It all depends on what the wider community (family excluded) feel about him.  There are many millions of heroes with deeds unsung... it's why nations have a "tomb of the unknown soldier" I suppose...  It's how loudly your name is sung and remembered....

In politics or activism it can happen in two ways, either the man's deeds or words are so effective or inspirational that he affects change so that the PEOPLE declare him to be great...  Or he can amass power through other means and a gather a voice to convince people that he is great by sheer charisma.  An effector or a hoaxer... either way if he is good enough he will be remembered as a great.

If in showbiz/sports then it's a combination of lastability of the deeds, impact made on his people, how he is remembered by not only his peers but the younger generation as they will continue his memories.  Fair enough People who lived during Muhammad Ali's reign though he was great but he is great because people who were not yet alive to see him fight believe he was great too.

To some extent, to be truly great you should transcend your field... People may have thought Ali was the greatest boxer but Sugar Ray Leonard and Robinson or a few others could have made simmilar claims.  Ali was bigger than boxing and his outside activities and voice made him a great man.  Carl Lewis or Maurice Green may be great sprinters but did they make the impact that Jesse Owens did in Nazi Germany and lay the smackdown on the Aryans in their own nation?

BreadFruit: Just to add to Bluehoney's list I would put these as the main criteria for GREATNESS:
  1. Respect of peers,
  2. Transparent principles.
  3. The ability to communicate across cultures and in all contexts...
  4. Focused determination
  5. Self motivated.
  6. has the ability to inspire/motivate by deeds and word..

I would however disagree with Bluehoney and the 'self control' bit.. because there are a number of leaders whom we revere who clearly did not have 'self control' MLK springs to mind as one obvious example.. Muhammed Ali another..

LMAO.  Wasn't MLK having affairs with white women?  Not good for the image of a black activist during his time lol.

I agree.  Which proves that the more you know about someone the more you come to the realization that they are just human...no matter how "superhuman" they may appear.  The image portrayed and the actual person often clash when too much is expected from someone especially.

yep...and most of the time...one mess up has nothing to do with a person's over all character....no excuses ...but that is how it is...

hehhehehhe! you beat me to it!! but I was going to write "what seperates a great man from a good man is 2 inches!"

actually, IMHO, believe that what seperates a good man from a great man is in the issue of vision....

.....both may have vision, but it is the great man who believes that his vision is true and good for all men.

Sooofresh...Unfortunately it is and was true...the FBI recorded MLK frolicking with other women, I didn't believe this at first but this was later conformed fropm the mouths of his own people on the American TV programme 'Eye on the prize' which chronicles the Civil rights era of the Sixties..
