- Destruction of the black civilisation

- Things fall apart

- Miseducation of the negro

- How europe underdeveloped Africa

- Roots by Alex Haley

This is the list so far-------- im open to any recommendations as i need to narrow down the list to 4 books. Does anyone know of second hand bookstores in south london?

Wow.  :shock:You are going for light reading this summer. Ha ha ha with the selections of books you have listed I will recommend a few particular books.  The first King Leopolds Ghost by Adam Hochschild (incredible) It will give you an education, you will be compelled to read probably at a break neck pace, it is not dull or dogmatic by a long shot.  The Fire Next Time by James Baldwin (short read) (this man can write on levels that are just incredible...he is a writer that has not been given enough credit for his craft let alone his content).  The Shadow of the Sun by Ryszard Kapuscinski is also very excellent. and The Famished Road  and Songs of Enchantment by Ben Okri.  Just took me places I never read, The Famished Road is the book that precedes it (I read the second book first)  If you read the first two pages...it is just incredible, If you are unaffected by the first two pages then put the book back and come to it another day...you have to be "ready" to read these two books.  I enjoyed songs of enchantment more...but the opening two pages of Famished were...wow.  The Prophet by Khalil Gibran (short and potent).

Are you going away to prison?  Hahahha...I think you may want to pick up some easy, guilty pleasure reading as well, mix it in there somewhere.  Especially if your on holiday.  Otherwise you will come back ready to kill someone or bomb a building.

I'm in the middle of reading the Famished road, to be honest i've found it not that exciting. The open pages do having you going whoa.... and it makes you think about life and the spirtual world that may be around you. But I've found that the book seems to drag, although very descriptive, you do not feel like you are really get anywhere within the story. So i've put the book down, and picked up the destruction of the black civilisation, which i have been trying to read a good few times. I've finally made it past the first few chapters, and am not getting really interested in the book... and definately wanna vist Egypt and Ethiopia at my first opportunity.

Well, Gadget Girl, that is alright...you tried.  You might be better off reading the Second book first.  Because you read about powerful people, and then when you read the first book you find out how these powerful people got started.   But again, you have to be ready to read it, its that way with many books.  You may want to try King Leopolds Ghost...well written, insightful, eye opening, and you will get an education.  But it won't be boring.
