I was chatting to my Supervisor at work and she was telling how her oldest son( who's gonna be 10) wants a mobile phone for his birthday this week. I remarked that he was too young for one. She thenproceeded to say that he alreadyhad a TV, DVD player, Playstation Two and MP3 Player.

I was flabbergasted! A 10 year old with all that stuff, hate to sound like an old fogey but he should be playing sports and reading books

Anyways my question to the blacknet parents is when, if ever do you let your kids have tv in their room, dvd players and computer games.

Any replies will be a ppreciated

p.s. This post is not exclusive to parents, anyone with a view feel free to air them

I think to have all of those things is ok; why can't they have those things and go out and play sports and read books? Its a matter of organisation.

Fair point@ athaba, but at 9 years old(10 this week).

I think its extreme, wheres the incentive to read books and play sports when you have a ps2, DVD Player, MP3 and TV in your room

@ CashMoney

I could tell you were an old soul that's probably why we connect so well, LOL! I think 9 is a little young for a phone.

I just had this talk with my mom over something similar that came up with a neighbor's kid and a few relatives.

My child was going on about what the other child had and what not....and I said baby girl (in my nice-claire huxtable voice) the day you get those things is the day you start working, cause mama won't be giving it to ya, do you hear me?

Of course she understood, after she saw I wasn't gonna change my position. See, although most of these things weren't around or invented when I was little and I survived, so will she.

A computer (as soon as I get one) in the room is fine because of the educational software but anything else like a t.v., phones, video games, etc...She can forget about it, LOL!

I believe, moderation, age appropriateness as well as whether or not said product contributes to childhood obesity or brain rot have to be taken into consideration before consumption.
Besides there is nothing wrong with playing outside, like we did, and using your imagination, like we had to because there was not a lot of money at our parents disposal for them to splurge on expensive toys.

Good topic Cash.

Hi. You still melting them frozen sausages? banana.gif

Okay serious now. My son is 19 and he has Everything, but that;s cos he buys it all himself now. When he was young he had no TV in bedroom, but did have every new games console that came on the market. His Dad encouraged that so the two of them played together a lot. But they also did lots of outdoor stuff too.

Now I got a five year old and I see how much worse things have got for children in our Techno society. I dont drive so I walk my daughter to school and back daily. If we take one of her friends home for tea after school, these kids have No idea how to walk properly or cross roads. I have to watch them like a hawk. This is due to being driven everywhere by their parents.

I think its ridiculous the stuff all these kids have now. A friend of mine has a thirteen year old daughter who threw a mega-tantrum cos she couldn;t have the new picture phone for Xmas. Her poor Mum just couldn;t afford one, but would have bought it for her if she could. On one level I think kids are safer owning a mobile, but on the other hand owning and showing off the phone makes them constant victims of kiddie crime.

In my family we do have satellite TV. I gave in to my son two years ago but I think most of it is rubbish. I have a TV and DVD player in my bedroom and my daughter is allowed to watch a film in bed on a Friday or Saturday night...not a school night.

To be honest I know that my children have always been happiest playing games with me or others, or having a good time outdoors at the beach or park. Its sad that most people dont feel confident about their kids playing outdoors alone any more. Children are becoming increasingly overweight and lethargic. All this expensive equipment does not fulfill them for very long. They need things that feed their mind and imagination. A good game of Snap interests my daughter for much longer than a Gameboy would. My best friend bought her five year old son a Gameboy Advance for Xmas, and he;s played with it once. He is desperate to get to the park and kick a ball!

I think parents have to do much less work to entertain their kids if they indulge them with computers, consoles DVD;s etc. Its ok once in a while, and its fun to sit and watch a film together, but they need physical exercise and fresh air too.

My Mother taught me a lot about what children need. I watch her with my daughter and I;m fascinated. Last Sunday they played all afternoon with a big bag of scarves and some old hats. When my son was younger my Dad taught him cribbage and dominoes. He;s done this with all five grandchildren. None of them watch TV at my parents house out of choice.

I think all things in moderation is good. I used to be a Technphobe but I realised I needed to have and use a computer to keep up with what my daughter is doing at school. She goes on childrens sites on the Internet, but no more than an hour and then I find her something else to do.

I;ve also noticed how much her imagination is stimulated by constantly using it. When we walk to school we make up stories, each taking it in turns to add more to it. It amazes me some of the ideas she has now. I think a lot of people would notice how less dissatisfied their children would be with Everything if they used all gadgets less and their imagination more.

Like I said its a matter of organisation. I should think that at just turn 10, the parents should still have some degree of control, therefore I think it should be still possible for them to arrange times when their child plays sports and a time for when he/she reads or better, (for the child at least!), to be read to! And just in case anyone laughs at the idea of a child of ten being read to, I know of some adults who still like to be read to - and they are avid readers themselves!!!
