I saw a lady reading this book on the train the other day. The title struck me as interesting so did a little research on the author and book via the internet and plan to buy it today.
Has anyone read it?

@I Princess Black Hail up my Lucian sister.
Yep been talking about the book for at least two years. One of my colleagues brought it to my attention. Think he knew or met Gunst in the US. Been using the book as a reference since then and even yesterday on some work.
Very very good and disturbing insight into the transition of Jamaica...
Must read.

| Yes I read it last month. It was a eye opener. Thought it was a bit bias towards Manley. But a good read.

Just finished it the other day.
Some of this was quite upsetting for real. The wasteage of life.
It was a good educational insight in to the politricks of Jamaica especially for an outsider like myself. I think thats because it was written by an outsider, she explained everything that a Jamaican writer might have expected me to just know.
Agree with you Mansamusa that she was pro Manley... From her book it seems Seaga and Bustamante were the worst things to happen to Jamaica post slavery. What say you and other Jamaicans on that view?

@DM you were specific. So I will wait for my Jamdown peeps to respond. But let me say this from a regional persepective Seaga very successfully spread his anti communist diatribe throughtout the region like wildfire.
What is so disgusting in most parts of the Caribbean and they hear the "communist" they just turn foolish. That is how effective Seaga was in harming our people. People can't even spell communist or know what it means. But they know two things. FIRST THEY DON'T WANT IT.....SHOWS YOU HOW INTELLIGENT OUR POLITICAL CULTURE IS AND WHAT HAS SHAPED IT....
1. They are anti church and therefore godless. Like our Churches in the Caribbean are any testiment to any sort of faith but that is another issue. Turns a blind eye when big men have women like hareems and involved in all kinds of gutter stuff.
2. It seriously harmed our relationship with Cuba who were seen as pariahs because of it. The ruling elite and money class simply were rolling around lauging, because all politicians would do would start screaming about the communist threat like they were a nation of child molesters.
Seaga is one of the worst leaders in Caribbean history and not even a Jamaican which really makes you shake your head that an Arab not even a national can end up the head of state.
Joke.

Absolutely. The way he is being recieved now his retiremnt is in effect is nothing short of sickening. For the ruling classes it seems he has really come home.. for all I see a bullsh*t accolades and honary speeches in his name..
The man should be strung up for crimes against the state. High treason. To see so many Jamaicans at the JLP rally /which he turned up at the other day/ going mad for the man really pisses me off to be blunt.
A damn Syrian at that.Look in the man face you can see a original devil. His eyes dont lie.

I was apprehensive at opening this book, I knew a white woman wrote it and when I saw the British version used the idiotic expression "yardie underworld" I thought "oh no!".
I thought another sensationalist load of garbage criminalising all Jamaicans (therefore in effect all black people) but on the contrary it was superb and moving.
I must agree as was said above the wastage of life was atrocious and some the murders described brought tears to my eyes.
It charted the political violence in Jamaica in 70's how the politicians created the problems by displacing poor people for their own constituents, armed the gun men that supported their party, and then in the 80's when the gun men outlived their purpose implemented the 'eradication' (read elimination by cold blooded murder) policies culminating in the Green Bay killing forever immortalised by Jacob Millers 'Green Bay Killing a murder (bo!)'.
However I am not Jamaican and wasnt living there at the time, on Amazon some Jamaicans are not impressed by the book and to be fair it is really told mostly from the Manley supporters point of view.
One Jamaican in the Amazon review site claims they've spoken to some of the people Gunst interviewed are angry she misquoted them.
However I would recommend the book to anyone.

@King Tubbs. Hmm. There are things wrong with the work as in most. Plus there is stuff in there that irks me, but it is to be expected as white tourist so to speak wrote it and then went off to the US and mader her money off it.
But I doubt anybody but a white woman could have gained access to wriite it. On the Amazon comments all standard fare. Somebody usually feels left out iin such work, however the writer decides what is relevence and where the emphasis must bel
Of course Seaga supporters are going to cry foul. They would wouldn't they? As they are not going to spend time telling you how their party with US active leadership destroyed Jamacia and reduced it.
But that is the concensus in world schloarship and no doubt they would say everybody is bias Look some of my bredrins are writing a wicked expose of the Bird regime of Antigua. One of the most corrupt and richest leaders in the Caribbean. How do you thinki these people stay in power by corrupting significant sections of the community right down to poor people. I can show you ordinary people who were invovled up their eyeballs in some of the nastiest things you can imagine. People got jobs, money in hand and all sorts eg politicians intervenening when they got caught red handed stealing the nation's money.
I can guarentee any book written even by the right hand of god himself will always be described as bias despite united world intellectual opinion. Do we think as Mansa has indicated that people or some people never benefited from Seaga and those same people or their families do not use the Internet or write book reviews. About Gungst misquoted them. All fools claim that when the final product is not what they want or they say things years earlier in chat and do not see it in writing until years later.
I have taped transcripts of people being interviewed and some of the things they confess or say is unbelievable. But I bet if I published they would say it is lies even though I could play you the tape and you can hear them clearly and there is no mistake or misunderstanding.
Simply human behaviour and tell me how would any misquote change the fundamental edifice of the book or the factst of the matter?. In fact a lot of what Gungst says you can work out or find out for yourself even through music. What is important about her book is the detail not the broad facts.
Very important book.

King Tubbs
As you say two sides to a story.
What would you recommend I read for JLP version of events then?
I notice also that as an American she underplayed the role of the American agencies in the cocaine trade. Thats a theme Ive heard time and time again in the music of the time and even thereafter.
Still as you say Fredb I did find the book important and educational.

Drunk Monkey
Sadly I dont know of any books from the JLP slant but hopefully someone reading this may post a title.
Drunk Monkey did you realise the quote in your signature is actually Hailie Selassie's quote, Bob Marley merely put them to music?
