Yet another piece of technology bites the dust in the march of the digital age.....Although i haven't used a cassette in years I am very sad to know that they have gone to technology heaven.....

I still rememer my time with finger hovering over the pause button recording the latest tunes of the radio..... making mix tapes for the love of my life and making themed compelations for my collection many of which i still have.....

remember the ghettoblasters and terrorising Brixton with my boombox...

I remember begging my Mum for a cassette deck for her to tell me to wait until I was 13. I did, only for Mum to buy my younger sister one too...grrrrr.

I also remember taping a track off the radio. There was an instrumental bit in the track, and my Mum came into my room and cussed me about the ironing for the whole of the instrumental bit! It was so funny, hearing her say "*****, how come you haven't done the kiss-me-arse ironing yet? You better do it now before I lick you left right and centre", and I'm trying to get the deck out of her vocal range without her knowing....

Ah, another one bites the dust

Still get brand new cassette decks in Richer Sounds, and loads of second hand ones in places like Cash Converters....fifty quid would get something more than adequate...

True the technology's primitive compared with today's, but plenty of people got nuff tunes sitting around on tape waiting for digital conversion.....they're not quite dead yet.niceone.gif

Funny enough we were at my friend's party on Saturday and we were talking about this very same subject. All these mp3 players and ipods are just soulless pieces of technology....kinda like those bendy buses compared to the good ole double deckers lol. He was playing his vinyls like the old times and leaves all the other stuff to his children.

I have an ipod and whatnot but there was nothing like swapping cassettes with your bredrins on the bus and turning around your cassette to hear side 2 (if you didn't have the auto reverse option!). I just don't enjoy technology like I used to and there's no suprise factor when these things get released....just more memory. Wack. Bring back the 80s/early 90s.

Mum's still got her's....not gone to Grenada with her, so still at home.

Music sounded so sweet in those days, not with bass limiters like today.

man I just bought one of those plus2 tape decks to convert all my tapes to mp3. Was thinking of loading all my sound tapes onto a website for downloading streaming.

Imagine, a website archiving all the uk sound system sound clashes from the 80's/90's for free downloading/listening.

The tape unit is sh!t though...nuttin but mid range...no tops, no bottom. I've got so mant tapes I'm still after a three head master tape deck. Think only Tascam do them now...just don't want to spend more than 100 quid...maybe now the prices will really come down:)

Funnily enough I bought some casette tapes a few years ago 'fi put down'   just to keep for sentimental value.
I still have my players with full functioning casettes section.

Still Got all my collections from the early 90's and good thing, my car comes with a tape deck, so I still get to catch up. Guess I will be taking more care of them.

Remember congrtulating myself for being able to upgrade from a Maxell Normal to Chrome, and eventually to metal.

Two things I will always remember the cassette for.

1. If it broke, I had my screwdriver or kitchen knife and cellotape, and you best believe I was fixing it myself.

2. I remember recording of the radio and my fingers hovering oer the record button cos those darned stupid djs never stpped talking or warned you before jumping to a commercial. LOL!!!

Oh the memories.....I did exactly the same things....LOL , did anyone ever upgrade to one of those TDK tapes that had ametal rim held together by clear plastic and were heavy...they were the closet thing to recording like reel to reel.....?

Good riddance.

Crap technology long past it's sellby date and I'm not sorry to see it go.

Dusty analogue magnetic crap which degraded with each playback, was vunerable to being chewed, had noise and hissing like a b**ch and did not pick up as wide a range as subsequent (even compressed) digital file formats.  God forbid you get a phonecall while recording or leave your tape near high voltage... urgh!  Bollocks to tape.

PH you can't compare vinyl to cassette either.  Vinyl still has it's uses.  Cassette has none.

It was only a matter of time :(. I've still got loads of tapes which I'm keeping even lately we've been playing some of them to the children. I like the blasts from the past. Luckily we have 2 sets with cassette players on them (just praying now that the children don't mash them up).

I did the recording from the radio as well. There's so many songs that I have no idea who is singing them or what they're called. Back then if it sounded good and I could get to the machine quick enough to tape it, it was going on the tape.

Still have a record player too:). I won't be throwing away my records either. I'm not too hot on the amount of modern ways to listen to music. Can't keep up. Yes I have some but doesn't mean I have to have all. Just like the phones...all these different ways to keep you occupied on like thay want us to be constantly distracted. In general as long as I can make and take a call, send and receive text messages, the phones job is done.

I don't think anything music wise should be thrown away. I've still got my old ragga and hip hop tapes from waaaay back and there's no way I'm giving those up. You have to keep these things for sentimental value since they represent an era that was far better than today.

Remember, they were the biz.. mate of mine worked in a music shop and sold me 50 for £50 back then... I used everyone but I am not sure what happened to them all.. but those metal tapes on a machine that had DBx encoding and you were getting close to reel to reel quality..

Having said that, DBx on a HiFi VHS Tape is the real deal,, equal to reel to reel easily.. just did not fit in my car..

You said in Prince....Man, I have all my old vinyl (remember vinyl) going back to the day (I won't say how far back...lol) and I stipulated that when I die extra coffins have to be burried with my music in them.  There some of that stuff you can't get for love or money on any other medium.

Respect

I converted all my old tapes over a long time ago.  I prefer listening to music to hissing and cracking.  All those old ragga tape, jungle radio and rave tapes, classic hiphop freestyles on live radio... I converted them all over to digital.  All my vinyl too.  My old 7s and 12s and 10" dubs... all my rare white labels and one off riddims.  All on digital now.

Added reason is security.  If your house gets burned down or burgled... that's it for every music memory you ever had.  Mine is in HD in two different locations as well as on portable player constantly on my person.  Short of a nuclear blast or EMP attack... I'm jiggy!

If you're sentimental about the music itself then convert quickly before it degrades to a point no program will save it.  If you're just sentimental about the ugly physical cassette itself... there's no help for you

 Where did you find time to do all that?? That must have taken ages. I'm scratching my head at the thought. Will you be offering a vinyl and tape to electronic conversion service any time soon?!

I've already done what you've done so I'm pretty much covered on that front.

Nostalgia makes you utilise 'inferior' technology from time to time.
