Hi there,
Not sure whether it's fiction or non-fiction you're after, so this recommendation has a bit of both! Try Caryl Phillips' Atlantic Sound -- a great read.

I gotta say that Danticat has done it again with The Dew Breaker. I'm almsot midway into the book and words can't explain how I feel about Danticat's work. Her words make you feel something deep inside your gut (as corny as that sounds) making you want more. It's the same way I felt when I read Krik? Krak! (Children of the Sea was bananas.) The only other author whose work made me feel that way was Toni Morrison's Beloved. In fact, after reading Beloved (which still haunts me for personal reasons,) I wanted to immediately get into The Dew Breaker. However I ended up reading Tastes Like Chicken by Lolita Files which was very entertaining but Morrison still had me open for something a little more intellectually stimulatiing. So much so that I never even got a chance to read How to Make Love Like A Porno Star (that and I heard that Heather Hunter is coming out with a book, so I figured I'll wait for that to drop.
Another thing that I find fascinating about Danticat's work is the way she interconnects the lives of her characters. You guys should definitely check out The Dew Breaker and if you have the time, check out Krik? Krak! It's a short read but it's extremely powerful.
