Oh. Dear. God.  You are actullyy asking advice on whether or not it is cool to read/buy a book?!?!  If it is that bad for your image, and the book is a hardback why not say you hide it under your clothes to protect you from bullets! Do you seriously believe anyone on this forum is going to advice AGAINST reading/buying a book?!!?  the genre may not be to my taste, but anything that gets our youth reading is a good thing.  Why should it be something to be ashamed of?  Is this where we are at now?!?!?  Talk about an uphill struggle for black teachers when our youth ask if it is ok to buy a book.  I honestly feel like crying.  For the love of God, buy the book, borrow it, whatever. But don't ever feel it is something to be ashamed of.  Illiteracy is the bigger shame.

Im not sure if this was a comedy post or what,but i,ll say this I am always more interested in the brother that has a book in his hands,rather than a bag of crisps,or his flash phone inflicting all four-thousand and three rings tones he has on the general public.

So yes,by all means read,even if it is only the complete works of Iceburg Slim,its better than nothing.;)

Its funny you make young black people seem incompitent when we are trying to get rid of this stereotype of all black youngsters being "gangsta" i think you will actually find that alot of us do pick up a book and read it

Do you really need permission to read?  I can't believe you are asking this question.  I, for one, love to read,  I'll read anything I can get my hands on.  In the summer, I can spend hours each day lying in bed and reading.  Please, please, please, get that book and read it.  While you are at it get a library card and borrow some more books from the library, it is free of charge so you won't lose anything if you end up with a bad book.  Also pick up a book on grammer and learn how to write properly, it is very hard to understand your writing.

Good Luck,

Aryek.

Not when you look in the under 18's forum it isn't. It's not funny at all.

You get rid of the stereotype by demonstrating otherwise.

@caster-troy

If your key bredrins think you are a p***y for reading books then drive your own road bro. All it means is you be more clued up than them. Believe it or not my initial wide vocabulary came from reading Marvel comics. If your a physically fit man then you got to keep the brain fit too. Reading is good brain exercise.

All of the exceptional and successful Black men throughout the ages have been avid readers. Malcolm X definatley. You will check aspects of the Godfather that you could never get from the film.

And trust me books are always better than the films/ People dont say that for fun.

@CB

You need an AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF MALCOLM X for a start

That's very true.  When you read a book you imagine the characters/places/scenery YOUR way.  When you watch the film, it never measures up to how you imagined it yourself.  This is why people always say the book is better!!  plus films tend to edit out chunks or change/edit out characters.
