Having read that last Peter Hamilton series I posted above,  I'm trying to start a new one but it's more difficult to get into.  It's a damn big book, 1200 pages and sorta jumps straight in which I don't like since he others were paced so perfectly.

The reviews for REALITY DYSFUNCTION were positive.  In fact when I spoke to others about how I enjoyed his previous books they told me this was superior.  So far I'm not seeing it but I'll push on anyhow.

Having finished my: "Unforgiveable Blackness" the Story of Jack Johnson the first black heavy weight champion of the world, a brilliant book.

I am halfway through:

Mark Douglas's "Trading in the Zone" , already read his "The Disciplined Trader" this book is a more compact version of his first.

It's about  examining the required mind set for a successful Trader it is also very applicable in daily life. A hard read as he seems to repeat himself and is very esotric  but valuable information.

Top Books for Traders:

"Reminises of a stock operator"

"Trading in the Zone"

"The discipline Trader"

"High Probability Trading"

"Pitbull"

"The New Market Wizards"

"Candlesticks explained"

"Riding the Bull"

I'm currently reading The Hero with an African Face- Clyde W. Ford
(ISBN: 0-553-37868-6)
.

It is a fascinating journey through african culture of proverb, myth and legend and how these 'heros' relate to each individual :)

The Octavia Butler books I just read were the Seed to Harvest set (Wild Seed, Mind of my Mind, Clay's Ark and The Patternmaster).  Hard for me to imagine she wrote these in reverse order since they flow so well chronologically.  They're good stand alone stories but in sequence so much better.  The story involves two powerful beings in Africa, one female, one male and follows them and humanity over a few hundred years.  Perhaps a few thousand since Patternmaster seems well into the far distant future but is unclear.  The male being is a body changer and invaded who is bent on breeding a new race of super humans through forced selective breeding and what amounts to chattel slavery at times.  He is so old he is losing his humanity.  The female being is a few hundred years old and has born and burried many children.  She joins with him in order to try and have kids she won't have to bury (outlive) anymore.

Their relationship over the years is turbulent, abusive and violent with he being so old and so removed from his humanity he becomes wicked.  They learn to reconcile and later in what is more or less our time he achives what he thinks is his goal only to have it snatched from him by one of his "daughters".  The humans he bred become tyranical telepaths expoliting and using the rest of humanity as their serfs/slaves while linking their minds to each other.  At the same time this happens, earth is invaded by alien microbes who alter the children of people they infect into a race supposedly like those from where they originated (Proxima Centuari).  Now the telepaths and the aliens are in competition for the rest of humanity.

This series was brilliant from start to finish though it could have done with more detail between phases.  The story leaps about between books with gaps of many long years and you are left wondering about the fate of characters you got to know so well.  I've seen reviews stating the books are an exploration of gender and race and you can definately feel that in first two of the series (Wild Seed and Mind of My Mind) with the two demigods in their struggle.  The backdrop to the narritive is slavery and the new world so that brings about the breeding program and the methods more clearly to the story.  Later in the books when the telepaths are holding normal humans ("mutes") as their slaves this is clearly a story on slavery and the effects on master and slave albeit done with very little overt moralising or message making.  Masterful storytelling.

I am currently taking 3 literature classes so everything for the next few months that i'll have time to read will most likely be books for class. However, there are a few of the 20+ books that i'm really looking forward to and right now i'm getting a head start on the narrative, 'Olaudah Equiano'.

 Island Songs - Alex Wheatle

A book about two sisters, growing up in rural Jamaica and arriving in London.

What I liked about this book was that I recognised the settings, the feeling and sentiments of growing up in a Caribbean countryside.

I am reading 'Blacker the Berry' by Wallace Thurman.
This classic literiture was written during the the Harlem  Reinaissance by a very talented author who was  ahead of his times.  Its about a women who was born 'too black'and the anguish it brings her as she tries to fit within the Afircan American community. I read this book so many times and I would definately recommend it.

Currently reading two books - depending on mood:

1. "Star", Pamela Anderson

You can imagine what this book is about.  Laughable and superficial.

2. "Small Island", Andrea Levy

Only on the first few pages..................

Beloved was really hard for me to get into as well despite so many people reccomending it to me. And no it's not a good idea to read more than one book at a time it gets confusing.

At the moment I'm reading a book called SHAME by Jasvinder Sanghera about a young asian girl in England who ran away to escape an arranged marriage and was subsequently disowned by her entire family, watched her sister burn to death to escape her own marriage and then she herself fell into another abusive marriage! Very deep.

Is it me or is there a trend lately for every man, woman and their dog to come out of hiding to talk of their terrible, abusive childhood?

I read that book last year. It depressed me. It really pissed me off they way her own family espacially her grandmother cussed her for being too black.

Even when she went to college and found other black people she still found herself outcasted for many other reasons. It sure made me take a hard look at myself

This is a brilliant book. It demonstrates how it is possible to turn your life around no matter what you are going through/have been through. I'd definitely recommend it. niceone.gif

Finished reading:

Accidental Christ - The Story of Jesus (As Told by His Uncle)
by Lon Milo DuQuette

It´s an entertaining novel woven together with historically known facts for that time, place and culture,  very well researched and handed back under the banner of  historical fiction, It´s an engrossing read.

Currently reading:

Truth Vs. Falsehood: How to Tell the Difference
by David R. Hawkins

And today I´m about to pick up Transcending the Levels of Consciousness also by David R.Hawkins, I don´t know much about kinesiology or about applying it for truth or falsehood by testing muscle actions but...... everything else seems to be fairly spot on.
