@Dimoke:shock:The German Ideology an easy intro:shock:.Sis you must clever like what. Not that I ever doubted that though.

@Ladyday extremely busy at the moment so cannot be as precise as I would like and I don't have my Marxist collection to hand. Stored away.

First thing if you don't  mind me asking what do you want the work for as that is crucial?

But if you want a feel of the school of thought ask for a Marxist Reader which is a collection of essays from the various schools of ideas on any given subject eg Marxism. I have a couple but cannot remember the names off hand. One is edited by Stuart Hall and is excellent. But if you go to Blackstones or other academic sites or simply phone Dillions University of London book shcool and one of the best and ask them. They are usually called Readers which give students a sample of key papers eg Marx's German Ideology is a classic. which will be in there along with up to date stuff. But becareful of people like Althussar and the French structuralist schools great stuff but complicated like backfoot.

If you have a very spefici interest it may be better just to go for a very specialit text as you mentioned eg Marxist view of the modern media and role in post modern state and governannce rather than plough through tons of classic and post modern stuff which may kill anyone with half a brain. I have had to do that this week and I am almost brain dead having to read dry and boring stuff most of it crap, before I come across anything I can use, but I have to and you may not. For example there are Marxist theories of criminology or masulinity so you can go to the beef of your interest than travely through 200 years of theoretical development.

If you can wait a week I will give you a couple of titles.

FBniceone.gif

Just remembered there is a series of made simple books and one on Marxism definitel y and I can see it my eyes now. Contact anyone of the above and they will give you the details because students who are terrififed of dryness tend to use that as their introductory bible.

A serious problem with Marx is that he died in 1883. What did Karl Marx say about the effect of planned obsolescence on the Gross National Product? The concept of GNP wasn't developed until the 1930's. The term planned obsolescence wasn't coined until 1940.

What did Marx say about the use of Freudian psychology in television commercials? Same problem. Freud's ideas didn't take hold until after Marx was dead and the first TV commercial wasn't broadcast until 1941.

Here is a source about Marxism:

http://etext.lib.virginia.edu/cgi-local/DHI/dhi.cgi?id=dv3-18

but his ideas need to be updated.

AGE OF UNCERTAINTY by John Kenneth Galbraith

might be more relevant. It includes a chapter on Marx.

@Ladyday. Now we are more precise. Try I think his first name is Mohammad Babbu from East Africa either Tanzania or Kenya a Professor or Economics or Politics who use to teach in University of London or Professor Ali Mazuri. I know Mazuri has written about the application of Marxims in Africa and Babbu definitely has. Try Nationalims and  New State in Afirca by Mazuri and Tidy and check the footnotes. It's an old book but a great one.

Failing that or in conjunction check Coltrane.

I just finished a 2 unit topic at UG level on Marx so I fell I am in a good position to offer you some advise. Firstly, to understand Marx, you should at least be familiar with Hegal's philosphy of history ( read some secondary text, I found P. Singer's A very short Introduction to Marx very useful for that http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0192854054/ref=pd_sxp_f/102-4455336-7839357?v=glance&s=books
concentrate esp on Hegal's Dialectices). Secondly, I would recommend that you focous on specific ideas of Marx, our course was chronological, thus we started with his conception of man under capitallist society as described in Paris Manuscrips of 1844, from that we started his Material conception of history etc. Also, it is essential that you try and read his works as well, the German Ideology and the 18th Brumier of Napolean is a good place to start. All his primary text can be found in Tucker's Marx and Engles Reader, which costs about 10 pounds. Hope that helps.

Where does the fact the US capitalist economists ignore the depreciation of 200,000,000 American cars fit into Marxist capitalist theory even though those cars were added to GDP the year they were purchased?

I just bumped this byu accident but I think I can contribute  on the thread

@Fred Black

Yeah I wasnt taught by Abdelarahaman Babu but I also knew him personally like I knew Ali  Mazrui but the diffrence t#bewteen the two is I was raised up surrounded by BABU classisc while I came to contact Mazrui later in life

If you wanna talk about Babu it means you wont leave out Nyerere and if you wanna talk about Nyerere then you cant leave out Mazrui the same goe to Professor Anyang Nyong'o then back to to HORACE CAMPBELL (how europe underdeveloped Africa) ,without forgeting Che Guevara,Kabila sr, and the whole breed of MARXIST,SOCIALISTS AND SO on back in their hay day at UNIVERSITY OF DAR-ES SALAAM, Tanzania at its height as the Meckah of radicals

AFRICAN SOCIALISM OR SOCIALIST AFRICA would be my favourite book by babu and  and believe me he believed in the idea even though Nyerere couldnt put up with him but the had principle till he returned as a dead man in Tanzania but I always  admire his intelect

@ladyday

I can help in two ways ..web and recomend books

TRY:

Learning Marxism : Always a good place to start!

http://marxists.org/archive/marx/works/1845/german-ideology/index.htm

http://carecon.org.uk/Users/paul/MARXIST.htm

BUT I think Das Kapital and his other Economic writtings are the best source. Always go to the source, not the analysis!

_____________

BOOKS

Bottomore, Tom, ed. A Dictionary of Marxist Thought, 2nd ed. (Oxford: Blackwell Publishing, 1991).
This is a scholarly dictionary, where all of the contributors hold PhDs and it contains a bountiful amount of information on different aspects of Marxist philosophy and the differences between approaches to said philosophy.

Cunningham, Frank. Understanding Marxism: A Canadian Introduction. (Toronto: Progress Books, 1978).
Cunningham is a professor of Philosophy at the University of Toronto, and Dean of one of their colleges, he wrote this book for the CPC and it is a good introduction to Marxism/Communism from a Canadian perspective.

Dodge, Peter., editor. A Documentary Study of Hendrik de Man, Socialist Critic of Marxism. (Princeton: Princeton University Press, 1979).

Draper, Hal. The Two Souls of Socialism. (Berkeley: The centre for Socialist History, 1966).
http://www.marxists.org/archive/draper/1966/twosouls/
A good introduction to a Trotskyite critique of "Stalinist" Communism and the more or less Reformist trends of Socialism.

Eagleton, Terry. Marxism and Literary Criticism. (London: Routledge Press, 1976).
Not really a discussion of Marxism, Communism, and their differences with Socialism, but in the end, it is a rather interesting read as it outlines the Marxist approach to Literary Criticism and, at least for me, helps in garnering a well-rounded approach to Marxism.

Horvat, Branko. The Political Economy of Socialism: A Marxist Social Theory. (New York: M.E. Sharpe Inc., 1982).

Lukacs, Georg. Lenin: A Study in the Unity of His Thought. (London: Verso, 1997).
Written weeks before Lenin's death, this book was essentially the first to posit the argument that there is a specific Leninist approach to Marxism. It does an admirable job of discussing Lenin's differences with the Mensheviks as well as Social Democrats. Also, there is an interesting section on the transition within Lenin's theories of his new approach to Class; namely a move away from Marx's view of the Working-Class as A Class in Itself to Lenin's A Class for Itself.

Miliband, Ralph. Marxism and Politics. (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1977).
An well rounded and non-dogmatic approach to the issue of Marxsim and his many interpretors.

Somerville, John. The Communist Trials and The American Tradition: Expert Testimony on Force and Violence. (New York: Cameron Associates Inc., 1957).
I have not read this yet myself, and it is not really a discussion of the differences between approaches, but I have been told by a few people that it is an excellent discussion of the nature of Marxist approaches to Force and Violence, and in turn the notion of Social Revolution. The author was routinely called as a non-Communist expert in Marxist Philosophy when a Communist was put on trial.

@Umberchurch

why not start a thread where we can engage deep on the subject?
