We've all done it.
We've all picked up a certain book that contained something so personal and so magical that it transformed something inside us and changed who we are, how we think and what we believe.
For me, many of those books have included Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe, makes me wanna holler by Nathan Mc Call, "The Invisible Man", "Black Boy", "The Autobiography of Malcolm X, The Motorcycle Diaries : A Latin American Journey by Ernesto Che Guevara Breaking the Chains of Psychological Slavery by Na'Im Akbar (I strongly recomend this) Most of us, in fact, would name these classics as books that changed us, shaped us and impacted our lives forever.
BUT THE QUESTION IS.
What are the new books that are being written today that are accomplishing such a feat???
SO I'M ASKING YOU. WHAT BOOKS OF TODAY (written in the last 10 years until NOW) THAT YOU BELIEVE SHOULD GO ON THIS LIST

for me it would be J.California Cooper's books In search of satisfaction it gave me a deeper understanding of how God takes time to put his hand on our lives and shows us the right way. it also showed how easy it is for us to get loss due to influences from the devil. such a deep book
The Judas Factor BY Karl Evanz spectacular read it really opened my eyes to how successful black men and black organisations in both america africa and the caribbean the americasn sees as threatening their world dominace. it also educated me on some key african fugures.

For me it's 'The Bluest Eye' by Toni Morrison. Every black woman should read this book, it's amazing.
The other book I always turn to when partner/ family/ work/ friends are pissing me off is 'Oh, the places you'll go' by Dr. Seuss. It reminds me that life is a journey, there are ups and downs....

Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe
Yes, this was such a good book...I read it when I was in Germany going through some rough stuff...and it just made me think about the world and how we view ourselves and the whole concept of power and duty...it was so good.
Also A Wrinkle in Time changed my life, it was the first book that I can actually remember reading and thinking about, which is why I still remember it today!

Wow, this is a tough one as many books have inspired me to move in a different light and way...
2 books that have to come to mind is Sacred Woman, by Queen Afua and The prophet by Khalil Gibran -both books are always there to pick up and re-read when I need another lift in my thoughts.

The Making of the English Working Class, (something!) Thompson
Soledad Brothers, Prison letters of George Jackson.
From Superman to Man, J. A. Rogers
The Wretched of Earth, Franz Fanon
These books did not so much change my life...but amongst others, have certainly informed my beliefs.

Two books I can think of that have had a major effect on my life. The first is:
Mis-Education of the Negro by Carter G. Woodson… This book changed the way I looked at things forever…
Easy Way to Stop Smoking by Allen Carr... I know a bit different but this book helped me to stop smoking, thus improving my quality of life, not to mention the smell of my clothes and hair and probably saved my life in the long run…

This is my first time reading it. I'm only on page 24. I had to put it down for a week or so (been busy) but I hope to pick it up again asap as I was really getting into it .
Really want to read Isis papers and Mis-education of the Negro, I have so many books to read and buy. Just that money is a bit tight right now.
@All, Can a library order specific books if you ask?

Yes libraries can order any book you ask for, and the more you order the more they have on their shelves.
I am a stong believer in supporting local libraries...keeping them open.
Try using library more than buying. Save your money for those special books.
Also try secondhand bookshops and I have managed to find my best books in general secondhand shops they always have a selection of books amongst which you may find a gem.
Another place to find cheap books is student notice boards(although not so much nowadays)
I'm guessing you have passed page 24 by now and will have noticed that everything Rogers writes he provides a reference for, these are a useful reading guide, to follow on from this book.

I'm definately going to make more use of my local library. I have 3 books in mind that I am going to order.
I'll look out for secondhand book shops.
"I'm guessing you have passed page 24 by now and will have noticed that everything Rogers writes he provides a reference for, these are a useful reading guide, to follow on from this book." I will look into it, thanks

The Autobiography of Malcolm X by Alex Haley
(read almost 16 years ago but such an important book I can't leave it out)
Black Feminist Thought: Knowledge, Consciousness and the Politics of Empowerment by Patricia Hill Collins
(read just over 10 years ago but another important book so I can't leave it out)
How Europe Underdeveloped Africa by Walter Rodney

The rest are more modern titles:
Teaching to Transgress: Education as a Practice of Freedom by bell hooks
Anything We Love Can Be Saved by Alice Walker
Women Who Run With The Wolves by Clarissa Pinkola Estes
In Search of Our Mother's Garden by Alice Walker
Teaching Community: A Pedagogy of Hope by bell hooks

Guys,
There was a book that I'm interested in reading. My boyfriend's mother and I was talking about Black history month in thr states. I visited the Atlanta University Center with her( Spelman College and Clark-Atlanta University). We passed by a classroom and there was a professor teaching his class about Amilcar Cabral. His mom was elated about the fact that this African-American man was teaching about him and she wanted people to know more about him. To be honest, I'm not familar with him, but his mom seem to know a lot about him. The more she taked about his history, I realize that this man ( Amilcar) should have his history incorporated into ours. Like I said, I don't know a lot about him and I think I will get a book about him because just litening to moms, I think that this man has made a significant part of Black history. It doesn't matter if he is from Guinea-Bissau, he still made a major contrinution in history. I have a strange feeling I'm going to like what I'm reading.
PS If you know about him tell me something about Amilcar Cabral. I thought that my boyfriend's mom was going to be a pain in the know what, but so far she been educating me about her country and some African( that relates to any parts of the Portuguese-French Speaking world). It's been a real joy so far. Her and her hubby will be gone pretty soon.
