaHoWa will come and to Africa you shall be sent - the free ride on Whites that you're getting will end soon, Whites are waking up. 14/88!

As a human being are you for or against oppression, exploitation, sujugation etc?

If you are against it then you take the time to think deeper and analyse the historical conditions that have lead to the present day state of Africa and people of African descent everywhere. Africa suffered as a result of the slave trade. There have also always been Africans who willingly will exploit and sell their brother and sister down the river. It happened throughout slavery and colonialism right up to the present day in Africa but also America and the Caribbean. You are making the mistake that alot of us (arrogant, full of self-importance, with an air of superficial superiority) individuals of African descent living in Western countries make thinking that Africa has no relevance to us and our lives.

Correct one misconception. You are African period. Wow what a subconsciously enslaved people we are if we cannot even acknowledge that basic fact. No other people deny their origin as much as us, understandably to a point but often it is those of us who consider ourselves the most educated who are the most backward.

Objectively the condition of the majority of people of African descent worldwide is linked to the continuing exploitation of Africa. Until this state of affairs is changed the majority of us will continue to experience, to varying degrees, the suffering and exploitaion we face. Some of us admittedly manage to escape it (for a while) at least in our mixed up minds if in no other way but it always comes back to greet us.

Worldwide people of African descent are under or miseducated, live in poverty, criminalised, raised in single parent (female families) experience mass empoyment, I could go on. You telling me that things are so great for us elsewhere in the world.

I recently watched the news when they were showing Haiti. Can you tell me that  the experience of the Haitians is so far removed from that of Africans, exploitation by a puppet leader whose strings are being pulled by Bush, Blair and co.

Well, I could go on but I will leave you with this food for thought for now

They're Africans they may be very mixed up but they're Africans, also don't be too quick to dismiss, one of the most mixed up Africans of his time went on to become one of the greatest Malcolm X, and for all of you who needs to sort your minds out a little or alot try reading and understanding him, he knew where he was at in relation to Africa just as did so many other Aficans born in the West including Marcus Garvey, George Padmore, CLR James to name a few

Sister Africa. So much elequence and knowledge wasted on a fool.

To illustrate Jai's foolishness she, or he claims:

"The Africans in the new world e.g USA and West Indies are much better of and enjoy a better standard of living compared with their cousins in "MOTHER" Africa. We are truly blessed i guess some good did come out of slavery.

If fact nothing more clearly indicates the lack of ambition[small mindedness and backwardness] created by the slave condtioning, which is alive and doing a fine trade in the same aforementioned countries; and amongst too many sad and pathetic people of African descent in this country, than Jai's comments.

We are truly blessed, for what......? This person obviously has never been to the Caribbean, or was probably on drugs which clouded her ability to see or think intelligently or rationally. We in the Caribbean have nothing to be proud of in material terms, and nothing to be arrogant about in terms of looking down on our people in Africa.

There are things which take place in the Caribbean which is an insult to civilised people, where the white man and any foreigner is still god, where in Jamaica and other islands white men have their sex hareems[hedonims I and 2] reducing us ,to their play things and whores, or where they can come and unleash their sexual perversions in our country,[in the guise of Tourism] and cheapening our people in the process.

So we are as much the sexual play things of the white man and his woman today as our people were hundreds of years ago. White homosexuals fly into Barbados in hundreds for what I ask myself...to have their gay get togethers in a bueatiful place, they think belongs to them.

People work for a pittence, by modern comparison and are exploited in every island by either foreigners, or the children of slave masters who today hide behind the facade of respectable business, but who have a hatred for competition. Every island will have a business class who run and monopolise everything and nine times out of ten they are the off spring of slave masters ,or who made money of our people during that period. Eg the Chastnes in St Lucia, Charles Family in Dominica, Debullies' Martinique so on and so forth. By the way. Not one dark skin between the lot of them.

Chinese, Arabs, Syrians, Indians all from their country and unable to speak a word of the local language or English are pouring into Eastern Caribbean islands grabbing, buying and stealing every piece of land available, and taking over the economy. Why?, because the ecnomy is under developed, has massive potential; and the ruling class simply cannot corner every angle, and both have an interest in ensuring the majority black people do not have control of their own country. So our people are now having to take insults from Chinese when buying basic amenieites.

The average black person owns very little in their bueatiful paradise island homes. Utlity bills in the Caribbean are a scandal. Even when they have nice things, nice house car and all the trappings of middle class living, they have very little surplus for savings investment and business. Because of slave mentality they do not cooperate and do not trust each other. But all the Chinese, Arabs, French etc come there in groups based on cooperation. So who is this poster fooling, she obviously has never been to the Caribbean, or only on a two week break in a tourist resort.

So while the Caribbean may have a bueatiful appearance[and it is a bueatiful place], you must be a fool and nothing but a fool, to say some of the things Jai has said.

Jai, I am truely disgusted by your lack of compassion or concern for your fellow African brothers and sisters.  To condemn them for what a few greedy blood thrusty tribal leaders did in the past is idiotic.  By the way your theory on who deserves pushment is contradicting itself.

One end you are stating that Africa is being punished for her part selling her people but one the other end you are saying countries like America that sold and stole far more Africans is blessed and their part in the slavery brought forth positive results.confused3confused3confused3

You are crazy

Guyz don't waste ur time n energy on diz fool,am even questioning myself about his identity,he is probably not from d carribean or from any African-American or even black community, this is 1 of those yobbish cowards like d previous once trying to stir up hate between blacks.

JAI look for yourself n see d changes going on in Africa today i guess your still sleeping in d old era,we don't need no once help man, since when did Europeans say they've been helping Africa but no one has seen the change or help they always talking about apart from them failing us ,now Africans have waked up n r starting to do it themselves for themselves.

U say blacks living abroad should hate on blacks in Africa ,why? Before Australia was founded whites where taken n imprisoned n enslaved to do labour work over there by the Queen of England but now they're all cool with eachother,Russia colonised n tortured Eastern Europeans but still they r cool with eachother now,Hitler enslaved n invaded many European countries including France n Britain but they're cool now,Europeans had one of the bloodiest wars d world have ever seen with millions of Whites left dead in d 1st n 2nd world wars but now they're cool with themselves,so why r you hating on blacks if they're trying to put d past behind them while not forgetting it but coming together in helping eachother n moving forward united?

Read this brief report below on Africa n please don't hate.

Peace has broken out in Africa,'' Yellow Times, January 14, 2004
By Paul Harris, YellowTimes.org Columnist (Canada)

(YellowTimes.org) – The mainstream news sources generally don’t pay much attention to Africa unless an American president or the Queen of England is visiting, or there is some horrendous natural disaster, or a group of rock stars gets together to raise funds for famine or war relief and to exercise more social conscience than the collective governments of the world. So, naturally, those same mainstream news sources will have failed to notice that peace has broken out in Africa. Oh, it is far from a safe place for many people and there are many miles still to tread before Africans can begin to breathe a little easier. But barring any major negative setbacks, Africa appears ready to embrace its potential and march to a peaceful drum.

The northern part of Africa has not been the scene of serious conflict for some time now, even though it is certainly not without its problems. And the southern part of Africa appears to be moving steadily toward a peaceful reconciliation with its bitter and violent past. But the central part of the continent has been unstable, violent, deadly, and unpredictable almost since the European colonial powers began to desert those countries in earnest after the Second World War. The band of countries stretching across the equator has seen some of the most horrific history over the past 50 years or so and it has largely escaped the attention of most of us in the West.

For far too long, the fate of Africa has largely rested with outside powers. To be sure, they have been the authors of their own misfortunes time and again with corrupt governments, brutal repressive régimes led by henchmen and thugs, and so on. But they have also fallen victim to the machinations and interference of Western powers that have sought only to extract Africa’s vast wealth or to use it as a convenient place to fight battles among themselves that had nothing to do with Africa. Even now, the rape of Africa’s resources continues apace with the ever-present specter of the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, and the World Trade Organization doing their best to take as much as possible with no thought for the people of Africa.

But over the past short while, measurable in months, a remarkable thing has been happening across that equatorial hot zone: peace has been rearing its timid head. It seems to be sweeping away years of turmoil and death and horror and, while there are still some isolated pockets of violence, the general mood seems to be that Africa has had enough. The curious thing about all this is that it seems to be happening because of the efforts of the Africans themselves. Long considered in the West to be a "basket case," Africa appears to have heeded a call to put down arms and work toward development of the bright future that should be possible given the enormous resource wealth of the continent and the enormous intelligence and ingenuity of its people.

The real driving force behind much of this good news comes from an unlikely source: South Africa. That country was so long a pariah in the eyes of the world because of its harsh racial policies but it is now acting as a broker for peace and progress throughout the sub-Saharan continent. As well, they are an active and leading player in the Pan-African Parliament, an organization whose purpose is, according to its published protocols, “to ensure the full participation of African peoples in the development and economic integration of the continent." South Africa’s role in this movement is critical and it has spilled over into a driving force for peace across the continent.

Raenette Taljaard, a member of the Democratic Alliance and an opposition member of South Africa’s Parliament, wrote to me some months ago about her efforts to keep her government’s feet to the fire over issues of peace and morality. While hers is certainly not the only voice for reason, South Africa’s Parliament as a whole has been made to see the wisdom of promoting continent-wide peace. In some nations, this will no doubt require some measure of reconciliation for the past, as occurred in South Africa itself. But with South Africa’s emergence as a stabilizing force, the continent is at last being driven in the right direction. Even more important, it is being driven by Africans.

Writing in the Christian Science Monitor, Andrew McLoughlin notes that Western nations are suddenly paying more attention to Africa. He says that “outside powers, including the United States, are more engaged. They may be motivated by anti-terror fears, need for oil, or guilt for inaction during Rwanda’s 1994 genocide, but they’re increasingly supporting Africa’s peaceful impulses. While this may be valid, the key still rests with Africans themselves. And that’s where the subtle arm-twisting from South Africa has proved so beneficial: this is not some group of outsiders telling Africans how to run their lives; these are fellow Africans trying to help with the empathy and understanding of having been in the same boat themselves.

While all of this progress needs to be considered with caution, there is no doubt that the mood of Africa is definitely turning toward putting a violent past behind it.

JAI you can continue to hate on Africans n blacks anywhere but we still gonna keep on moving in your face whether you like it or no.Peace n love
