A Good thread been trying tolocate a black book shop in Manchester, even considered doing it myself if there is enough interest. I am not sure enough of us read enough for it to b e a worth will cause.

There's one in Finsbury Park near the Station on Stroud Green Road and in Walthamstow on the High Street (market) near the Shopping Centre.
There are many websites too - just search for them.

The one in Walthamstow... the woman in there is real friendly and helpful, nice shop.
There is another in Dalston (turn left and first left after the stn) opposite ridley road market and they have a massive slection and the dude in there knows his stuff
Both of them have lots of DVDs and audio tapes from Del Jones, Farakhan etc etc

Yep, the woman in there is friendly, for real. First time I went in there she was talking about her son and everything. She was very welcoming.
Its a contrast to see that shop next to the music store next door. A conscious black book shop juxtaposed with a black music shop blasting out stupid lyrics. Conscious/positive literature next to an outlet supporting a multi billion dollar industry used to pollute our minds and bring us down.
And then check to see which store is more packed than the other. It's sad sometimes to be honest. We need to support these bookshops.
I'll have to check the one in Dalston. Is that turn left and take another left as you come out of the station ? It's a pity it's not on Kingsland High Road itself so that more people would know about it and that I would have noticed it earlier. Because that Dalston can get so packed on a Saturday.

There hasn't been one in Manchester for years.
If you did start one up there where would you do it? Moss Side, City Centre, Old Trafford?
There is definately a need and once the service was provided it would be utilized.
There is a Book Shop within Workers Film Association, The Warehouse, Lucy St of Stretford Rd. (I think it comes under Old Trafford, could be Stretford!
It isn't a Black organisation but the book shop will have a good selection of books...well it should have and it did when I built it up many years ago. Plus there are films and videos to hire/view. Try it out

We haven't got one.
Would like to see one.
 But then again only if they are going to have a diverse range of books like thier counterparts, and not have silly books full of yardies and themes about the 'streets'.

i dont think there are many independent book shops left , black , white or whatever are there?
i do most of my book shoppping on the net nowadays, to be honest im looking for the best deal nowadays, i usaually buy books by black authors any way so im happy at least some of t=my money is staying in the community.

There's a shop called "Sankofa" on 132 Claremont Rd, Moss Side that sells gifts, books, cards and jewellery. The book collection isn't massive, but there are some good books there, (I'm sure she can order stuff in as well) and some good mags too.
The shopkeeper Lorna is fantastic! She's really friendly, helpful, open and welcoming. People just hang out there and chat too - its worth stopping by...

Hello everyone I am the webmaster for http://www.africanbookstore.net and I would like to address this comment:
"If you boycott African owned bookshops by buying from Europeans (and others) on the internet, how will they survive?"
It is a non stop battle against the "Big Boys" to keep are pages high in the rankings. Being a small independant book store they can not offer the deals as the others. The big boys purchase their inventory receiving HUGE discounts from the publishers which they can under sell the independant store owners. They are trying to push the little guy out.
We thank each and every one of you how have supported us in the past and those that will in the future.
