I read it a few years ago. I haven't seen the film yet but I was gripped by the book. I love an easy read but the story was just so fascinating I'd never known what Geisha's were all about. It's a very strange custom but if you saw the documentary on TV you'll know that the tradition is slowly dwindling.

I love the fact that the girls are given a lot of respect and their Dana's (is it?) foot the bill for all of their expect tuition. Something fathers the world over should pay more attention to definitely!!

I read this book a while ago and refuse to see the film because I know they would have ruined it.

Anyway, I thought it was an excellent and gripping book!  I'll try and give you a quick review without spoiling it for you.

The main character (I forgot her name) comes from a poor village where she's happy until her father sends her away when shes quite young. He wants whats best for her and doesn't feel like he is able to do so, but she's too young to understand. From the beginning I was hooked by the book because the storytelling is very good and she's a likeable character who I wanted to find out whether her fathers choice was a good one and what would happen to her, especially as she grows older, acquires a hater and a chance meeting changes her destiny for the better.

hope that helps!

I despise this book above all others!! Firstly because it is written by some silly white man who exploited a Japanese woman by stealing her ideas. Secondly because it is a massive misrepresentation of a world that a white man can never even hope to understand. People who read this book are being suked into a fanatasy world that has no basis in the reality of Geisha or Japanese life during that period.

The very fact that people enjoy reading this tripe is a tragedy and a travesty verging on brainwashing!!

If people want to read literature based on Japanese culture then read something decent from the likes of Natsume Soseki or Kobo Abe or Murasaki Shikibu.......

The film brought my disgust to new heights..............vile vile vile film. All teh leading female roles were played by chinese for a start......GGGGGRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!

We must consider that there are members of the Asian Community that consider the book to be pure racist fantasy.

You might want to read it with that in mind and if you get a chance, check up on how real Geisha life is like.
