very, very funny book about a young black girl scraping her way thru college .

excerpt:

On buying ramen noodles: I am sooooooo embarassed. I only have 33 cents. I (please don’t laugh) put the money on the counter and quickly attempt to dash out with my Chicken Flavored Salt Noodles. The guy calls me back! I look up instinctively, I should have run . . . Why didn’t I run???!! He tells me the noodles are 35 cents. I try to apologize sincerely. I thought the sign said 33 cents yesterday, so that’s all I brought with me. Could he wait while I ran home and get the 2 cents? I show him my student I.D. to let him know I am not a thief. He shakes his head and motions either for me to get the hell out of his store and never come back again or get the money as do come back. I don’t know. He said something like “Nyeh and swiped his hand in my direction.

I can’t translate hand motions well.

The noodles: tasty!!!

No Disrespect - Sista Souljah,

just finished reading it. Its quite an old book, but very good. At the end has a real breakdown on the dangers facing African male - female relationships.

Has anyone else read it? What did you think of it?

I bought these because of ur recommendation Ashanti-thank u. I'm reading the first one (on&off because of uni work). Good so far!!

I recommend the Left Behind series for n e one. Whether u believe in Christianity/Jesus or not. The writing is tight and the actual thought of the rapture if it were to take place the after effects for those left behind is quite scary-particularly for black ppl (i.e no laws to curb the KKK so an all out massacre race war etc -though the book doesnt mention that).

Nuvoue,

Gosh, it's been a good since I've read anything because I've been to busy with other matters. One books that I have read  was on Louis Farakkhan( I forget the title of it) but the author of that book was a guy named Vibert( not Herbert) White about his negative dealings of the man. He used to be a member of the Nation of Islam and left the movement. I've never been a fan of Farakkhan, but after reading Vibert White's book, I am convinced that the man( Farakhan ) is a fraud and that he's defrauding his own community. I'm just not trying to accept what White say about him, he answers some questions/tell things about his old boss , that will probably have some people having second thoughts about Farakkhan. It's alike a compare notes kind of thing.

Even if I was a racist, I wouldn't want to join a movement like his. I cannot support a man who insist that Slavery doesn't exist in Southern Sudan. He  and Omar Al- Bashir lied big time about it when Barbara Walters did a show about 5 years ago. What kind of example is he leading for those guys?To me, to deny the truth about the existence of slavery in Sudan is like denying the existence of slavery in the US. he has no problem exposing the truth about that. If he wasn't a Muslim(  considering that Northern Sudan is Muslim controlled), I think that he would accept ithe truth about it

Lately I've been reading more books that stimulate the intellectual. Don't get me wrong from time to time I still like to read books about living fast with all the glitz and glamour but I guess when you mature you want a little more substance. I really like reading books about other cultures. Right now I'm reading this book about an African family. I just started reading it but so far the book seems to revolve around the brother and sister, Kambili and Jaja. I find it interesting because the family is very well off and I get to get an inside look into the cultural influence that shape their lives. It's weird because when you read about other cultures you really start to get an understanding and realize that they're not so different than you. You also began to understand the cockiness and why they sometimes look down on Black Americans. The father is very strict and instills a serious work ethic in his children. Not to say Black Americans families don't have a serious work ethic, but it just seems that everyone in that country is extremely disciplined. The book is called Purple Hibiscus and the writers name is Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie the book is definitely worth checking out.

Im reading HOW MUMBO JUMBO CONQURED THE WORLD Francis Wheen

Its real funny, the what he discusses post-modernism and existentialism is too funny, so much babble I thought my head was gonna burst till I realised he was taking the piss, there is so much in this book that makes me laugh and I havent even finished it yet.  He discusses the financial markets and the silliness of it all and the workings of 'intellectuals'... He compares Thatcher to Khomeni and talks about 1979 when they both came to power and ushered in L
